    There's a difference between asking for (or even demanding) a raise, and threatening to accept a new offer. The new offer shows that you're already unhappy with your current job and have been looking elsewhere. Unless you're really irreplaceable, they'll wait until they've found a new person for the job and then fire you.

    I suspect that the 2MB requirement is for installation only. Whether it keeps a transaction log or saves the changes temporarily to a different location, that information still needs to be saved somewhere.

    Otherwise you'd end up with a read-only hard drive. From personal experience, I can tell you that the hard drive is writable while you're using the system. The first time I saw it, I just thought that the computer was being reimaged upon boot.

    I notice CRT flicker at 75Hz. I don't know about 75-85 because I've never seen a monitor that worked at 80Hz. I do know that this is not my imagination, because I notice it when I sit down at a new computer (and then proceed to change the refresh rate.)

    Well, that's the thing. All of the insurance companies will not do it, because there will always be enough people not willing to sacrifice their privacy. But yes, it will cost more.

    Although I would never get one of these devices voluntarily, I think this is just as fair as the other example someone gave -- health insurance companies charging smokers more. Sure, some smokers are more healthy than some non-smokers, but it's an obvious detriment to one's health that the insurance companies can separate people by.

    You have the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. However, this is only in respect to the government, as you have no choice over what it does.

    When it comes to your insurance company, you have entered into that relationship voluntarily.

    The insurance companies are in the same business, but they are not the same entity. On the contrary, they are competitors. A few insurance companies can conspire to inflate rates together, but there will always be another one who will choose to gain new customers (and keep existing ones content) instead of conspiring with the competition.

    I was at a Starbucks recently, trying to run down my Starbucks Card. Since it's been in my wallet for ages, the magstripe wasn't scanning very well. After a few tries, the person at the register wrapped it in Saran Wrap (I'm not kidding!) and it worked fine. This was repeated once more later in the day.

    She said her manager swears by that method.

    Any idea why this works? Does the plastic wrap just push the card a little closer to the reader?

    (For the non-USians, Saran Wrap is a thin clear plastic wrap, usually used for wrapping food items.)

    The George W. Bush campaign sent me some campaign announcements to an address that I gave only to a particular "marketing" company. The e-mail address was sold to hundreds of spammers (it's where I get about 75% of my spam), including georgewbush.com. It was the official campaign newsletter (I confirmed the headers), and they did honor my unsubscribe request.

    The e-mail address was only given out once to a single entity.

    The main "argument", if you want to call it that, is that by "don't use my tax money" I don't mean to dictate that opinion over all others. There cannot be effective government if each of us get a veto instead of a vote.
    No, that would be an effective market economy, where I get to decide where my earnings go -- not politicians and the politically-connected.

    I found some really clever spyware on a co-worker's computer. It's pretty evil, but I was impressed.

    In case you see something like this, here's how to get rid of it:
    1. Find HijackThis via a third-party site.
    2. Close all Internet Explorer windows.
    3. Run Hijackthis. Remove the hosts file entries, the browser objects, and the startup entries.
    4. Download Ad-Aware and run a full system scan.

    Er, right, so retailers have two prices -- one lower one for those who drive and pay their share of the "freeway tax," and one higher for you and others who don't.

    Why would you pay a lower price? The tolls you are paying are for your car only. The retailers pay tolls for driving their trucks on the highways -- totally unrelated to the tolls you pay.

    There's a lot wrong with the system (teacher's unions, stupid curriculae, wasted money, too much administration, etc.) but your solution is too extreme.
    My "solution" is to have the public schools run by the state -- not the federal government. What's wrong with that?

    Whether or not you drive, you benefit from the freeways. See, products are shipped via truck from the factory to your town via freeway.

    Well, why should I pay for public schools? Especially if I don't agree with a lot of things that are taught in there, and I am planning on sending my kids to a private school. What if I don't want my earnings spent by a politician to pay for the education of people I don't even know. Why should my money be used to force people to stay in school that don't even want to be in school?

    I think most of these envirowhackos, as you call them, are merely misinformed about what's actually happening. Most of the proposed "solutions" do not need to be implemented -- merely their opposite needs to be abolished.

    • "SUV's should be ILLEGAL!" (what about people who haul heavy/large loads, i.e. construction workers?)
      No, but SUVs should not be subsidized via tax breaks.
    • "Well, then people should have to prove they need them then!"
      SUV drivers shouldn't need to prove anything to anyone. They should just pay for everything themselves instead of being subsidized by the taxpayers' earnings.
    • "Nobody should be allowed on the freeway without at least two people in the car!"
      The freeway should be paid for only by people who use the freeway.
    • "Nobody should be allowed to drive more than 15 miles to work!"
      Nobody should have any say about how you get to work.
    • "Public transit!" (This is Los Angeles. Public transit is already inadequate to meet the meager current need)
      While public transit is inadequate in most U.S. cities, it is merely a chicken-and-egg problem largely caused by car subsidies.
    • "Tax gasoline a couple more bucks a gallon to pay for more buses!"
      Stop taxing people not using the gasoline for it.

    If it is a fallacy, then wouldn't there be at least one insurance company that would give you a cheaper rate despite your speeding ticket? Remember, profit is the motive; If you can undercut your competitors and still be in the black, you get more profits.

    Is there such a thing? I've been struggling with several servers that have no phpMyAdmin and no ability to use a MySQL front-end like SQLyog over the network. As a result, I'm forced to do a lot of work through the command line. A text-mode GUI client would be very handy.
