  2. Watercooling 'Mishap' on 10 Computer Mishaps · · Score: 4, Funny
My favouriate incident was when my druken friend decided to try and have a drink out of my watercooling setup.

After he pulled the pipe out of the pump I distinctly remember 'hearing' the sound of water hitting a fan followed by 'seeing' that the pump was pushing water upwards-straight into my graphics card fan which was very effectively 'flicking' water over the rest of the PC.

PCs are hard to break, and after 2 days drying out it worked fine.

NB: this happened three times and after the third time and the purchase of my x800 xt I moved back to fans

you do realise that in google if you have the gmail user id no.spam.for.haydn that messages sent to n.o.s.p.a.m.f.o.r.h.a.y.d.n@gmail.com will get to your inbox, in fact you can add dots wherever you like, then if a dot combination gets too much spam you can put a filter on it. This way you don't have to cycle so many accounts.

Some programs will aways need the PC, but for at least 80% of the general public I don't think they do. All they use their PC for is data processing at work or the Internet. Where I work, lots of things we used to do with Docs are moving into our Intranet.

Games are starting to move into Consoles, Email on-line, Word Documents on intranets or email, Music onto your ipod, Movies on to TV. What does the average user actually need a PC for?

Hell, I bought a laptop and hardly ever use my main pc anymore (except storage and games) and if the Internet was everywhere and the pipes fast enough i would happily put all my movies and music on-line and access them through my laptop or something smaller

  13. Windows? What about the PC! on Will AJAX Threaten Windows Desktop? · · Score: 3, Interesting
Maybe Thomas Watson's quote about there only being a market for 5 computers isn't so far off the ball.

If moving CPU cycles and storage on-line to big company's (compare how fast it takes to search all your emails in gmail and Microsoft outlook, and how much space is available and backed up), then i can see the demand for new, faster PCs for a lot of people to decline.

When that starts to happen, who needs the newest and latest OS, or even a PC anymore when you can do it on your WiMax enabled pda and opera.

Things like Ajax only help move this data off the PC on-line and reduce the need for both a OS and PC

I take it you were never 16 and worked in a supermarket.

but back to the point, advertisers could choose which 'mode' they are in, let people vote and if no-one is responding then pull the ad and save the money, show more ads if more people say they like it, or fuck em and show the same amount of ads no matter what they select.

I can imagine advertisers would go for this, and I reckon the public would prefer it as well. Seeing relevant ads that are informative can be a big plus, whereas seeing pointless ads is irritating
