  1. Re:Monetary Issue on Busted for (L0pht)Crack Possession · · Score: 2

I believe this was answered above, but I'll give it a go.

Last summer one of our users RH boxes was broken into and basically used for a pirate games repository over the weekend. I was notified Monday for by our ISP of a 5000% increase in our traffic over the weeken (gee, thanks guys, could have called me saturday). It took me 6 hours to figure out what happened plus another 24-36 to fix the problem and seal the security hole. During this time period I was unable to do other tasks around here. I don't make nearly close to what the person in the other message posted, but we lost a few grand in my time when I could have been doing jobs for customers. Plus you end up behind schedule and you have to makeup the time you lost either threw overtime (if you get it) or by sacrificing other tasks. From that one litle break in it took me close to a week to catch-up and get back to where I'd been. Sounds confusing, but business is confusing.

I never realized how much I was working until the HR department called down the other day to my boss to ask how it was possible I was turning in 10-20 hours of overtime every paycheck. To be honest I never really think about it. Once I get going on something I usually don't stop until I've got it figured out. I bought a watch, but never use it. None of my computer clock are even remotely close to having the same time. To this "Knowledge Worker" let the weanies in HR worry about overtime and people working to much, that's their job, not mine.

I agree completely with you on Wine. I'll never forget the first time I got it compiled and working (few years ago) and got Solitare to work. I love that feeling when dealing with Linux. I may not have written Wine, but the hours spent setting it up were rewarding. That was what got me hooked on Linux in the first place.

In my opinion, we (the us) could be invaded, but unless somebody nuked us into submission, I don't think any one or two countries could take and hold the US. Think of every gang in most major cities that has better weaponry than most third-world armies. An invading force could maybe get to the Rockies, but every yahoo for North Dakota to Georgia would be saying "Ma, get me my gun" and that would be the end of any invading force. Look at how many Americans died to protect their country during the Civil War and that was with brother's fighting against brothers. Imagine brothers fighting with each other against some country who had the balls to come and invade their city. To many people with guns that know how to use them in the US.

  13. Patch Repository on PCWeek Summarizes hackpcweek.com Test · · Score: 1

Here is the thing that irritates me about this article. The statement about no central repository for updates. What about Red Hat's errata section, how about Freshmeat and Linux Today?

I have also spent the last two days trying to download Service Pack 5 for NT. Sure Microsoft has a "central repository", but you are stuck with a 25-75mb file to download and Microsoft's site by itself is slow without having to try to download from Conxion. The farthest I've gotten is 10mb before the connection hung and I cancelled. We have 6 channels of a T1 here, and I'm only getting 3.2kb to Microsoft and on the download.

I think it it pretty obvious from the last two-three weeks that PC Week has done little or no research on anything they are trying to do or write about. It is my personal opinion that we should just ignore them. If they aren't going to take the time to research their articles and statements (think Journalistic Integrity) I'm not going to take the time to read their magazine.

All of these contests are designed for Linux to lose. Although PC Week has been expanding their coverage of Linux, what is PC Week? It is a magazine oriented towards Windows users. Look through their ads. 99% of their ad revenue are for products for Windows.

The way I see it, there is no real way to test the two operating systems against each other. Somebody will always find something wrong with the test criteria, someone else will scream conspiracy and the whole thing starts over again. Who cares if Linux got hacked first. It doesn't matter. I use Linux because I enjoy it, not because it is "hack-proof". I find it easier to get the things done that I do.

There is no such thing as a 100% secure server. Somebody is always going to find a way to get in. These tests are designed to convince corporate big shots to use one or the other. Its going to come down to CIOs actually listening to what their Sys Admins real world tests showed for their business, not somebody elses. Your business and systems are completely different than mine. I'm not going to use NT or Linux just because it works for you.

This is not intended as flamebait. I'm just tired of this. It's like all of the sudden Linux and NT need to be on the cover of Consumer Products magazine or something.
