can't iTunes run WMP file? Is it because Apple won't let them or because Microsoft won't let them? Can Microsoft Media play AAC files? Why not?
All files downloaded from iTunes (music store) can be played on any other system if you go through the effort to convert them. Same as Windows media files.
I really don't get the fuss about converting files. If I want easy access to my CDs I rip them to my computer and change their format. If I wanted to listen to an album I bought in the 80s I recorded it to a tape. If I wanted to listen to an 8 track... oh wait - I am a little young for those... but for most all things, if I want to listen to it in a different form than what I bought it in, I went through the effort to change the format.
Okay - because you have ADD it should be okay to watch something besides the road in a couple ton vehicle driving on a road more than 3 miles an hour. Last time I checked roads were built to get from one place to another, not to amuse the masses.
Want to watch a DVD - get in the back seat with the kids or take a bus.
That might work, but most of the technicians who would be doing this at the university are work study - not $50hr workers because the technicians know they can train the work study who is a lot cheaper to do a simple job of adding RAM or swapping out a HD or burner. Yes, the technicians are there, but they don't do that work - not at the past two universities I have worked at.
Just for giggles, I looked on our Dell purchasing site and the cheapest standard (as in university set) computer is $1037. Searching the Dell site not using my university ID I found the same computer for $739. Now, who is getting ripped off here? Good deal for the university now isn't it?
Why is PC hardware getting so cheap? I think because the schools, governments, and big business are buying at such large markups and replacing unnecessarily that places like Dell can sell the home computer for a lot cheaper.
But universities don't buy cheap $500 PCs. Working at a university I see whole departments overhaul their computers every two years with brand new Dells. Do they need them? Nope. A little spring cleaning would make them work just fine, but no, they need new computers with all the bells and whistles just to use Word, Excel, and Outlook. Dell has a great scam going with huge markups for these institutional PCs.
Yes, a home user or even a student can buy a brand new PC for $500, but for some reason universities feel they need to buy new monitors with their old (2 year) PCs, add a brand new burner instead of taking the old one out and swapping it in a new machine etc. Student discounts are great, but the university does not get these. They think they do, but they don't.
Microsoft could embrace Open Source Software. Microsoft could be eating babies. Microsoft could make commercials that make no sense. Microsoft could attack Homer Simpson. Microsoft could be fucked in Europe and Asia. Microsoft could cure cancer. Microsoft could do a boat load of things Is there really an article based on couldas? What? ------- What the gov needs to do is monitor the telemarketers' outgoing calls, and compare them to the do not call list. That'll stop them. Otherwise, they know most people are too lazy to report them. -------
Why should I let the government spend my tax money to hire people to monitor these calls when the people are to lazy to report them? If they are to lazy - it's not that important to them, hence not worth the government getting $11,000 a pop for.
Actually, for $11,000 a pop, they should be hiring people for each one of those fines (being that the poverty level in this country is @14,000), giving people jobs ya know, those who lose their jobs for making the phone calls.
I'm not arguing that file sharing of other works is legal or moral. Didn't really make a stance on that one way or the other.
What I want to know is if anyone has actually gone to court, civil or criminal. Telling someone it is cheaper to settle(pay) out of court to me is extortion when it is someone with many lawyers on a payroll vs Joe Schmo.
I would be more impressed with their tactics if they went after the people in the subways who sell their merchandise and showed that the money they received from these lawsuits actually went to the artists rather than the lawyers typing up these letters.
Have they actually taken people to court? We know they don't like people giving away their music, but have they actually gone to court?
I read a lot about how they threaten to go to court and offer a way to get out of this ($$$$$$$), but haven't read about a court case involving the RIAA and a person they are accusing of stealing their music (civil or criminal) that has even gotten to the point to of getting into a courtroom to be negotiated or plead out.
Until they set a precedent by actually showing their faces in a courtroom I think it's extortion to keep a sinking business plan afloat rather than change business plans. But that's just me, a silly consumer rather than a big company with scary people in suits who can get their lawyer to type up threatening letters on legal sized paper.
I'm confused. Doesn't one have to show "how" the thing to be patented does what it does? I heard through the rumor mill that Coca-Cola won't patent it's formula because then others will now know how to copy it.
So if this is true (and it might be wrong, that's why I am asking) wouldn't a closed source company patenting something then make it's source open for all to see and look at?
AAC? Cause if not - I'm not buying it. I'm not converting all my music from one format to another. I won't be buying a player until it does. Oh, wait it does support AAC.
Sadly they now have so many things that are not easy to use, or have so many functions no one knows what to do.
I was amazed when I saw a CompUSA commercial for how they would come in, install the computer, wireless printer, and camera for you. If a regular consumer needs someone to come in and install it and show you how to use it, it probably shouldn't be on the market for the general public. This is not just computer related items, but since that's the topic...
Most universities already have this service. The professor might not know it exists, but check the other departments to see if they have one (not the scanner - but the service at the school). It is usually somewhat intertwined with a Distance Learning center or department.
It takes away the cost of printing lectures/notes/required readings from the departments and tacks it onto the students who now seem to pay for printing above a certain limit in the labs.
At least this is the way at the universities I have worked at.
Actually it is in the top of the email. It say that this email contains images that have not been loaded (because this is the default with Mail.app), would you like to load them. If so one clicks on a big ass button that says "LOAD IMAGES" to see them.
Asking users to plug/unplug their network cable is just plain silly.
I'd have to disagree. I think making someone work for something might make them a bit more appreciative of what needs to be done to maintain it.
I told my father to take his computer to a local shop to have it fixed rather than drive up to me. Once he learned how much it costs to have things fixed that can easily be avoided he seemed much more interested in learning how to take care of things than thinking "this thing should just do as I want it to" (and he stopped downloading stupid ass screensavers.
Do any of these extensions work on the Mac?

Now that's comedy! If I didn't waste my mod point by replying to this thread...

Have you seen the roads in Alaska? There is NOTHING to look at for hundreds of miles.
How about the road? Maybe the two six inch thick yellow lines in the middle of the road?

See, if you hadn't downloaded it you would have gone to see the movie 5 times instead of only 4!! You owe them $8.50!!
Where do you get to see a movie for $8.50?
Compared to Desktop Manager. So do I.

Correct - explain - enlighten me, please.

Shit! Now what should I do with my iPod?
That sounds about right. They do what they can get away with. It's the American way!
Have you seen the size of that thing? My wireless router is smaller and lighter.
If I want exercise I will walk past the gym thank you.

Well if they bring their machines to you and you plug them into the network - now who's fault is it?
Of course if Microsoft changed when the firewall loaded all the people would have to actually install that patch... how many actually do?
Hey dad!
I still have a few more years to pay off those loans. Maybe you can help me out now? I'll fix your computer for ya.

A little work goes a long way.
Did you submit the story or just expect Slashdot to know that an AC's school was given computers?
I believe that is why there is that nifty submit story link on each page.
Try it and then when they don't post your story bitch about it.
