I personally do not use XP and never will do. As a result, I do not expect the bandwidth I legitimately pay to use from my ISP to be affected by millions of people downloading Service Pack 2 from a peer-to-peer network.
Hmm, but it seems to me that they will take the same amount of bandwidth downloading it from MS's site.
But people consistently miss a fundamenetal point: the iTunes Music Store is a store, they sell products, and if they don't sell products you like, go shop somewhere else.
I think the main gripe is that Apple WON'T let other stores open that sell to iPod owners, which is a different gripe then the DRM...
Most other places charge about the same. Online seems the only place to get decent prices, and even then sometimes they aren't so good (don't forget S&H).
No, AM radio is a receive-only process. Straw argument.
Actually, no its not. The airwaves actually belong to the people to begin with. I believe there are rulings indicating that if something is broadcast, you have the right to receive it, which is why radar detectors are legal in alot of states. The spectrum that wifi acts in is also unlicensed, so you can broadcast without a license as well.
I don't agree with banning smoking completely. They have a right to, but I don't feel i should be subjected to something i don't want.
As far as no one forcing waitresses to work in bars, this is true. However its probably also true they can make alot more money in a bar then at the local denny's. I don't see why someone trying to make money with a set of skills should be forced into a situation that causes them damage simply b/c they wish to maximize their earnings. All workplaces should be relatively healthy to work in.
The rest of your post seems to deal with the fact that we restrict movies to those under 18, so why not restrict games? Well those age restrictions don't worry. Lots of kids smoke pot, drink and watch violent movies. I saw many R rated movies before i was 17, so did all of my friends, yet none of us have become violent crimials. I don't think we're the exception either. As i stated in another post, people influeced that much by a game or movie already have other problems, and its not the fault of the game makers, just like McDs didn't make you fat, you (not personally..) did by eating there too much and not excersing.
Another point people never seem to get; you don't suddenly wake up on your 18th bday much more responsible. Its different for everyone, so much so that i question having such hard and fast rules. I know alot of people in their 30s that are much less responsible then alot of 16 yr olds.
but the concern is that exposure to violence may make someone more likely to commit violent crimes. Correct?
yes, thats the concern, however there's no basis in reality for it. Simply look how many people play violent video games (millions i believe) vs. the number of people that commit violent crimes (a MUCH smaller number). None of the groups claiming the game CAUSE the violence ever address that fact.
Even if a VERY small minority MAY be influenced by the games, that doesn't mean we need to do anything at all. Indeed, any such person is probably already greatly disturbed. The kids wern't shot in columinbine b/c Doom made some kids violent, they got shot b/c they were bullying someone else to the point that person snapped.
Hmm...well you don't license a book (which is also covered by copyright) or music or movies...and this 'license' is including inside a box so that i can't read it until after i bought the game...so i'd say that the EULA is invalid (contracts MUST be presented at time of sale...i don't see how using something i now OWN can have me agree to a contact after the fact), and copyright does NOT give the software authors the right to install something hidden on mycomputer. I expect the game to install, not some crippleware.
A lease ALWAYS involved a time frame, BTW. You pay for what you use. If you stop paying, you lose access to the car. Buying software is much closer to BUYING a car, not leasing..
When someone smokes, it may cause damage to someone elses lungs which they do not want. In some situations, you can't avoid it (for example, in the winter when smokers are huddled around a door to enter a building). I don't want the damage to my lungs, but someone elses behavior is causing it, and i cannot prevent it. So we regulate where people may smoke.
But for video games, i choose to expose myself to the violence, but my actions do not expose someone else who wishes not to be exposed to it. Thats the key difference i think.
What makes you think they wouldn't? And what makes you think your name / print didn't end up on a list by accident? They were wrong about Iraq having WMD, i don't doubt that they can fuck up a list. Its already been done in the past, if i recall.
First, what I wrote was a joke. My point was that saying shit like "I hope you die a slow and painful death," while probably not to be taken literally, shows you feel a lot of anger and resentment in your life at something. Take a chill pill.
Just a wild guess, but maybe the anger and resentment is directed to said lazy parents that are making things that, as an adult, he should be able to do, difficult or imposible.
nd if people in general are safer with airbags, how come my insurance premiums didn't go down when I got a car with airbags? Wouldn't I have seen that extra insurance savings if the government hadn't interfered and, given the choice, I selected a car with airbags?
Um, why would insurance companies ask if you have them or not if it didn't affect your rate?
Um, why does it matter if its on or off by default? There was such a big stink raised about it that everyone knows its there, if you want it, YOU turn it on..its not really that hard..
Onboard sound sucks for the same reasons as onboard video; the CPU gets too busy, the sound STOPS (on my brandnew laptop its doing just that now), and you get noise from transistors or capasitors near the sound chip.
I hate what creative did too, but this move by id will probably make the game run better, since the sound processing will be moved from the CPU to the sound card, leaving more CPU time for the physics engine.
It's usually faster to mix sound in software than to do it in hardware because of the latencies involved in transferring samples over the PCI bus and changing the state of the mixing/processing hardware.
Really, you know this how? Somehow i think you're talking out your ass...and don't forget there could be an over all performance gain even if thats true, just b/c the CPU has more time to do other things then process sound.
My credit union explained to me that its cheaper for them when I use the CC network as opposed to the debit one. Don't know why, but that's what they told me.
From my perspective: The divestiture and breakup of the Bell System was utterly unnecessary, along the lines of using an antiaircraft gun to kill mosquitoes.
Yup, poor mabell. Nevermind that there has been alot of innovation since the split, and prices keep going up!
People that tell me that say 'I used to pay just $35/month for everything.' Never do they adjust for inflation: $35 in '75 would be $124.78 in '03. See for yourself http://www.westegg.com/inflation/

