Disclaimer: I don't particularly care if AMD or Intel has the best technology.
I know Slashdot is all about going with the groupthink, but what is with all these AMD fanboys and their awful wordplay on "Leap Ahead"? Have any of you even read one word about what this new marketing campaign is designed to announce and promote? Read up on the technology behind Intel's 2006 chips, namely Yonah, Merom and Conroe. The facts don't lie. By perofrmance per watt and even by absolute performance, despite sticking with 32-bit technology, Intel is going to trounce AMD in 2006 in both mobile, desktop, and server markets. Intel is announcing completely redesigned processors, and essentally all AMD is going to do is push the clockrate of their current designs. Here are some links to back up these claims.

Yet another application of the "maybe if we ignore the problem, the problem will go away itself" mantra the government loves so much. However, I'm not sure whether this case would have allowed the court to tackle software patents.
Let the good folks at Internet2 know that the MPAA is a threat. We've all seen organizations fall for this kind of trickery before, so let the people over at Internet2 know (in a calm and respectful manner) about the true nature and intentions of the MPAA, the widespread implications of accepting them, and the precedent it can set for the future. A contact list for Internet2 representatives can be found on their site. Also, students at universities should find out who they can talk to about this. Many of these people are quite likely oblivious to the MPAA/RIAA's tactics and would take the MPAA at face value. The MPAA is counting on this, don't let them get away with it!
We could soon see cable TV channels with an anti-war bias get censored off the air 'for our own good'
I'm really tired of hearing this slippery-slope argument of liberal outlets being eliminated if the government regulated the media infrastructure. Although there is always the chance of funny-business(TM) once the government gets involved, it's highly unlikey they would move to overtly violate first ammendment rights. If they did, the media itself (even conservative media) would be quick to create a rukus as they always look out for their own good. Grow up, believe it or not the government isn't out to get you.
This was the one of two things holding me back from moving to Linux, as I use my iPod and iTunes a great deal on Windows. The second thing is the ability to import iTunes library data (which is conveniently stored in a nice XML file) into Rhythmbox. That way I can migrate from iTunes to Rythmbox with little trouble. That last feature would make the deal for me. I'd like to move my x86 machines to Linux and save up to get a nice Mac too. =)
All these claims about owning a piece of the Moon, this asteroid, and so on is because of a loophole in a UN charter forbidding governments from owning land in space (but nothing about individuals)...
The deadliness of the virus is related to the addition of a protein IL-4 which shuts down cell-mediated immune response.
Wow, just wow! I can't believe people don't realize how useful this is, and how off base the news poster really is. It was not developed to become a means to kill people. Being able to deactivate the entire immune system with a virus is such a huge leap forward. Now we can see how various biological processes work in the absence of the immune system. We have never been able to supress the immune system on this level. We can learn what functions definately need the immune system, gain new insight into autoimmune disease, and so on. Science always advances by altering or eliminating a variable and observing what happens to the others. I'm sure this sounds awfully familiar to all you CS people who spend hours debugging. Next time think before jumping to the OMG DEY R TEH Ev1L!!!11 conclusion.
It would be nice if we could get this at the other end of Cambridge... Wait, Harvard doesn't even have the dorms wired for Cable TV yet! Damn you MIT, one day we'll show you! *shakes fist*

The beginning of the end! It is indeed the "Year of Linux."
Let me get this straight... Microsoft just patented the hold-click? That's it, I gotta go patent the double-click before anyone else!

So instead of paying the ISP, I'd have to end up paying Uncle Sam through taxes. It's a lose-lose situation.
I love how this is modded 5, Insightful.
Yessss, my precciiouusss. Your power cannot be denied, precious.
