Actually, healthy young minds are no longer into RIAA-sanctioned music, like in the eras you described. The biggest movement that 'old people' can't connect with these days is the 'indie' movement. Staying 'young-at-heart' while still being into good music means clicking with the indie-hipster crowd.
Sounds like a contradiction in terms, but reality has a way of playing cruel jokes like this. Maybe it's for the best...maybe it's just confirming the free-market capitalist hard-liner's worst fears... Who knows...I just think it's painfully funny.
By the way, I didn't say he was forcing. I said he has a reason to force. Looking back at it, that seems like a pretty huge difference. You may have overreacted just a tad.
-his OS is the most vulnerable to malware attack
-his OS is forcing closed standards on the rest of the world, and he's contributing by using it (debatable)
-the company that makes his OS is leveraging its monopoly position to bully other potentially more valuable contributors to our culture
Forcing isn't difficult. All you have to do is buy into an ideology, and we all do that on a daily basis. Looking at it from a balanced perspective, it seems obvious enough to me that MS is causing more harm than the alternatives. I'm being rational about this. I know this isn't the only correct perspective. I just think it's the most obviously correct one to any human being without a vested interest.
Bottom line, you're right. I shouldn't vocalize my assumption that he has to force something. Others probably won't interpret force in the same way that I intended it (the softest possible way). Sorry about that... I tried to hint at my stance with the joking comment at the end.
Ohhh.. You're a gamer. That means you have a rabidly rational reason to force yourself to be happy with what Microsoft produces. I'm sure you understand the notion that, even if you wanted to try an alternative, you'd be dead in the water for serious gaming.
I used to be like that. Now, I just use MS products because I'm used to them, they tend to work OK, and I'm too lazy to try alternatives. However, I understand the problems with the MSopoly and mildly resent the company for exacerbating them on a regular basis. Why don't we just call this the correct perspective?;-)
Actually, satanism is a real ritual-infused philosophy/religion dreamed up by Anton Szandor LaVey. From wikipedia:
He is the author of The Satanic Bible and the founder of Satanism, a synthesized system of his understanding of human nature and the insights of philosophers who advocated materialism and individualism, for which he claimed no "supernatural inspiration". LaVey viewed "Satan" not as a literal deity or entity, but as an historic and literary figure symbolic of Earthly values.
Baha'i is very similar to what you describe except they have a few more stringent rules. It's probably the closest 'world religion' to the ideas you try to embrace...
Remember those ridiculous tabloid shows, "Hard Copy" and "A Current Affair"... I can't remember which one (does it matter?), but that is Bill's origin. Speaks volumes about his character...
Music videos are basically commercials, anyways... You really think the artists rake in the cash because MTV plays their videos? It's likely the other way around much of the time (think radio payola). Free exposure via youtube is exactly how the parent described it.
Videos of the quality youtube/google video provide are basically disposable content, anyways. A fan who's truly interested in an artist is probably more likely to buy the DVD/CD after seeing something that interests them on youtube.
The ones who are truly interested in keeping a stranglehold on content promotion/delivery are the labels not the artists. The artists are being forced to fork over a peice of the pie just to make joe-blow-listener aware of their existence, and with today's technology that shouldn't be the case.
It depends where the round-trips are to/from and what class of service he purchases. A london-sydney roundtrip could concievably earn you around 40k miles if you purchase a first class ticket and maintain 'elite' status with the airline. Considering the cost of a trip like that, the free trip for 90k miles would be worth only a fraction of the paid trips...
The major networks have all since been gobbled up by giant media conglomerates like Viacom and Vivendi. Viacom actually owned CBS for a while until 2005 when they split. Star Trek happens to be a Paramount property, and Paramount was also owned by viacom.
Welcome to 2006...media conglomerates buy and sell your favorite creative properties almost daily.
If you're unaware of the dangers of GMO foods and the biotech industry that produces them, "The Future of Food" is an excellent documentary to get you up to speed. I would highly recommend it.
Are you saying that we should have cheaply carpet bombed the place, as opposed to using all these costly high-tech weapons?
YES. That's exactly what I'm saying. "Precision" guided weapons and "Smart" Bombs have given our military a false sense of security in regards to attacking targets with a high risk of civilian casualties. In reality, the weapons are still highly unpredictable. Weapons, now, are required to strike within a circular area (CEP) of 13 meters to be considered accurate (as opposed to 3 meters in 1998). Even considering the fact that these weapons can miss their targets by up to 40 feet, only approximately 70% of the precision guided weapons used in the Iraq War can be considered "accurate." It is likely a large portion of that 70% still inflicted collateral damage.
In the Iraq War, up to 15,000 military combaants were killed in the face of up to 4,300 civilian noncombatant deaths. During the Desert Storm conflict, 20,000 Iraqi soldiers and 3,500 civilians were killed. 68% of the munitions used in this war were precision-guided, compared with 6.5 % in 1991. I think these statistics speak for themselves.
Your arguement falls in line with the extremism associated with the "information wants to be free" movement. I think it's obvious that we're inching closer and closer to a time when artificial measures created to control information such as music, movies, and television will be completely invalidated. Some would say that, with the advent of the information age, that time has already arrived. Many of the 'pirates', 'hackers', and 'crackers' out there believe they are waging a war on behalf of the seemingly inevitible shift towards this freedom ideal.
