well people still want personal transport and they still want typed words, its just that the technology of how these desires are reached has changed.

Also while people do want recordings, what the industry is trying to get us to buy is physical copies of the recordings. Technology has resulted in the physical copies being no longer needed and in some cases no longer wanted.

that is exactly how i felt. The game started strong, but it never changed. The side quests consisted of "kill this guy on level 12" kill him, hand it in, "kill this guy on level 15". the other side quest was "get some item on level 12" get it, hand it in, "get some item on level 15". I know basically all RPG quests are like that, but they try to mask it with story or something. The side quests in torchlight were literally like what I described.

I know its silly to compare but the bureaucracy of any infrastructure project in the UK is mad.

No one cries for horse buggy makers or tanners or typewriter makers. Some times, technology makes your business model completely obsolete. The best thing is to come up with a new one, either in a totally new industry or maybe adapt to the conditions the new technology has made. Trying to legislate against the new technology is bad for everyone as it holds up progress.

wait wait wait. lets analyse your facts here. while it can be said that china as a unified society might not be as old as some people think, we can look back at recorded history to see what we know.

Modern Chinese society is based on the Qin culture which dates back to at least 9th century BC. While this is not terribly old, the unification under the Qin emperor in 221BC wiped out all of the other cultures of the Chinese people which dated far further back. Unfortunately we can't know exactly how far back as the emperor destroyed all recorded knowledge from the other cultures.

As far as the language goes, there is a story that suggests written Chinese dates back as far as ~2500BC but we have no evidence of this. What we do have is actual written characters dating back to ~1200BC. The earliest Greek texts that we have date back to ~1400BC. So based on this evidence you could say Greek was earlier, but not by nearly as far as you suggest. You were correct in suggesting that other cultures developed writing around 2000 years earlier. The fact that current Chinese is not as old is a result of the cultural purge mentioned above.

As far as contemporary cultures are concerned, there are very few that can date back as far as 200BC.

The clearest screens and the best at reading open formats such as txt and PDF. I know /. is big on compatibility and openness so I thought I'd throw it out that at the moment Sony is the best. Sure you can get features like wifi and reading webpages on things like the kindle, but in terms of reading e-books, the Sony reader line is top notch

I do actually enjoy this conversation. It is enlightening on some weird level. I don't have an issue with the idea of using comparisons, but storeys for some reason doesn't sit well with me. Your point of 3 stories making no difference is a good one and I fully agree. In fact I'll go further and say that personally if you said 10 storeys I wouldn't be able to visualise much difference. going the other way, if the article said 20 storeys I'd likely imagine the same basic height (really tall). All I could see in my mind is a really tall thing. Your point about 3 stories not changing anything is true and further shows that storeys are a bad thing to compare with.

my rattling might be needless but how does it make me appear brainless? the black and white and bold print statement is also interesting. Even to be more pedantic I never said "that's wrong". The point was 18 or 15 or maybe even 10 can be right, which shows that it is silly to use storeys. And I have to disagree in that it does not give a good idea of how tall the rocket is.

The other issue is this is a technical website talking about a technical topic. It would be suitable and in fact preferred for it to talk using a technical language.

  15. Re:15-stories? on SpaceX Conducts First On-Pad Test-Fire of Falcon 9 · · Score: 1

the point is that there is a lot of variability on storeys. I understand there is an "average" storey height. But then you have to define mean or median. the median might very well be 10 ft but the mean will definitely be more than 10ft, likely closer to 12 ft seeing as most high rises have 12ft or more ceilings.

Also the article didn't say "15 average storeys tall", it said "15 storeys tall". I know this sounds pedantic but storey as a height unit is really bad. All it gives is a rough idea that it is really tall. According to wikipedia the height is 54m. Now 54m is more specific, I know how tall it is and it only used 3 characters.

Along comes apple computers and they struck a deal, signed and everything, as long as apple computers stays out of the music game its all good. This is pretty much standard for trademarks, the idea is that if anyone hears the name apple associated with music they will think of The Beatles. for pretty much any trademark the rules are stay out of the same market and you can use the same name. All good so far. Then apple computers starts selling ipods and itunes, hey wait a sec they said they weren't going to do that. This is why the beatles sued, and rightfully so.

seeing as they don't ask for name or SSN or any other way of identifying you, it doesn't help whether they already have it or not. They need some way of tying results to location. If they asked for your name and phone number they could run it through the database they already have to determine your address as it is publicly known. but I think asking for that info would be worse. So they do the easiest thing and ask for address. Then they have a really easy job of tying results to location and the information you provided on its own is pretty harmless.
