    well, that would depend if youre a diehard pc fan (or dont play anything but rts/fps) or just someone who wants the best fun per dollar spent. personally i hate rts and I'm over most fps (how many times can you play the same storyless "shoot the bad guy, yuo teh win" type of game without getting tired of it). console gaming saves me cash AND cuts the last need for windows on my pc.

    im not sure exactly what genre's youre trying to get at, but ive seen live techno, trance, breaks and psy-trance, and its all been fucking fantastic. no, i dont mean some knob playing records, i mean the original artists playing all their stuff straight off the samplers. please enlighten me what electronic genre is so forigen it cannot be played live

    i take it you dont have to fix many friends PCs? there was a long period (before i considered firefox "ready" for the average user, and hence wasnt pushing friends to use it) where i could not visit someone without having to uninstall a crapload of adware/ie-toolbar/malware shit for them, shit they never wanted in the first place. perhaps you dont consider that a serious exploit; but personally, shit being installed without user intervention is a huge flaw in my opinion

    so in closing, for torture to even possibly (still not definitely, extremists willing to die for their cause aren't going to crack as easily as a normal soldier with a wife and kids who'd actually like to return home alive) work the victim must actually know what you're trying to get out of them, and if you know that they know, they why dont you already know whatever you're trying to get out of them?

    This is exactly what I meant by "nearly flat"
    yeah, 4 levels is definately near flat. Apple should definately come up with some retarded way to manage your music so theres no less than 100 levels of hierarchy cause that would obviously be simpler to navigate

    It would sure be nice to have a breakdown by first letter,
    smart playlist -> artist -> begins with -> a
    now repeat for b-z and you have your wish

    Apple would never do that because it doesn't fit their aesthetic
    apple would never do it cause they have a scroll wheel, purpose of which is to scroll through massive lists quickly. your idea is just adding more work to finding what youre looking for

    No iTunes for me since I'm on Linux.
    now things are getting much clearer. without itunes, an ipod would be just like every other bog-standard mp3 player around. if you're not planning on using it with itunes, then i'd strongly recommend against an ipod. you're paying big dollars for features you can never use.

    Aside: I installed MythTV the other day. The music player doesn't use any ID3 information, but it manages to be very functional with limited input devices (e.g. remote control) and not using much more display space than the iPod. It does this by having more levels of hierarchy!
    alright then, enlighten me as to what hierarchy they use that has your opinion of the ipod's so low

  18. Re:scroll wheel...brilliant? Sorry, it's a pain. on Can Open Source Outdo the IPod? · · Score: 1

    What the iPod's UI really, seriously lacks is the proper HIERARCHY. I mean, it's nearly flat, which forces you to scroll through sorted lists of sometimes thousands of items when you can only see ten or so on a single screen.

    if its flat then you're doing it wrong. im able to select songs by:
    1. genre->artist->album->song
    2. artist->album->song
    3. album->song
    4. song (i guess this is the one you're refering to)
    5. playlists
    6. shuffle

    perfectly good selection of hierarchies if you ask me

    Menu bar at top of screen!
    what the fuck are you talking about? consistant UI is FUNCTION

I've (previously 10.4.2... havent checked on x.3 yet) noticed certian pdfs fail to render properly when not viewed at 100%, but apart from that no problems. the pdf's are all powerpoint slides turned to pdf (i assume my lecturers used an adobe pdf printer or something... cant imagine them doing anything more complex) and where the slides should be i get black boxes, so i guess its something pretty specific since it doesnt happen to any other pdf files i view.