Look at the growth we had in the 90's, to which Clinton applied a poor policy that helped in the short run (blowing the bubble), but killed us in the early 2000's (pop!).
I've always found this fasinating. When a democrat is in office, the next term (if republican) feels the effects of his poor decisions b/c it takes time for changes to take effect, but when Bush gives tax cuts to the wealthy, the economy reacts immedately.
So shouldn't any current improvements in the economy be actually due to clinton, b/c it takes time?
And the bank gets the money to pay the interest by loaning the money out.
And the money goes out in the form of business loans, home loans, car loans, personal loans, lines of credit and so forth.
You're assuming that because the bank has the money to loan, that people will come to borrow it.
Actually has anyone ever been told by a bank they can't borrow money because the bank doesn't have enough to loan? I'm willing to bet people are turned down for other reasons, I don't recall ever hearing 'the bank doesn't have the money to loan you.'
Except that the summary seems to suggest they were only looking at business computers to begin with, not home uesrs at all. Maybe RTFS next time...

Most DVDs currently are in the $25 or less range
Funny, the FYE where i live seems to have most DVDs in the $23 - $28 range. Very few under that.
Don't like the oversight? Don't use the free system.
Sorry, i thought libraries were supposed to exist to promote a free exchange of ideas, not censor them.

The point is you can't discriminate based on race if you are unaware of someones race.
Well, there's no race field, but someone might pick John Doe over Abdul Mohamed.
Actually the number of R rated movies has begun to decline since they first adopted a rating system. So, i'd say that it does have an effect.

I have 3 insured cars, 71 impala, 92 lumina and a 95 geo, and my total insurance for my wife and I is $72 a month.
Um, your newest car is 10 years old... thats why your rates are so low.
I did that...for the amount my 10 yr old car spent broken down, it was cheaper / more predicable to get a new car.
First, what I wrote was a joke. My point was that saying shit like "I hope you die a slow and painful death," while probably not to be taken literally, shows you feel a lot of anger and resentment in your life at something. Take a chill pill.
