I recall when a excavation was taking place of some Mycenae survivals. A room was discovered. The resident archeologist was speculating that this must be a household temple similar to the Lars niche found in later Roman ruins. A worker on the site suddenly piped up: "Sure looks like a toilet to me.." And so it proved to be.
In the middle ages, fabulous tales of a kingdom in the east under the king "Prester John" were told and scoffed at till Marco Polo brought back stories far more fabulous.
Much of Antrhopology, Archeology, and History is speculation. Pure and simple.
I would not discount any story no mater how loony till it is PROVED to be false. And "proved" to me means passign the litmus test of the fellow holding the shovel, not the prestigious doctor with the fancy degree and not a lick of common sense..
Government is all about separating you from your money, your rights, your property, or anything else people with a pension for being bossy dream up. That is its natural function. Do you recall a show called "My sister Sam?" perfect illustration of how safe any information controlled by government becomes.
If Government passes a law, "owns" the law, and control distribution of the law, then you become guilty of a law you know not of, have no way of becoming aware of, nor any way to even have your attorney quote it in your defense without first paying the state for "fair use". George Orwell was a optimist...
I recall a documentary (BBC?) on a Icelandic volcano named Laki some 200 years back which blighted Europe. The show focused on a cloud of volcanic gas and the resultant illness that occurred among rural peasants. The speculation was that this was probably the result of silica in the cloud being breathed by those who worked outside. Similarly the 1815 eruption of Tambora caused the "Year without Summer" with famine among the Swiss, and unique weather reported in Pennsylvania. Pollutants are not in this league, but, they can indeed have world ranging effect.
I started in this industry as an operator on a IBM OS/360 model 67 thats a 65 with a DAT box (digital analog converter. It ran OS/360 in MFT Multiprocessing Fixed Task, with HASP Houston Automatic Spoolong Program. From there I went to dual 65s runnoing shared DASD (disks) Shared SPOOL runing MVT with HIH HASP which was a varriant that allowed the world's first multiCPU archetecture. It required two operators who were tuned like identical twins to run without issue.
Main Frame means a IBM System 360 370 3033 3081 3084 3090 or whatever the heck they use now and comparables like the CDC 6600 or 7600, the Sperry Univac, the Burroughs and a few others.
I know the Itty Bitty Machine Company's products best though I have worked everythign from Amydal to PRIME to WANG.
antecdote. 1st chat I ever did was via a master operator console to a RJE (Remote Job Entry) it started out: $DMR1,'HOW BOUT LUNCH?',LOG=N and ended with some well remembered pleasure.
I used to work IT for a metro cop-shop. I can recall being in the main room fixing a monitor (that long ago). I heard two guys talking and one said "Yeah I need to go to court today to Testi-lie".
In other news IBM and AMD have hired linguists to invent new words for this process. "silicide, damascene copper contacts, and advanced activation techniques." seemed far to cool to saddle with the brand- name of the new "Blubberon(TM)" and "Humpderon(TM) processor line.
Thank You. Media contained much hullabaloo about the flaw, but no clear explanation of what was the nature of the flaw...till now. And to the other posters: I considered my way of phrasing the interrogative clear and unmistakable English. If it was not, then I apologize for any confusion.
Mozart died in poverty and had his body dumped in a pauper's grave, John Fogerty wrote the anthems of a generation and later worked as a DJ while other reaped benefit of his songs. The list of artists who created art that made millions FOR SOMEONE ELSE is legion. Whatever license scheme is devised has only one purpose and the artist will not gain a cent from, it. PERIOD. Its all about money, its all about stealing it is all about business and not about art.
I personally hold all rights on one song. only one. It isn't something that will stand the centuries like Bach but it is my very own. I decided to put it up on my web site to give it away. That right does not exists for Fogerty, Little Richard, and many others. Fortunately I did not get famous so I could buy back my song, and did.
I agree about education and the fact that some drugs MAY help, but seeing it on that picture box is a knee-jerk turn off to me . Idiots in Medicine: My ex works for a medical association (Docotor's Guild) reviewing bills. They are a RN with a MBA and has for years told me tales that would have people in deep trouble if they did not have "MD" after their name. Used to be, Hospital was where you went to die. Now it is where you go to die and loose a life time's savings and work so Admins, Doctors, government agencies and other such can live the good life and your decendents are never burdened with concerns about your bank account, property, house, Grandma's ring or anything else that possibly has value. Medicine is money, Money is Medicine that is the equation today...
Sorry I do not currently have mod points. Well said. in 1982 I stopped watching ALL network news and never got the habit again. Yes media gives you moving pictures of what is (may be?) happening and a reporter with just the right amount of wave to their hair. I prefer black and white print. I have found that a blend of the reportage of US News as reported in Singapore, Hong Kong, New Delhi, and Wellington is FAR more reliable then anything the Alphabet Nets produce. I do miss a lot of drug commercials that way but I think I cankive (longer?) without that.
Queen Isabella had the gold left over from the pillage of Grenada. Columbus was state sponsored and died in poverty Cortez was backed by merchants and he looted Mexico and made a fortune
In any case, Spain in the long run got zip from the New World, Little broke England made out like bandits. I don't CARE if Portugese Mandarin or Bantu becomes the language of space. As long as mankind gets out there. My point was that NASA had lofty goals once and has de-evolved into a retirement program for Pointy Haired Bosses and Might-Have-Run Engineers.
Burning of the Library of Alexandria, the Witch Scare of the middle ages, Shakespeare's re-write of British history in Macbeth... "I have ancient proof that space aliens wrote the Declaration of Independence, That Howard Hughes wrote a will, that Elvis had a love child with _____ fill in bimbo du jours.. oh and do be careful, the ink's not quite dry".. Changing our collective memory is nothing new.
NASA has issues serious issues. If you want a good idea of the problems at NASA; look at a wiring chart for the Space shuttle. Switch connects to relay to pressure gage to wire to 1982 transistor to charge voltage state to be read by a analog voltage meter to be fed to a serial port on a 8088 processor to...you get the picture. The way the thing is built is a lot like politics: bad compromise. and people trust their lives to this duct tape nightmare. Also, look at the average age of a NASA employee: 60 Space in the 60s was a young man's game. Now it is a old man's retirement program.
I am with the Libertarians; Space is not something government should be concerned with.
I am older, and was raised to always trust a policeman. As an adult, I rarely say this: My parents were wrong. The Republic is now an Empire.. with the centurions carrying assault rifles Rei Publicae Scutum no longer...
simple answer: It is an election year. more complex answer: its a STUPID election year and yes, 70% of those polled still think the internet is a bunch of pipes.
I would guess that the next election may be far more literate then this one with for the first time in US history an Informed Electorate. "Balanced" means controlled. Internet blogs and everything from IRC chat to texting or Twitter means intelligent people talking and not parroting the evening bookends on alphabet networks
an example today: New Orleans cops who shot and killed civilians. Dismissed.
as to "If you do it"; a while ago in Portland OR the Mayor and chief of police (now the new mayor) said it was ok to look through the trash of a person of interest so... a local paper looked through the MAYOR's trash and published the results. Sure were a lot of wine bottles.....

Honestly; would ANYONE want to cuddle a meadow vole?
Too much time, large research grant on their hands...
I am sure it was the gay space aliens under comander Elvis what done it. Oh, and superglue took care of MY pot thank you!
