I used to work as an outsourced IT support guy, and a lot of my customers with medical offices. A lot of them used EMR systems, and a lot of them were all proprietary, clunky, full of bugs and issues, and just general pains in my ass. Now, a system that forces uniform standards, would allow, for data to be easily transfered from a PCP to a specialist. However, the mere thought of implementing any of this, makes me very glad I'm no longer in that job as it would be an absolute nightmare.

My initial comment was a little tongue 'n cheeky, but I agree with you completely. No one really talks about how the piracy started, where initially it was just defending their fishing waters because no local government would do it for them. How their country is so war torn they have no recourse but to turn to piracy. Even look at how they capture for ransom rather than harm or kill, these people aren't doing it out of want, but rather need, combined with the fact that even a year of fishing might barely get them by, but a good capture can bring needed supplies to families back home.

This is great for a couple of reasons. First it gives troops on the ground better intel on what to watch for and where, doing a job of keeping them alive. But it also looks like it can help troops get a better understanding of the area. What are your poor areas prone to violence. Long gone are the days when you can shoot first and ask questions later. This sort of intel is a valuable step to understanding the people over there and maybe even working with them rather than working against them. I'm sure the vast majority of Iraqi's just want an end to the violence, and are willing to work with whomever will help them get the status quo back.

I'm all for cutting costs using an open source OS, but the problem with increasingly cheaper hardware is staying power. Yeah it might be all you need, but how long is it going to be around for. Of course the trade off is, is it cheaper to get short term cheap computers, or long term expensive computers. And, to top it all off, if we do switch to a disposable computing model will we having recycling programs in place to make sure we reuse the rare and valuable parts, and keep the really toxic parts out of landfills?
