    I can only speak for myself but I would rather stop earning money far below the billionaire mark. At the point where I wouldn't know what to do with more money. And I would never "earn" that kind of money (the kind where I don't know what to do with it) the way Gates does with Microsoft.

    I don't see the OP mentioning the U.S. anywhere in that sentence. Typical U.S. citizen to assume everyone means U.S. Laws when talking about "our" laws.

    AFAIK they have only a few dozen bytes so tagging each information in might be a bit too much information to store on the card (as opposed to saying position x is information y).

    Flash for Website Navigation is bad because:
    - it renders your page inaccessible for blind,... people
    - people can't use their browsers comfort functions with Flash (like Open in new Window)
    - Flash is too dumb to distinguish between right mouse clicks and drags (like the ones used in mouse gestures), it opens a popup menu with lots of useless commands on right-click - Flash Animations and Intros annoy the shit out of your site users when they have to wait for them even though you have already seen them (slow down site usage which kills your userbase)
    - Flash Player is not available for all Browsers on all Operating Systems
    - Who says all your visitors want your page to look the same (Font, Font-Size,Sound,...)

    You should think a bit about all these points before you decide you really need to break compatibility and comfort just for a bit of eye-candy/bells and whistles.

    Simple. MS doesn't want Linux Users to help their stupid Windows User neighbourhood/relatives. They want Linux Users to convert all people they know to Linux.

    Use a Linux-Live-CD or USB-Boot or even Floppy to boot a minimal Linux with Samba, NFS or whatever fits your Mac best and share the files with that. Switching is as easy as removing the CD from the Drive and rebooting.

    I don't think they would have any problems learning the Windows/Office combination should that really be necessary. However I don't think I can look far enough into the future to see what will be used in colleges then (Our German University has about a 4:1 Unix:Windows Ratio in the public student access computer rooms) and neither should you. Might be Windows, might be Linux, might be Mac OS or something totally different.

    What makes you think the database is CPU-bound instead of I/O-bound? And what makes you think the manufacturer of the two machines will allow this software patch instead of selling lots of expensive new systems?

    It is still faster for me than Firefox without any extension (on Gentoo Linux with default compile settings like the ones in the gentoo installation guide for firefox, opera binaries) And it presents a far saner UI to me than Firefox with all those extensions ever will. Think about that. I agree that a Mail- and IRC-Client are too much but leaving bits of basic functionality to be added only via plugins is not the solution either.

    Yeah, I am sure all the manufacturers selling "Broadcast-flag-free devices, get them now, before it is too late" with good success hate these constant changes in technology. As do the ones selling Broadcast-flag-enabled devices when there is a Broadcast-flag-2 which is incompatible to the first and allows them to sell another set of devices.

    I, as a European person, am sophisticated enough to see the difference between property and "licenses to steal other people's money" a.k.a. patents and because of this I don't want U.S. Software Patents happening to us. We might as well get rid of Patents in general while we are at it.

    It is funny seeing you all talking about wanting "an integrated desktop environment" or "eyecandy" a.k.a. "bells and whistles".

    All I want is getting the work done and a minimal windowmanager like ratpoison with zero configuration (other than the 1 line in xinitrc to enable it as windowmanager) seems to be exactly what lets me do that.

    Don't forget to run it from a known-good live-cd, otherwise it won't do you much good since it is just a script that uses several system programs.
