but one can't help but wonder if such a device will breed less assertive graduates who lack the will to stand up and voice their opinion on sensitive issues.
Better than breeding graduates who draw dubious conclusions.
230,000 we don't know but needed to boost our numbers, 60,000 we're pretty sure but still needed more of a numbers boost, and 13,000 we actually got around to testing!
No, it only looks like Martial arts. She's an expert dancer (look close and see how her movement is more like a ballet than an attack) and a Genius (aka able to calculate angles/force/etc near instantly) refer to the episode she closes her eyes after calcing the angles and shoots three bad guys.
Basicly when she is fighting in the trailer, think of it as accounting for all the variables and pre-planning the optimal strat.
Yes. The natural shift in languages, the patchwork nature of the English language itself (one part germanic, one part romantic, add a dash of irregular verbs and illogical rules*), and a batch of five billion exceptions to the exception to the exception.
Languages are not static, and will change as time goes on. People who give overly much importance on the 'current' state of the language (which has shifted even since you last took English) really should find a hobby other than being a nit picky prick.
*Such as the now defunct, "You cannot split infinitives in English because you cannot do that in latin." Ignoring the infinitive form in latin being part of the word.
I know grand parent's post is flame bait, but he does have a slight point. A friend of mine just graduated with her BS in Psych, and they pretty much told her point blank you can't do very much with a BS/BA in Psych, you have to get your masters to do anything in the field.
My advice, don't look at what's in demand / makes the most money, etc. The job market will be different when you graduate if you do so next semester or 4 years down the line. Choose something you enjoy, and can stand doing year in year out.
Autonomous is not synonymous with sentient. We already have autonomous and semi-autonomous robots, go look at robocup for example. Autonomous just means robots act autonomous, without a human directing them from a control panel.
when anyone asks me if I'm going to play WoW, I've been saying I'll never play a blizard MMORPG because blizard's security has always scucked, if they do something about it afterward is beside the point. Being tough on hacks is nice and all, but that still means players have to deal with cheaters for a time before blizard bans them / fixes it, shadowbane anyone?
That is quite possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Maybe if large public agencies pooled their purchasing decisions and agreed to use a vendors software if that vendor made their software free?
WTF.
Come on guys, lets all run down to CompUSA and propose that every geek on slashdot will shop at CompUSA if they make all their products free!
God sometimes I wish there was just a "WRONG" option for moderation. Slavery is not what the civil war was about, slavery was incidental. The civil war was about the north, who did not use something, trying to abolish said something, which the south depended on. You can replace something with slavery, popcorn, or beanie babies, but the civil was was really about states' sovereignty vs federal sovereignty, and whose trumped the other. (Especially since early on the states were almost separate countries, and the US was basically like the EU is now.) The civil war was fought for a political issue we still struggle with today, slavery just happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of the piling up of issues that led up to the civil war.
um... I'd have a different perspective

I would say it had three drives and a video card fail.... And being from 1999 you're averaging a drive failure every 1.6 years. If that's the LEAST problematic Mac you've owned, I'd hate to see the MOST problematic one.
Your chip and motherboard may still be working, but your system as a whole doesn't seem to be anything to brag about.
yeah because a computer is a resource that only has a few functions, so the schools need to have a specific use in mind before they buy them. I mean it's not like they could buy a bunch of them, and place them in some sort of "Lab" where students could use them when they needed them?
I'm assuming you're talking about Bratty, she was an AOL Guide. (First thing though, AOL Guides, and EQ Guides are totally different animals.) Bratty's case was that there were some things the volunteers had to do to keep their status that employees were being payed to do. One specific case was "member retention" i.e. when someone said they wanted to quit aol, the aol guide would have to go through the "But think of what you're missing" bs to convince them not to cancel their account. This occured in the very very very early days of AOL's program.
I've never really understood why people get their panties in a wad over the java core library. The java core is a wealth of good tools, but the language is not limited to just those tools. If you write a good library, people will use it. If you write a crappy library, getting it included in the core java library won't make people use it, it'll just waste space. I personally would rather the core library be slower to include things until they are well tested, than to include lots of new things just because they're popular. Just because YOU write a library to calculating profit given two arguments and a couple ?'s doesn't mean *I* want it included as part of the java core.
The intent is to make a political message about the government not to parady the song. Ergo Ipso Facto, it's a satire not a parody and they're in the wrong.
"I'm surprised that the people in charge aren't considering alternative systems (I know Linux would be too much to ask, but rolling out some OS X machines would be good). "
Feigned innocence has always been one of my pet peeves. You're posting on Slashdot, you shouldn't be so shocked and surprised that windows machines are prevalent as general-use academic systems.
Fact: Windows holds a huge majority of the desktop market Fact: The MAJORITY of PEOPLE are going to need to be comfortable with, and semi-knowledgeable of Windows and Office.
Conclusion: It makes no sense for a university to buy an ass load of Macs for general student use when those students are going to be going into the workforce using Windows.
At my University the campus is almost completely dominated by Windows systems except for two areas: Graphic Design / Art department (Macs), and the Computer Science department (Sun Blade 150's running Solaris.)
You use the right tool for the right job, you don't tear out your eyes and run around campus screaming "WINDOWS IS EEEEEEVIL OMG OMG OMG" as that just gets you pepper sprayed by the campus police. Nor do you confuse the majority of students by sticking a mac in front of them when they have a) likely been using windows their whole life, b) they probably HAVE a windows system, and c) are likely confused when faced with differing environments. And lastly just because they didn't choose mac, doesn't mean it wasn't considered.
Well, first of all it depends on what machines you have now and what they are being used for. I'm going to assume you have PII 233-400ish systems as I seem to remember those being the mid range back then.
Assuming the systems are not optimal for what they're needed for, I would: 1. Replace any broken machines. 2. Before replacing machines, determine if you need MORE machines than you have. In that case I would buy new machines but not use them to replace anything. I would just add them to the network. 3. If you have enough machines, and no desire/space for extra ones I would phase out the slowest systems and replace them. 4. I would either put the slowest systems in the children's wing (if they break them, who cares) or as word processors. Or, if you have no desire/space for that, wipe the old systems and either give them to needy families or sell them at your book auctions (most public libs do those).

And if they respond with anything other than "Anyone who writes something like that should be fired." Fire them.

Yeah, by the time they get to the last movie (whenever she finishes the series) Potter's going to have a beard, three kids, and a beer belly.

I have a niche idea that doesn't really belong in the core API, but maybe if I post it on slashdot people will care!

Most likely per-"Physical Processor" will be changed to per-"Physical Processor Die" since the multi-cores still share a die.
