It seems to me that we are trapped in an old way of thinking without even realizing it.
Why do we follow a spacial model for storing things when we don't need to? Have we asked ourselves the question: "Is it beneficial that we have to remember a location for each file?" Perhaps it is. As humans we have become very good at remembering where things are for later recall. However, for storing media, it makes little sense. A traditional file system with nested directories allows you to organize files, but no matter how clever your directory structure, some files will defy your organizational model.
With iTunes-like media interfaces we are moving away from location-based recall to CONTENT based recall. Unfortunatly ID3 tags are overly limiting, but it feels like a step in the right direction (at least for media files). Could this be a the right direction for the rest of our file system? Content based recall instead of an imposed location based recall?
The thing I find most iritating on windows and linux is the lack of standard uninstall. I know there is one for windows, but it is not always followed, and even when it is, it rarely actually removes everything that the install program installed. I think this is the main reason that it has become standard that windows machines get slower and slower until eventually you have to reinstall.
"Update #1, 7:35 pm PST: we're up on 'dirty' power for now (it works, but it's unreliable), and we're working to assess the state of the databases. The worst thing we could do right now is rush the site up in an unreliable state. We're checking all the hardware and data, making sure everything's consistent. Where it's not, we'll be restoring from recent backups and replaying all the changes since that time, to get to the current point in time, but in good shape. We'll be providing more technical details later, for those curious, on the power failure (when we learn more), the database details, and the recovery process. For now, please be patient. We'll be working all weekend on this if we have to."
I got no pop acess. Infact my "mail settings" look quite different than the ones in the instructions on how to set up pop.
I hope it works for me soon.
I have many friends who are of the opinon that its only a matter of time before China takes over the world. I find it hard to believe that such things could be practiced by a world controlling country, but I guess they already are. Living in the US, its so easy to forget that more people live in China thatn the US. And that these things are an everyday experiance for these people. We live in frightening times.

Yeah, -1 overrated
Yeah, some of my best freinds are men who stick it to the man. They often come round for dinner.

And yes, I can't handle my html. :(
My school uses this number for everything! The worst was when the residents on my floor were invited to a special dinner. If you wanted to go to the dinnner you had to sign up on a list posted in the hall with your full name and SSN. I guess they needed it to deduct a meal from your meal plan, but JEEZ! The worst part was how many students signed up without thinking.
"Just say 'cancel'"

I am VERY interested in a gmail invite. captbaritone at d-res dot com
Agreed. it would need to be built into all common comunication dvices and softwares as the default.
Well, too bad for Uncle Sam I am gonna use my PGP all day long!
What if we band together and all do it? If encryption were the default, not the exception, perhaps we could all be safe(er).
I use PGP for sensitve information. I hear it would be pretty difficult for even the stongest computers to crack. Am I wrong?
