    I see the point you are making. I guess there are two principals here:

    1) The moral obligation of the individual to help others (in this case financially)

    2) Whether it's right to compell someone to do what you see as their "moral obligation".

    Libertarians would probably agree with the first, but not the second.

    Ok, so you've got a magnetic impeller inside as well as coiled wire to drive the impeller. Then you've got a big ass electromagnet outside... maybe this isn't such a good idea after all.

    The comparison really is not apt because movie stars are not celebrities due to wealth. The paparazzi would follow Cameron Diaz around even if she gave all her money away.

    True indeed. In my experience, most policy disagreements boil down to a single dogmatic principle. Your average "conservative" does not believe it is her moral obligation to help those in need and your average "liberal" does.

    I agree that moving through the class boundary is much easier now than ever before, but the offspring of the wealthy will always start much higher on the class ladder than the poor. Meanwhile, it's easier for them to kick faster climbers beneath them in the head.

    I don't necessarily agree with Apple's sentiment, but I think you're dead on. Apple has long been extremely careful with it's image as making things that "just work". That's why they were so opposed to third party hardware manufacturers way back when. Well, that and the money.

    Umm.. Some stuff already exists the moment it's needed. That stuff is called "supply" and is usually used to fill "demand". If I want a new laptop I can go to the store and buy one that they have on hand. But what if nobody makes laptops anymore? That's what the OP was getting at.

    I've always wondered why criminals don't just paint the tips of their real guns red. Well, of course sometimes the point is intimidation but it would give them a slightly better chance when confronted by law enforcement.
