Um, do you think this device is aimed at anyone that would know how to set up a ZFS pool like that? All you have to do with this thing is plug in 2 drives and install a driver if their claims are true. It's only 33 Euros which is not a bad price, although who knows if they'll come out with drivers for other OS'
"iPads are meant for people that DON'T care about computers, but about real world activity."
I disagree with that partially. I don't think there's any reason this is limited to non technical people. I'm a Software Engineer and I will probably get the iPad. The reason being is that when you are on the couch you don't necessarily need a full blown computer all the time. Laptops get warm on your lap sometimes and just having this thing around reduces the need to bring the laptop in some circumstances. Surely it'll appeal to a non technical crowd but I don't think that means it's not appealing to anyone else.
So put your work to use and sell something on the App Store. If you can't make back the $99 in one year of sales then your app is crap and/or your marketing is crap. $99 is not really a big deal. If you just want to tinker then use the simulator that comes for free.
You can develop on the iPhone simulator for free and it doesn't require any iPod or iPhone. If these kids have an iPod or iPhone which cost hundreds of dollars I don't see how $99 is any less out of reach. If you want to have an iPhone development class on a shoestring budget, sign up for the FREE developer account and develop using the FREE XCode tools and simulator. There is nothing closed about development on OS X or the iPhone. Testing on the device needs a code signing certificate which is one thing you get out of the paid membership.
That's because 3.2 is BETA and not even released yet just like the iPad. When the iPad actually comes out in 2 months, my guess is iPhone OS 3.2 will be released as well. I expect there will be an OS 3.2 beta released for the iPhone pretty soon since some features are common to both platforms.
I don't even really follow this stuff and even I've heard about it for a little over a year. The US Air Force would have known this thing is coming for quite some time.
If you bought it with 2.x and 3.x was already out, you should get a free update, but I'm not sure how that works since I didn't have to do that. 2.x to 3.x for iPod Touch is normally not free since the Touch is not subsidized by monthly subscription fees. Seeing though that you are developing apps on the Touch, you require an iPhone Developer account which gives you access to download the OS images you can use to install the new OS.
Yes I can tether my iPhone simply by plugging it into my Mac and having tethering enabled on the iPhone. Snow Leopard instantly recognizes it as a new device and sets up the tethering for you. No I don't live in the USA where AT&T runs the show, I live in Canada, where Rogers rips us off but at least I can tether.
"I doubt Apple will release XCode for the tablet...."
Why wouldn't they? They'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't. It might run existing iPhone apps but running on a tablet is different and running your app with an interactive debugger like you can do with the iPhone or iPod Touch is a necessity if it's going to run 3rd party apps. The iPhone took off because of the App Store. While I hope this tablet, if it's true, is not tied directly to the app store, it should at least be able to have 3rd party apps running on it.
You do realize that being over stressed is dangerous, increases risk of heart attack, decreases life expectancy, etc.. You see, when you are stressed, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol, both of which are detrimental to health if the levels are elevated for long periods.
The iPhone supports a subset of what the Mac can play since it uses a hardware decoder chip. The movies it can play are limited by resolution and bit rate.
"How about getting the user's account pwned through a security hole in a poorly written plug-in codec that was never meant to deal with intentionally malformed video files?"
Kind of like what happens with Flash today? I'm not so certain that whatever Mozilla would include with Firefox would necessarily be any better. They are constantly patching security holes in Firefox just like every other piece of software.
To play Flash video, the USER has to install the Flash plugin. I don't see how it is any different if they have to install a different plugin to play H.264 video.
How is this any different than it is now? If I want to view Quicktime videos on Windows, I have to install Apple's Quicktime browser plugin. I don't see what the big deal is if they did the same with HTML5 videos.
Hell, with Flash video being one of the most popular, we have to have the swiss cheese Flash player plugin that is riddled with vulnerabilities. I'm not sure how having Mozilla be responsible for the video decoding is any better except that they can force people to upgrade the decoder when updating the browser. Since they're moving this way with doing the automatic plugin updater, it's not really of much benefit having them do the video decoder IMO.
The ironic part is most of the Acrobat reader vulnerabilities are accessible due to javascript. Disable javascript support in the reader and you are pretty safe from most of the exploits. I don't know if that holds true for the flash player though.
The session setup of SSL is the huge bottleneck. Symmetric encryption, while more expensive than not encrypting, is still pretty fast and is what is used for all of the data transfer over SSL.
When you go to work for Apple and just about every other company in existence, you sign an NDA. There might not be any specific tablet NDA, it's just covered under the general one you sign saying you won't release trade secrets before the company does.
This also reminds me of the people who complain that the wind turbines put near their house 500m or more away cause them mysterious ailments. Someone should do an experiment where they erect a new tower but don't actually turn it on in the first place and see what happens. My guess is it'll be just like this where people all of a sudden think they are getting sick from a towering non powered antenna.
Especially since these "hackers" admit their email addresses match their screen names so it'd be pretty trivial for someone to screw with them.

Naked child != kiddie porn. I know Americans are prudes but you realize there are nude beaches where *gasp* naked kids run around.

It's not the SDK, it's the new SDK Agreement which has now changed.

Yes it's a yearly fee, I had to renew mine late last year.

I wonder if it'll finally be possible to get an unlocked iPhone(in USA) without paying $600+ for it now.
FAA restricted airspace, ground level to 120,000' due to crazy guy jumping from balloon. Radius 100 nautical miles.