Me? I don't know. I think you've got a point, but of course, the human emotional impact of the current situation is a little less extreme than that of segregation. Unfortunately, I think it has the potential to explode into a much more volitile and painful situation. The more free information 'wants to be', the more draconion the artificial measures created to control it will have to be.
As someone who recently was a 17 year old "electronic Hezbollah", I can say ideology had nothing to do with my choice to download and share movies. I did it, and still do, because it's easy and costs basically nothing. Sure I don't like the MPAA but I would still torrent if they didn't exist.
Visit any piracy-centric message board, and you'll find countless arguements about the ideologies that justify sharing copyrighted content. You'll even find it here on slashdot most any time there's a story like this one. You may not be doing it for those reasons, but many others have convinced themselves that they are...and are quite vocal about it. Look at the collection of legal threats sometimes flaunted on the front page of piratebay, for crying out loud... It's just human nature that we tend to dig for excuses to justify our actions so we can avoid the feelings of guilt typically associated with them...
We're talking about PDAs, Smartphones, and Gameboy Advances here. Devices of this size can't even touch quake3, yet.
Think about it like this... They gave it the 5500 number for a reason. It seems to me that they feel this chip fits in with the 5000 generation of nvidia products in terms of performance. You'll be pleased to know that my geforce 5700fx w/ athlon 2100xp runs Quake3 "easily" at 1024x768. This rig also happens to run doom 3 with some difficulty at 640x480...a little more difficulty at 800x600...and pure misery at 1024x768. I would venture to guess that we can expect similar results from the 5500.
It seems like this could have far-reaching implications for professionals whose jobs requires them to be responsible for a large number of human lives. Airline Pilots (god they'll demand even more money), Bus Drivers (not just a low/middle-class job anymore?), and Taxi drivers...for example... I wonder how long before some concrete laws and policies are set for humans infected with these parasites. Hopefully, it won't get too out of hand...
Come-on OS people...start leading and quit following.
Give them some time. The community appears to, just now, be coming into maturity. They are *required* to play catch-up for the time being because joe-blow-end-user has expectations based on the companies/apps that OS guys are trying to "follow."
I like what you're trying to convey...pretty much all around, but I still think you're far too dismissive and detail oriented. I'd like to delve a little deeper into some of the stuff we've discussed, but I really can't hang with you when it comes to time invested/data/knowledge. I'll make a mental note to revisit some of the more ethereal schauberger stuff with you when I get a chance to start digging into it a little more, but I can't make you any promises. I've been intending to read up on him pretty hard, but I just haven't found the time.
Suffice to say, based on vague recollections of infinitely more "scientific" (in your sense of the word) studies than you've alluded to, I see a hint of promise in the whole living water thing... Please don't mistake me for one of those goofballs that jumps on every 'healing revolution' bandwagon that drives by as long as it has a faint odor of science. I enjoy reading about the somewhat misdirected genius of people like Schauberger and Wilhelm Reich...then exploring what types of modern developments have come out of it. I can't wait for the string theorists to get their act together because I can envision the wacky theories of people like these two being totally elucidated by string theory. Overly optomistic? Maybe... Somewhere between you and me, I think there might just be an ideal balance.
At the same time, his work seems to have spawned a lot of nonsense about water that only works if you ignore everything we know about the physics of magnetism and chemistry.
This is exactly what I was talking about... All that nonsense about water is garnering a little more attention, these days. Have you seen the studies that show microscopic pictures of frozen water crystals after they've been exposed to different words. Some (or all) of that "nonsense" may end up being very real phenomena. You want a mainstream example? How nonsensical is Quantum physics when you stick it next to Newtonian physics. I can't really cite examples from its history, but I'm willing to bet there were some schaubergeresque nonsensical ideas that sparked the revolution that has us where we are today. Most of what you read when you look into the history are the initial experiments that showed particles in 2 places at once, but someone had that idea before it was teste...and someone decided to test it while half of his colleagues were probably calling him a nut. Look at the string theorists of today.
This is how science works... Hard/fast dismissal like you're promoting only holds us back. Science smells more and more like a fundamentalist religion, these days... I can almost see where the IDers are coming from when they start bagging on hardcore evolutionists to discredit their theories...
Sometimes you have to choose between exploring a diverse swath of revolutionary ideas from a generally broad perspective and making a single revolutionary idea your life's work to prove.
If you're not willing to get down to the nitty-gritty-detail level of research for the benefit of you're theory, it's not likely that anyone else is going to do it for you. So, what to do? Drop the other potentially great ideas that you have so you can perform mind-numbing studies and give yawner-lectures? Or... Do you hit one idea after the next, milk them for all you can without sacrificing diversity, get labeled as a kook for not having enough "proof" for any of it... I'll take the latter, thanks. Recognition isn't my thing. Some day...a great mind will see the potential of my ideas and explore them as they should be explored.
Take a look at Viktor Schauberger, as an example... Though, technological limitations may have prevented some of his work from being sufficiently explore, many of his ideas were so far out there that most scientists of the time wouldn't touch them with a 10 ft pole.
