    with XP there is time syncing

    Ok, the other stuff going on here is one thing...but using NTP to sync your clock to a more accurate source? Thats being just a little paranoid.. especially when you can tell it the time server to use.

    I'm actually going ot have a linux box run an NTP server, and have all my other machines sync to it. Thats one feature i like having in xp.

    So the solution would be that negative feedback resets the person to 0 instantly.

    You cannot guarantee the integrity of Linux, thus is would be illegal to ship hardware that will allow it to run.

    You're right; closed source OSes don't have security holes, or programs like fake cd. There'd be no way you could compromise the integrity of Windows for example.

    Lets be real here, Linux won't be illegal b/c its open source, b/c the existance of programs like fake cd prove taht you can do the same things with a closed source OS.

    If you're unconscious, and the ER tech can just scan off you that you're diabetic and allergic to penicillin, that's a Good Thing.

    I have a friend alergic to certain kinds of nuts. He wears a metal braclet 24/7, ensures that its tight and never takes it off. Its also very unlikely to be easily broken. Seems to work fine, and perform the same function. Why do we need a chip implanted in our body, that WILL be abused once it becomes popular.

    Sure they choose it. Either you accept whats going on in your life, and try to change it if possible, or you don't. If you don't, thats usually when pepole b/c 'depressed.' I don't buy this BS that is a chemical inbalance (people being depressed causes the imbalance, not the other way around). You said it yourself, you choose how to deal with it. If you can choose that, then you can choose not to be depressed too. BUt most of the time people would rather wallow in self pity so that people feel sorry for them and get some attention.

    Everything is cause and effect, i dont think the game made him kill himself, but maybe social interaction from within the game made him kill himself.

    Or maybe he was just a nutcase. I've been in love, and dumped, but never thought about killing myself b/c of it.

    He probably, like many people, never learned self control, and never learned how to appreciate what he had. Instead he chose to be depressed, and whine about all the things he didn't like in his life.

    You'll still need to spend money on an ISP anyway...so again why bother? You already have an email that you're paying for, so why even spend 20/year to get another?

    1) That may be the case, but in some areas thats the only option.

    2) The ISPs i have didn't seem in any danger of going out of business. In fact they seems to be growing. Changing emails isn't the terrible struggle you seem to think it is. I had to recently b/c of the @home failure. I sent one email to everyone that need to know, and said this is my new email, update yor address books. That seems to have taken care of it, as no one complained i couldn't be mailed anymore.

    3) Right...i'm sure lots of users know how to create a basic web page, let alone use 'dynamic content.' When i last had dialup (only 2 months ago), i had 8MG of space. Comcast gives you 25MB. And by dynamic content do you mean 'i can open a connection to a database for my content', or do you mean some annoying ads that people see when they visit my page?

    "So AOL, maker of a fine corporate email system, you run Exchange? Why is that? Doesn't your software work?"

    That can be answered by a) 'Our mail system is intended for home, not business use' or b) 'We have full confidence in it, but there's a system workign in place already, and there are no benefits to be gained by spending the money to switch.'

    And as was also pointed out, $20/yr isn't *that* bad.

    why pay yahoo 20/month for only pop3 forwarding when you can get dialup + email + webspace for the same price..

    Sounds to me like they are taking someone elses book, changing the names of all the characters and places (leaving the other words exactly as they were written), then including it as a part of a larger book, maybe writing the beginning and ending...with the original book in the middle...

    At my college, it was UNIX only in the CS program. You didn't touch a pc unless you were 1) taking some IT courses or 2) taking OS 2, where you write your own os.

    Actually no, that seems to fall under 'derivitive work.' (Forgive my spelling, its been a long day). If they took it verbatum (or almost verbatum), there's a problem. But that site seems to be a summary of /. which i'm willing to bet is allowed. If i wanted to, i could write my own movie reviews and publish them. Usualy movie reviews would be summaries of the films they review.

    Thats kind of a sweeping statement. I'm sure there are people that do care if its legal or not, and respect it. In fact, i'm willing to bet most do respect copyright, BUT, don't like having their rights of fair use being taken away. Where and how one watches a DVD, making a backup of it, and copyright actually stifling new works. but maybe i'm too optimistic.

    Somehow i doubt the terms of the EULA are enforcable. Reverse engeneering of the protocol would be allowed. I don't think that just b/c its in the agreement that means it is legal.

    And if they are, then perhas they have lost the ability to use the program (i imagine only the beta, since i don't think that you can say not only this item, but any similar ones you buy from us).

    Because its their software..No one should have the right to try and emulate something without the express written (noterized) legal consent the party?

    Um, that developers DO have that very right. And its not only in the software field. Imagine if auto parts makers couldn't legally reverse engineer a car battery for example. You'd have one brand of battery for your car, supplied only by the oem. They aren't violating copyrights b/c they haven't taken any graphics, text, code, etc from blizzard. It works remarkably similar to battle net, but its not the same, and probably does function differently under the hood.

    Thats legal too. Take romance books for instance. They all have basically the same plot, only a few minor details are different. Thats perfectly legal, b/c copyright doesn't prevent it. Its the same way with software (think MS Money and Quicken).

    Unfortunately, in our imperfect society where criminals ignore the law and have guns too, it makes unarmed law-abiding citizens less safe.

    The logical conclusion would be that since we can never prevent criminals from having guns, then all people should have them.

    No, you should not. First off, your children should have to make thier own way in the world. While its a nice thought to provide for them, i think that people are better off providing for themselves.

    Second, copywrites should expire just for that reason. You'll be forced to write another great novel to feed yourself. And then later another. You continue to live off your talent, and in the end we have a library of great works, not just one
