I'd like for someone to show me how Firefox and Thunderbird are "better" than Mozilla/SeaMonkey.
Things I've observed...
Mozilla and Firefox take the same amount of time to start, they render at the same speed as well, and in no way is Mozilla sluggish when compared to Firefox.
I have yet to see how Firefox has a "smaller footprint". On my system Firefox seems to use more memory when loading the exact same pages as Mozilla.
So if Firefox isn't faster, isn't "smaller", etc.. Then how is it better?
And I only use the suite as a browser. I don't use it for email, irc, etc... Although sometimes I will use Composer for a quick and dirty web page.
As for the UI. The default themes that ship with Mozilla/Seamonkey are just horrid! However, there are MANY third party themes that look great. I use the pinball theme here. Mozilla looks grea with it!
Sure Mozilla doesn't have the customizable menus that Firefox does. but I've never found that to be an issue?
I'm quite happy with Mozilla how it is.
Also... Mozilla is/was by no means a "failure". When Mozilla announced they were "dumping" Mozilla, they said that the number of users was in the "low millions".
I don't know about you, but an OSS app that has a few million users is a pretty good success!! And it definitely deserves to live on. Which is why the SeaMonkey project was started.
There's still a demand for Mozilla and quite a large user base.
I personally think Mozilla would have done just as well as Firefox if MoFo had put the same level of advertising into Mozilla as it did Firefox.
I've been a supporter of Mozilla for years now, and I continue to test SeaMonkey nightlies and submit bug reports.
But yes... They could have come up with a better name than SeaMonkey.;) lol
Oh lord, not another ARES whacker! You guys really need to chill. Just because you're a badass EC, it doesn't make you the "expert" of all things radio.
"But providing a communications channel without professional guidance as to content and application could just as easily cause more harm then good."
hmmmmm... You know there's lots of those around. The telephone, the internet, and even "gasp" amateur radio!
They should probably ban those in there too eh? Especially all of that amateur radio equipment that's probably being used to incite riots and stuff eh?
Oh wait... Most of my fellow hams seem to have voted for Bush. So I guess you guys are okay eh?
Well then, we'll just ban everything else! Let's take their cell phones away at gun point!
I don't think it's news. Big deal... They put it on a USB flash drive.
Is it just me, or has Tom's Hardware been "dumbed down" since they got that new editor guy? I haven't been able to find a decent article on the site since! And I used to read it like daily!
Nope! You're the only one. I still use the Mozilla Suite. I hate Firefox. lol
But yeah... They've offcially abandoned the suite, no more new builds. However, the suit is still being developed by the Seamonkey group. Check it out!
And I use Opera here as well. It's a great little browser! Quite useful! I really like the password wand thingie. It can remember multiple user names for the same site.
I've been a licensed user for years now, but thanks to this free key offer, now I can run Opera on a couple of my other computers legally and I picked up a couple for the family too.;)
You don't actually need flash, sure some sites are all flash based, but hey, that's their problem!
I don't run flash here. It's actually quite nice. I don't have to be bothered by those annoying flash based ads.
If someone is stupid enough to put so much flash material into their site so that it's unusable without a flash plug-in, then that's their problem. I personally avoid sites like that.
Exactly! It is crap. It's a dead end technology. As cable modem and other technologies get faster, BPL will be stuck. You can only stuff so much data down a wire that was designed for power transmission.
So why should we harm users of the HF spectrum in the mean time? It doesn't make sense to go to all that trouble to support a dead end technology.
HF is far more useful than BPL. Not just for ham radio operators. Hams are just one of MANY users of the HF spectrum.
International flights use HF to keep in touch with distant traffic control centres, ships use HF, as does the military and various other services. Not to mention shortwave broadcasting.
HF is also very valuable due to its propagation. it's the only region of spectrum which can be used to communicate over great distances, even worldwide!(Without relays or satellites!)
BPL is garbage, it's going nowhere. It's just a lame ass short term solution that the power companies are pushing because they want to make a buck off it.
Ah yes... However music isn't like food. You don't need music, and they also "give away" music for free on the radio.
A lot of people have a difficult time accpting that buying this music on CD has to cost so much!
And usually you're only paying for one or two "hit songs" and the rest of the tracks are crap. I know I stopped buying CDs because I ended up with a CD collection in which I'd have to switch CDs after two or three songs.
Bascially their product is crap and overpriced. Yet they can't seem to understand why people refuse to pay them for it? lol
Same here! And I'm a DOS geek from way back. I still insist on making DOS apps run on XP.;)
Although sadly I've killed off DOS over here. Unless you count DOS 6.22 running under dosemu or DOS VDMs in OS/2.
But this is definitely news to me. The first I've heard of it. lol
These people at CNN really need to get one of those education things! The Internet did NOT "crash". There's just been a disruption in service due to the loss of an undersea cable. That's not a crash, it's a bloody disruption!
The headline should be: Internet access disrupted in Pakistan
It's nice that you're able to get all of your software via FTP. But some things just aren't available via FTP anymore. A lot of people have figured out it's cheaper to use bittorrent. In the past several months I've downloaded quite a few open source apps and operating systems via bittorrent.
Bittorrnt is also becoming popular for other purposes as well. There's free vidio and audio programs that are widely distributed via bitorrent now as well.
So bittorrent has a LOT of legal uses.
and yeah... We do use it to download the odd copy of Longhorn and OS X Tiger for Intel. But hey, where else are going to get those from eh?;)
I just have Mozilla, Opera, Firefox, etc.. nuke all of my cookies when I close the browser. I mean, it's not really a hassle to have to login everywhere. (That way I end up remembering my passwords.;) )
I don't own a DVR and really I'm not in the market for one. I record all of my shows to watch later for free! I've been using the same darn tape for five years now. The quality is still good enough.
I do own a DVD player, but I find I barely use the thing! My VCR gets a lot more use. Of course I don't watch a lot of movies. I rarely bought movies on VHS and the same holds true with DVD. I just don't buy movies.
The VCR is a still a very useful device! And I'm sure it'll remain popular until the HDTV switch happens.
Yup! There's definitely something wrong if Word is taking 30 seconds to launch! That's insane! Word launches a LOT faster than Firefox on my system! lol
I don't know how his article ever made it on Slashdot. What a load of crap.
I'd use Open Office, but it takes three years for the apps to load! That's my biggest gripe with it.
Of course the guy ditched Outlook for Thunderbird. So what can we expect from someone like that eh? lol
Exactly! And for the people who are too stupid to do even that, you can get "autostreamer" from Neowin. It does all the "hard" work for stupid people who can't figure out how to slipstream...
Exactly! This claim of addiction is insane. When I'm home with nothing to do, I check my email quite often. But when I'm not here, I could really care less. When I was on vacation a couple weeks ago I didn't check my email all week, and did it bother me? Nope...
It's not Microsoft's fault. It's the user's fault. You actually have to click on the link, download the virus and run it. How can you blame Microsoft for that?
It's not their fault people are idiots. You can't protect people from their own stupidity.
I mean, how many times do we have to tell people to not click on links, download crap, and run it??
See, and it sounded like a big deal! lol is that all? Then I don't see what the big fuss is about. How stupid are people?
You can tell them a million times to not click on something, yet they still will. Then they'll bitch and moan about how their computer is infected with a virus, spyware, etc..
People like that drive me crazy! I know I surely don't feel sorry for them.
I tell my family all the time, don't click on shit!!! But do they ever listen? nope...
The internet is only a dangerous place because it's filled with people who don't know any better! If you're going to use something, at least know what the hell you're doing. Is that too much to ask of people??
I'm quite shocked by this! It's insane!! 3.28 euros per gig?? These people obviously don't have a clue as to what that means. They figured it sounded good, so they did it.
What I want to know is, how could this have happened in Europe?? You'd think they'd be more liberal and progressive there?
But it looks like they're sucking up to big business just as much as the politicians here in the states do! You have to wonder whose pocket they're in eh!
The Netherlands is definitely different. You can smoke weed there, get a prostitute, but you have to pay insane taxes on your iPod??
That's the thing. They aren't "better" versions.
;) lol

