Back when Ricochet was around, I would go into local pubs in Atlanta on trivia nights, the would offer something like $20 certificates or more for the winner of the contest. With Ricochet (192kbps wireless internet), a PDA, and Google, I could walk in late - get a perfect score on the questions I answered and eat and drink free.
Ricochet was around $70 amonth, but at 20-60 bucks a week it more than paid for itself. Best thing, there were no rules that said you couldn't access the internet. People were amazed at my trivia knowledge.
Microsoft has killed its Next-Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB) project
The'll just insert a coupon with Longhorn saying that users will get the Free Security upgrade when Half Life 2 ships, or when someone believes the 'free beer - tomorrow" sign, whichever comes first
Like they ever had a security project in the first place
this book can be used to round out that knowledge and find weak areas.
I have no weak areas, I just run Windows XP, with no security patches, no antivirus, no firewalls, on a wireless lan with no WEP or WAP, Broadcast SSID turned ON, the password for Administrator is administrator. and everything us shared and accessible by the everyone group.
it is so wide open, all the hackers think it is a honeypot and just leave it alone. now that's security.
04.05.04 - The Associated press reports that Microsoft has just been granted an Agricultural Patent, yes thats AGRICULTURAL.
You may ask how in the hell they managed this one, but it seems they have devised a novel way to herd Worms. They just set boxes of Windows out in the fields, and the worms just keep rollin in. AMAZING. Wormherders everywhere are jumping for joy.
Even master wormhered Paul Maud'dib had to give them credit.
Sony does make Good TV's and DVD players, however, that's the extent to which I like there products. Anything that is just proprietary BS, I just leave alone - hopefully this won't creep into the TV DVD market, though I hear they are making TV's that use memory sticks.
I Scanned the article and read John Doerr . ..investing $12 million in LinuxCare..
As some may now Bill Gates invests in companies like John Deere. I thought, "so that's how he's gonna get in, through the back door". Then I RTFA and said Whew!
They play that damn Nelly and Chingy to much, when something like DEER reads as DERR and vice versa.
Anyway The university education system is healthy, is nonsense. Sure you have many good schools out there, but you have many more universities that are nothing more than 'High School 2'. Many people graduate from these thinking there so educated, only to find out that their degree aint worth much.
I'd say there are four things. Education is probably the most important -- and I'd further refine it to K-12. The university education system is healthy
While I agree education is far more important than outsourcing, this may miss the point. While education generall is a sure fire way to make a decent living (I'm not talking about rap stars or ball players here), some people can't afford (or don't have access to) quality education.
If jobs in the US become solely comprised of Uber Brain power jobs, wherby the only decent pay is in those areas - what happens to everyone else. Do we ship the people who can't compete in the educational arena overseas? Do we make them all take minimum wage jobs?
I believe in survival of the fittest and all, but if we outsource everything because of cheap labor, we will increase the gap & the contrast between the wealthiest and poorest. When those areas become too saturated, you have an unsustainable situation.
I certainly don't have the answer to any of this, I wish somebody did.
People who are not weary of RFID always point to things such as
it decreases the cost
I can throw the packaging away
it's in the package / tag - not on the customer
Sure that's valid right now, but how about the cost decreasing benefits of NO packaging. Gilette Razor blades for instance, packaged in a big box so they are harder to steal.
They can sell the idea of embedded chips, by saying it decreases packaging costs (which it will). Then, you can't throw it away.
Further, if anyone has noticed, ANY media which can be used as advertising IS used as advertising. From buses, The Internet, to the damn program Guide on your Cable Box, even the products in Movies. How long before RFID is used for that as well, once they have sold the idea of embedded chips.
Automated Computer: Good morning shopper, I see the pack of ultra ribbed, extra small condoms in your pocket is about to expire, and you only have one left - you can find another on aisle 20.

from what I've heard (on CNBC and elsewhere), Google is also considering making (at least a small portion) of it's shares available through an Internet based "Dutch Auction".
This, of course, has some Underwriters worried, given that a fee in the range of 5% could yeild over 100 million dollars for an IPO such as google.
Many believe, however, that this will not indicate a trend due to the fact that this may be easy for google, because they are allready a household name. In most other cases, an auction will not be so easy.
HERE is the link.

DRM and proprietary memory stick, that just doubles my reasons not to subscribe to it.
Now I can play quake at 10,000,000,000 frames per second!

these are some very valid points, and contain some of the reasons why I'm considering NOT buying google, at least until the share prices stabilize.
lets hope the portions of the net we can't access, can't go down so easily - like .mil for instances or the arpanet (if it is still called that)
