As the one central authority for Windows they could (theoretically; if they were more trustworthy and wanted to do The Right Thing (TM))
build a central Database of Windows Software with User Votes wether this Software installs some shit, on which Windows Versions it works,...
Fvwm might be a good choice. You can customize it for ages and always have another thing to add to your personal config. You can emulate the behaviour of almost any other WM out there and AFAIK you can even use it as the WM for Gnome.
Don't live near rivers that tend to flood sometimes. Thats about as bad as it gets here in Germany but you can easily avoid it by staying away from those rivers.
You are right. There is no excuse because it is not an error there is nothing to excuse for. Command lines are a lot easier to support than GUIs as you can simply tell the user a few commands to type in instead of directing him across its screen. Same goes for text config files. And if you really want a GUI you can just use one of the twenty different ones out there for configuration of the same thing. But don't come complaining when you don't find any help on how to use the GUI because fewer people use it.
especially for the older programs. In Windows, you almost NEVER have to anymore. Double click setup.exe now, and it's cross compatible in most newer operating systems.
I tried some old Windows Games yesterday and most of the Installers crashed because of programmer assumptions that just weren't true anymore on Windows XP.
Concerning the Gaming I agree with you especially the debugging/error-reporting in Wine/Cedega could be better.
Non-Technical End Users please realize there are different User Types out there and not every Software has to be tailored to your needs. There is enough Software out there perfectly usable by Non-Technical End Users not willing to learn something about Computers and most of us Technical Users don't see the reason for changing all of our Software to fit your needs.
You don't have to be more skilled to use Unix than to use Windows. You just have to get more knowledge from Manuals, Tutorials and other Documentation since the system is less discoverable because discoverability and efficiency/productivity don't work well together.
I read the Gentoo forums regularly and I don't even see the usual "use search" comments there unless there are already 3+ threads dealing with the same issue on the same page of the forum. Even really dumb questions are answered politely and in the worst case you get no answer which usually means nobody who knows read your thread while it was on the first page of the forum.
First thing, most people in the world don't know how their computer works, they don't want to know. That's what geeks are for.
Thats perfectly fine if they get paid for helping you but if someone helps you voluntarily in their free time they can decide themselves what they expect you to do yourself before you come looking for help. Most people think they can just suck up the free time of the people who "know computers and stuff" without giving something in return and that is not okay. That is the reason why most geeks/nerds react the way they do.
I read your comment twice to make sure I hadn't overread some irony or sarcasm tags but you seem to be serious. No Game-Programming possible in Python? No remote management utilities in Unix?
You seem to be talking about different things that have the same names as the ones I know because I always thought Freshmeat had quite a lot of those Apps and Games you mention listed.
Why use Objects when you can use plain text and can pass information from EVERY app to EVERY other app instead of just the ones that are able to use the same objects.
And what should I care about mainstream apps? I want my apps to run, not the ones joe averager user needs but the ones I need and they run better on Linux than on the Mac because I am a console person and hate unnecessary eye-candy so why should I go out there and buy an expensive Mac?
As stated above, these are MY preferences, not anyone elses, so if someone needs/wants other things he might want to buy a Mac and I would say nothing against it as I expect no-one to say something against my preferences.
P.S.: I use X with Ratpoison as WM as Term-Multiplexer and for my Opera-Browser and Mplayer.
And this is bad in what way exactly. Some of use don't mind to learn a few things to use a powerful user interface instead of being stuck with the newbie-interface for the rest of our lives.

Who? The U.S. and Saudi Arabia?
Not to mention:
-tainting the human gene pool (by surviving while others die) with more genetic material of people who don't know when to run
John Hammond had one those Mini Elephants in Jurassic Park (the book) for his tour to get funding for the park.
Don't you mean "Washington DC was saved by patriotic Americans who guided the ICBM to the White House"?
You forgot the "Mac/Linux/... is the solution to all your problems" posts.
I just don't understand the people that don't move after it hit them the first time and they need a new house anyway.

No!
Microsoft==Hell!

The moment something so clearly user-space as a package-manager gets put into the kernel with Linus' knowing is the moment I switch to another OS.

Not to mention that it is pretty hard to do so with Windows on a hundred (or thousand) machines at a time without expensive additional software.
He married one of the female members of the X-Men?
Or one could say that killing a politician is for the good of society because it reduces the number of dollars wasted on voting campaigns.
I agree with you that it is not harmless but I would rather have 100 Software Pirates in my Neighbourhood than 100 Murderers or 100 Rapists,...

Not to mention the cost of Mac Hardware if they had their users bound like MS has (with the same market share)
