tens to hundreds of thousands of years
so this "quick" evolution occurs in that time frame? Isn't that quite a long time? Wouldn't there be a substantial amount of fossils over a period of that time?
I guess I'm thinking of all natural disasters in recorded history that have preserved living things (pompeii specifically). Over those thosands/millions of years, wouldn't some kind of disaster captures transitional fossils? Wouldn't there be a group of half-and-half creatures somewhere?
2) They denied the existence of any transitional fossils, and basically said that scientists were arranging bones and fossils how they wanted to see them.
Where are the transitional fossils? I don't keep up on this, but last I heard there were very few, if any, fossils that were suspected of being "transitional". It just always seems to me that if the earth was really millions of years old, there would be thousands or millions of transitional fossils, not a handful of "maybes". How do scientists account for this?
why do all the evolutionary articles that slashdot posts always talk against creationists? If evolution if sound and proven doctrine, shouldn't it stand on its own without having to attack the other side?
I recently read a book about evolution from the 60's and the statements it made that were supposedly fact, have now been proven wrong. It seems that every new evolutionary theory or discovery disproves an old one but, at the time, those theories were cold hard facts and you were a fool if you didn't accept them. Believing in evolution or not is every person's right, but it seems that the theories and "facts" are always changing. 50 or 100 years from now what will the books say about our great discoveries and theories?
I can't tell you how many people I know or heard of who failed out of college because of games. I was lucky enough to pull myself out of it, but it is seriously an addiction. I've been playing games since atari (forget which one) and I've never stopped. After doing terrible in school, I finally found a good balance between "real life" and games. Believe me, no one loves games more then me, but you have to unplug and learn to apprecite "small doses". Most effictive for me was having people hide my game cds (yes, I'm serious) so I could get work done. Now I just play one level, or a round or two and then turn it off. Another piece of advice would be to limit the kinds of games you play. For example, there is no way you can keep up with first person shooters, turn-based, and blizzard's electronic crack games. Just choose one type, or one game at a time (ID all the way for me baby!). Also, think about how much coding you could do with that time!?!
This lisit sums up my first 2 years of school
You know you are addicted to games when:
1) architecture and buildings make you think of quake levels
2) you fall asleep in class and dream about shooting your teacher with a rocket
3) you know if its more efficient to use your initial money in starcraft to train a drone or hold it for a barracks
4) you refer to your friends by their game handles
5) you've played ever version of counter-strike
6) you sell game characters or items on ebay
7) you can fire up doom or wolfenstein (I) and navigate every level perfectly
8) you visit bluesnews more then once a day
9) you've beat every level of mythI+II on legendary without losing a single man
10) you have beaten all of the "might and magic" games
11) no one can beat you in street fighter
"And obviously this is a rumor"
O, yes of course this is a rumor because no one who likes linux ever does anything
wrong
since we are all such great programmers, we all know that X = perfect person for all X that are linux users. but cmdrtaco hath spoken so all cronies bow down and worship him.
I used to come to slashdot for the latest news, now I come for the "great" movie reviews...
Being a soon-to-be college graduate, what advice do you have to someone who would like to work for IBM in the "linux division"?
What do you look for in potential employees, especially those us without much experience?
"innovate" count: 7
what's wrong with M$? normally they give us at least a dozen new innovations with a new product, espically something like this.
anyone know the "innovate" count in the average M$ article?
I wish they would give us something good like multi-colored blue screens of death, it could double as a screen saver =)
How long will it take until they offically release the stable 7.0? Is there any word directly from RedHat? If not, how long does it usually take for it to hit the shelves and mirrors. Do they base their releases purely on development or is marketing and business the dominating factor? This all may have already been discussed, but unfortunately I don't have time to read the 300+ posts. thanks all,
I agree. I started reading slashdot a little over a year ago and I thought it was the greatest site on the internet. But since then, my liking for "it" has really gone downhill; I think it might be because of the andover.net thing. who knows.
actually, given their past advertisments, street fighter characters would fit in well. use the pentium 4 to charge blanka's electricity and power up ryu's ha-do-ken!!
or they can just have more idiots doing 70's dances in lab suits..... Josh
I think the absolute worst thing about this whole story is that Daikatana was originally suppose to be a "Quake Killer" (Yes, check your game magazines from 4 years ago;-). Well, how many Quakes have been released since then? I haven't played it, but from what I read and hear I don't even think its better then the original Quake.
Its really sad about Looking Glass, Thief was an excellent game; something that Daikatana is not.
this is exactly why i have not seen episode one yet and exactly why i will not see any of the prequels until they are all released in a boxed set or on a single DVD. lucas must be the greediest person on the earth; first people rush out to buy the special VHS because there isnt going to be a DVD, and then after he's made about a billion dollars on that, he changes his mind and says he's going to make a DVD. then after you buy each episode on DVD, he'll release all of them on one big special DVD boxed set or something with special scenes of him going to the bathroom!!!
ethernet?!?! did i see that right? it comes ethernet compatible? now i know im getting old.
i know all y'all out there remember the good ol days of excite bike and legend of zelda...or maybe even that atari classics. these kids now a days are just spoiled.
female CS majors on the decline? female CS majors? there is such a thing? where???? only a handful here at RIT but thats the life, i guess. ive gotten used to seeing the same classroom full of guys for 3 years.
the wording in the post of this story makes it seem like a "bad thing" that someone would put up a sign that says something about Jesus. is there something wrong with someone expressing themselves in that way? sometimes on/. it seems like there is a huge outcry when something "technical" gets censored, but little concern when the censorship, ignorance, and flamming comments concern something other then free speech on the interenet. IMHO, if you're going to rant and rave about censorship and offensive actions against constitutional/human rights, you should not violate them yourselves.
"ignorance is bliss" and if it wasnt for a little internet site called/. i would still be extremelly 'blissful'. you have to face the facts: anyone who knows anything is too busy doing something to take time to tell the world about what computing really is. so the task is left to the ignorant. we do all the work, they write their pretty little aritcles and bebate such things as whether win2k is better then win98.
I really hate to ask this, but why would you even consider an OS other then windows for this specific user (80 year old grandfather). I bought a system from Dell for my grandparents and I found that Windows 98 works well for them. I simply bought them some step-by-step books and put everything they would need on the desktop. This allows them to do everything they bought the computer for without having to navigate any folders or file systems. And after a brief explanation of the notion of "C:", they began to understand how to install new programs (well, games) that they bought in a store. Of course they have called me or emailed me with questions, but they're usually easy to answer. So in my personal experience I would just say go with the direct mail order flow; that way he gets the tech support and all the other "hey, look at this cool feature" goodies. -thanks
This person's comment is 100% true. I am in my third year of computer science and I can attest that the theory is much more important the learning "the language of the week" (nice term by the way slk). I have never seen a better distinction between "training" and "education". Basically its all a question of when and how long you want to be in the programming industry. If you want to start making some serious money right away then you should go for the training, but you're losing the long term skills. If you want in for life, go with the education and you'll be able to adapt easily to the times. However, the most important thing to remember when picking a college is pick one that is right for you; not someone else. It's your life.

Won't the data on the CDs be lost by then? I thought CDs only had a realiable life of ~20 years.

all you have to do is accept Jesus Christ as the son of God who died for YOUR sins on the cross.
