    the Thinking Machine is a creation of Jacques Futrelle if I recall his name right and is actually Professor Van Dusen. That is the title given to a collection of detective stories of Van Drusen.
      Futrelle died aboard the Titanic.

    A whole TB and there is STILL not a thing to watch! Seriously. I am more interested in an affordable Blue Ray WRITER for backup. I am sure the typical coach potato will love this but a burner is all that will get the DVDR out of my machine.

    you take a 30 carbine, trim to length. fire form using a reduced charge and a 00buck ball (which is exactly .320), then use a cast 8mm Nambu bullet sized to .320, trim and load with a reduced 32ACP load. this makes a working 8mm Roth-Steyr round for firing in the 1907 Austro-Hungarian pistol of the same name.

    THAT kind of obscure caliber! :-)

    by Hobby I handload. That is, I create special rounds in obscure calibers and target shoot. I realize few here would share my hobby, or understand it. Being technically minded in the geek science of ballistics does NOT brand me a terrorist in my eyes, but this would do so on the waterboards of Homeland Security. This is what we have come to?

    Powerlines? Have you looked into it? the hash this produces in the radio spectum is unbelievable. It disrupts communication...and...opens a security can of worms you have not even considered. Putting the net on power always struck me as similar to using the water line to carry the sewer waste; after all, sharring a pipe is not that difficult and it already goes into the home...then the FCC can sell the sewer pipe ....

    Why does this remind me of the "lettre de cachet"? -a fill-in-the-blank warrant the rent a thug is sent out with where he fills it in as he needs. France got rid of them in 1790, our Constitution has provisions against this. Now all it takes is a Lawer with a power tie and a BIC Pen to ruin your life.

    I scanned this whole thread. NOT ONE had a score higher then 1. Yes its a dead end. No one on slashdot went back to rate this.
    Unix admins/apps programmers/ and other lofty sorts see it as a dead end so it is, Such are the population here so QED. Most of these articles say something like: "I worked the HD for 6 months then got promoted and.."
    FEW remarks come from dedicated tech support pros. People who have worked a desk long enough to know the quirks, know the tricks, know how to keep peopel productive. Remarks seem to come mainly from those who see it as a bad experience (The Burger King remarks below) to be through on your way to greatness, not a destination in its own right. I work tech support and have for years. All I need do to ruin a sysadmin's day is call in sick.

    Here in Oregon we haev NO SALES TAX AT ALL. it has been brought up 8 times by our legislature and it has been voted out by citizen rferendum every single time. Yes we are loons in many respects but this one is a point of pride. I wonder how many companies will re-locate to this tax haven...

    slashdot and similar sites, news feeds in email from various special interests; political, scientific, technical, social; RSS, occasional link from irc or other chat; and what my peer group/ family sends me usually via email. Oh and I also I hear of Brittney at work from the 2 people who still watch TV.

    You missed the point. It is NOT the fact that Congresscritters are the foxes guarding the henhouse and can vote themselves a wage. The Idea is that ALL FEDERAL WORKER'S pay gets cut too. ALL Fed Wages! and THEY VOTE. Would YOU vote for someone who just cut your pay? And since Congresscritters are all about votes (or they are out of a job), they will do anything in their power to apease a voting block as HUGE as the federal employees in their district. -That last fact is sad in and of itself...

    There is a simple simple way to limit government spending but it will never fly. Most government employees vote right? SO.....

    Given Budget for year is X. If spending = X + 10% then all government employee pay is REDUCED the amount of the overage or 10%. If spending = x -10% for that year then government pay goes up say 5% In plain language: cut pay when the budget is missed. One year of this and the wastrels woud be voted OUT by workers interested in the bottom line. See? told'ya it would never fly.

    one point on this. there is a Canadian TV show I really like. I cannot get it here in the States. Even their web page has a "This show cannot be viewed in your country" error when you attempt to load clips. Does this mean that soon the actually good programming in Canada will be legally viewable here? I sometimes see TV from S Africa, Argentina, Singapore and India. it pains me to think I may need to use not legal means to be informed about these countries and about Canada....
