13 year olds are often babysitting younger kids. If they can handle that responsibly they can be on their own as well. It depends on the kid more than anything else, not some strict age limit.
Your view point seems to be the common failure(IMO) with the average American view point. America is all about ME and NOW without thinking about others and even FUTURE YOU. Well what happens if you suddenly get sick, lose your job, you're totally screwed. I don't like that some people are not taking care of themselves thus raising health costs for everyone here(Canada) but when you weigh that with the benefits of not having to really worry about costs if you happen to get sick, well that is much better IMO then getting stuck with some huge bill you can never pay off.
I once read someone in America talking about saving up $20,000 just to pay the hospital when his wife has a baby. Living in Canada, this is such a foreign idea to me that you would even have to think of such a thing if you don't have insurance. Sure kids are a big financial burden overall but the last thing any new parent should be thinking about is a huge bill just for having a kid in a hospital.
Here is Apple's test for 10 hrs battery life claim. This test is pretty stressful IMO but not as stressful as 10 hrs straight video decoding:
"Testing conducted by Apple in January 2010 using preproduction iPad units and software. Testing consisted of full battery discharge while performing each of the following tasks: video playback, audio playback, and Internet browsing using Wi-Fi. Video content was a repeated 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. Audio content was a playlist of 358 unique songs, consisting of a combination of songs imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC encoding) and songs purchased from the iTunes Store (256-Kbps AAC encoding). Internet over Wi-Fi tests were conducted using a closed network and dedicated web and mail servers, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages, and receiving mail once an hour. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off. Battery life depends on device settings, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPad units; actual results may vary."

The article mentions that with this gene missing there is also an increase in programmed cell death due to DNA damage. You could infer from that the possibility that this increases your resistance to cancer since the damaged cells are more readily killed before they can multiply.
IF he really wants a smart phone, just use Skype for international calling if you can. If you get an iPhone it can't run in the background so your parents can't bug you whenever they want. Skype over 3G is allowed and although it's not the best, it's cheap and may get you by.
The FDA states, anything that is used to treat a disease or condition is a drug. If you were to try selling vitamin C to treat scurvy, congratulations, you can be attacked by the FDA for selling an unapproved drug. That is no joke btw. This is exactly why every supplement you buy says "this product is not intended to treat, or cure any disease and is not approved by the FDA"
The FDA is a friggin joke. They've been caught numerous times falsifying data and approve drugs that later turn out to kill people. This is because the FDA does not actually do a full examination of each new drug. They just rubber stamp a lot of drugs based on what the pharmaceutical companies tell them.
I wouldn't be surprised if we hear that the FDA is going after this company within the next month or so, even if they think they have gotten around the rules.
Actually, lots of people know Steve's email address and it's not that hard to find. He does actually reply to some emails, and if you have a problem with your Apple device that isn't getting resolved, emailing him directly usually gets you a good result if you have a legitimate problem. This one could have easily been faked since all you have to do is find previous emails he's replied to and copy the headers.
In most other countries, you can tether your iPhone to your computer and you are just subject to whatever data cap you get with your plan. I have a 6GB plan with my iPhone for $30 CAD/month and all I have to do is plug my iPhone into the computer with tethering turned on and the computer(MBP w/ Snow Leopard) recognizes the internet connection.
AT&T also has a 5GB cap on their "unlimited" plan so they are not in danger of people doing hundreds of gigs per month over cellular. AT&T also just removed the restriction of streaming video over 3G with the Slingbox app and similar apps. Same thing with VOIP over 3G which is now allowed on AT&T.
Now as to why they won't allow tethering the iPad through the iPhone? I think it has more to do with the carriers view it as a separate mobile device since it has it's own 3G radio(if you get that version). They wouldn't allow tethering a cell phone through another cell phone, so that is probably the reason. Even though that's a BS reason since the iPad is more than just a 3G device, but that's my bet.
Just because the money COULD have been used for something else, doesn't mean it actually WOULD. The insurance company wouldn't have taken the $620K and sent it elsewhere, they'd keep it.
This "tiling" thing is the exact same thing that cell companies do in dense cities. They put up microcells with low output and a small service area so they can reuse the same frequency in a cell not very far away. Some routers will allow you to adjust the power output so I don't see why you couldn't use the same type of setup IF you have the room to space them out.
Ghosts in the machine. You see, random bits of computer code can clump together and form unintended actions. At least that's what I've read in this crazy book.
That could be but every automatic I've ever seen has Reverse>Neutral>L1>L2>Drive. They have a stop going from neutral to reverse that prevents you shifting into reverse when the car is moving. Also the clutch in automatic transmissions will slip if you shifted fast from drive into neutral. If that's not how the Toyotas work then they seem to be deviating from the most common operation of the automatic transmission.
You'd think if not the first reaction, that would be the second reaction if the brakes didn't work. "OMG if only there was some way to disengage the engine from the wheels, why didn't anyone think of that?!?!?!" it's called neutral you dolts. That is as long as the Prius and the other cars aren't locked into drive by the computer. I haven't hear of that happening however.
Do you see many men walking around looking at porno mags? I don't. I fail to see why anyone would think they'd be walking around watching porn on their phones just because of these apps. That was the same reasoning of not wanting internet on airplanes. People said everyone will be looking at porn now on planes. I haven't heard of anyone doing this yet. You see people have some self interest of not looking like a fool watching porn on a plane or in the middle of the street.
OT but I was really surprised to see how many abandoned cars there are at the side of the road in Detroit. Once in a while you see them sometimes on the highways in SW Ontario but they're gone in a day because the owner gets it towed to get fixed. In Detroit, while driving to the airport from the US/Canada border, I saw no less than 10 cars on the side of the highways. Surprisingly most still had their wheels.
LOL, are you forgetting about the motherfucking carpet bombing of entire cities that occurred during WWII? The way modern wars are fought is much nicer on the civilians. If they were playing by WWII standards today, they'd just bomb all of Iraq, Afghanistan, maybe Iran, and there'd be nothing left.

Just don't plug it into iTunes, you'll be OK.

Dirty old IT guys are probably trying to catch some n00d cheerleaders in the locker room.

And then Google owns it instead of another company. Not much different. Do you think they'd just pay billions of dollars so they can make it free?