Where exactly will these violations occur? Can I be violated in Soviet Russia by a hot Russian chick named Olga?? Can I??? Can I?? Pleaseeeeeee!!!!
"which is quite a bit faster than most end-user 5400rpm hard drives"
huh?? Do they even sell those things for desktops anymore? The last time I bought a 5400rpm desktop drive was 1999!!!
I sure hope they're not shipping that slow ass crap on a modern system!
I don't think it's news. Big deal... They put it on a USB flash drive.

Same browser, just a different name.
And I use Opera here as well. It's a great little browser! Quite useful! I really like the password wand thingie. It can remember multiple user names for the same site.
I've been a licensed user for years now, but thanks to this free key offer, now I can run Opera on a couple of my other computers legally and I picked up a couple for the family too.

That's just poor web design in my opinion.

I actually got a good deal one time on 50 CD-R "music" Maxell's with the slim CD cases. Like $16 at Sam's Club! I used most of them for data. lol
That was the only time I bought "music" CD-Rs.
Ah yes... However music isn't like food. You don't need music, and they also "give away" music for free on the radio.

I go one better... I don't even bother installing the flash plugin!
I think we should try to save the cassette!! We'll need them when all of our computers have Intel and M$ DRM technology inside.
We can teach these kids how to copy their friend's tapes using a strange and ancient piracy device usually referred to as a "dual cassette deck".
And they'll also need to learn the fine art of recording music off the radio. (Yes kids, that really is possible!)
Best of all... The RIAA is going to find it rather difficult to track our piracy activities and sue us!
Cassette tapes. The future of music sharing!
Exactly my thoughts on the matter!
I don't own a DVR and really I'm not in the market for one. I record all of my shows to watch later for free! I've been using the same darn tape for five years now. The quality is still good enough.

actually if you mod the setupp.ini file and tell it it's a volume license copy of Win2k, it won't even ask you for a product key!!
