I, as a prospective employee, would stand up, shake your hand, and say goodbye. I sure as hell don't want to work for any company that treats me like that on my first interview. I think any self respecting, intelligent person would do the same and as a result I'm not sure what kind of employees you would get. Then again, I'm not desperate for a job. If you want to test grammar and email skills just send the person an "informal" email asking some question about details on the resume. Request a quick response and you should see what you want.

For computers (like you pr0n loving uncle's) that are past the "critical point" of spyware programs (i.e. shitloads of the stuff), think of it like a Wack-A-Mole game. Now, in the case of spyware, think of it like a Wack-A-Mole game with 500, posessed, cracked out, hyperactive, mutant moles that have predator-like camo. Now, just you playing you have little chance of winning. Get your buddies Ad-Aware and Spybot and you have a better chance, but it still sucks. You could play for hours and you MIGHT win eventually. Reformatting is like taking 20 gallons (75.7 L) of gasoline (petrol), dousing the whole game, and having the immense satisfaction of torching the entire thing, moles and all.

There may have been other ways, but the reformat is still the quickest and easiest in some cases. The people I feel real sorry for are the ones who don't even know how to reformat and end up buying another computer (yes, I have met people who have done this).

That's nice, but I have DirecTV (refuse to give money to local cable co.). Sure, I could stack three four DirecTV receivers in one room plus a PC for the MythTV, but that would also add $4.99 for each receiver (extra $20 a month). So, for me MythTV would still be "Free as in Free iPod."

I have a 2 tuner DirecTiVo, in one box, for $4.99 a month (so for 2 tuners, MythTV and DirecTivo would be same monthly $$ but a lot more equipment for MythTV) Plus the seemless integration with DirecTV is very nice especially for anyone who has a non-technical wife who likes a neat looking entertainment system.

I know it is hard to believe, but there are actually software devaloping, gadget loving, technofreaks (like me) who still have valid reasons to choose TiVo over MythTV et al.

That is one "bug" that always bothered me. Yeah, I know if certain things are happening at the exact moment you hit the power button things *could* go badly. But I have simply pulled power from my Windows computer(s) dozens of time without ANY problems whatsoever. Sure, the computer complains and says "Must Run Scandisk" at startup, but usually skip that without issue as well. Hell, I have my computer automatically power up after a power failure and often I get home to find the microwave clock flashing, but the computer is just fine.

WHOA! back the bus up ... In no way did I say that slavery should be legal or that "socialistic" laws should be revoked. That is a bit of a jump there. I do know from experience that the better my company does financially the better my benifits package is. They offer excellent health care, great savings matching, and much more not because they are mandated to by law but because they want to get the best employees to get the job done. When the economy went downhill, some of these benifits scaled back since the company wasn't doing as well.

Still, if a robot can effectively and efficiently do you job then perhaps there wasn't really a "job" there to begin with. Saying that providing employment is a liability not true where "real" jobs exist. I know a robot cannot do my job and they my company cannot function without people like me. If someday a robot can do my job, I will go into the robot building industry.

This will probably be modded off the map, but but I have to admit, I am a bit tired of the "Companies are only in it for the profit" arguements. Of course they are. The part of this arguement that is left out is that compaines employ people. If companies do well then the people working for those companies have job security, good benifits, etc. Therefore, in a round-about way, corporate welfare does go to the people; it goes to good working people who contribute to society. Now, of course there are "bad" companies that screw their employees out of benifits (e.g. EA), have corrupt execs, etc. but these tend to be self correcting eventually (e.g. Enron, et al)
