Why is it that things like this never seem to work out? Zero cost perfect performance. Say it works, then who is going to jump all over it and try to make some sort of claim to get rich? Or say that this system goes nuts and causes more spam than we ever thought possible? Maybe I'm just getting pessimistic, or maybe i've learned a thing or two over the years but it usually seems that when something comes along claiming to be the end all great solution it turns out to be the biggest problem yet.
The problem here was this program claimed to be so amazingly user friendly that it was hard for anyone to turn down. I know a couple people that swore by it due to its ease of use. Granted that other solutions out there aren't difficult to use either, but we are talking about the masses of non-techies out there.
Here's a comparison for you, you buy your TV and say that you get cable or sat tv, you get the subscription level that you pay for. You can't legally deem that your payment is suddenly worth a few extra channels and hack the cable/sat network. It's still theft and against the law. The same logic applies to cable modems. Sure, you may own the modem, but you don't get to control how fast it can go unless you give the cable co. some more money for the next tier of service.
Not only is it a violation of the TOS on most cable ISP's, it's a violation of FCC law. So think again if you're wanting to hack or uncap your cable modem.
Yahoo wants to find a solution to stop spam? Stop offering free e-mail accounts. Half of the spam I get comes from yahoo, the other half is from Hotmail.
Maybe if they would charge a dollar or two a month and make it an even better service such a problem wouldn't exist with them.
"complete" yet added 100,000 articles last year, and planning on adding another 300,000 before the press release... doesn't sound very complete to me. Oh wait, maybe they're going by Microsoft's completion standards.
"online dissent and distribution of censored information continues and even influences government policies."
Isn't that what the internet is for? To be able to discuss censored topics/information? I don't see how this is too much different than here in the states. There is all kinds of material that is censored from television and radio that makes it to the net. Seems like everything is working out to me.
Am I the only one that thinks transmitting commands in the middle of a storm to a half billion dollar computer millions of miles away isn't a good idea?
"If I can go to almost any bank machine in the world and be able to use it without needing to sign up for a new account, why can't I do the same with hot spots?"
Well you're comparing public and private and wired and wireless networks, Apples and Oranges.
Banks use a private network between each other to communicate transactions and when you use the competitors ATM you get charged a service fee. Part of that goes towards using that private network.
And from a buisness sense, it wouldnt be all that great to have your customers wandering around on other's networks yet you're still responsible for whatever they're doing.
AOL can blatantly "hack" into a users computer like this and make significant changes to settings and nothing happens. But a teenager does some simple hex editing and creates a variant of blaster and gets prosecuted to hell.. Something seems wrong here.
Hey you weren't supposed to tell anyone that I wasn't actually comming in every Friday... Crap now I have to find a new way not to go to work on Fridays.
Now I'll be getting spam on penis reconstruction done fiber at a time with nano fibers....
Wait... thats not such a bad idea..
Where do I sign up?

"Perhaps Wolfram is giving back to the scientific community; perhaps it is simply clever marketing for a framework that is beginning to gain momentum.
Perhaps he's trying to make himself look like less of an asshole.
"Life itself feels like a massively multiplayer game."
WOW.. Someone has played way to much Everquest or Sims:Livin Large.
For the short time that it was available on download.com it was freeware.

Just a thought.

I'm a little short on cash to switch to a non-free alternative.. What if I try running a toaster instead of Linux, can I still get that payout?
