I just did a fresh emerge of Mozilla 1.1 last night on my Gentoo 1.2 box and it installed Enigmail also, so Mandrake isn't the only distro doing this...
When I proposed to my significant other, I had a white gold and diamond ring in mind, but I took my other half with me to the jeweler, and I will be forever happy that I did - he didn't want a diamond, he wanted a simple gold band.
So, this just goes to show, do what (s)he wants, not what you want.. Maybe you should talk to her about it first? It may spoil your surprise, but atleast she can look down at her finger for the rest of her life and know she got exactly what she wanted.
I wholeheartedly disagree here. Mozilla does not look like a Windows app, nor does it really function like one.
I want Mozilla to work the same on my Windows box at work, my laptop and my SPARC box at home. I _adore_ the fact that it looks the same and works the same in every environment. I think the decision to use their own GUI toolkit was a great idea. Consistency, consistency, consistency!!! Remember, that's one thing that Microsoft and Apple strive for, and that's why they have entire usability divisions. Without the XUL interface, Moz would look totally different on every environment I use it in, and that would bug the hell outta me, and make it next to impossible to use.
Anyone remember the DOS days? Did WordPerfect function even remotely like Lotus 1-2-3, or Paradox, or dBASE, etc etc? How difficult was it to learn the apps because you had to relearn everything you previously knew about how to navigate on your PC? I'd rather NOT return to those days, thankyouverymuch.
Mozilla is an all-in-one app. If you don't like it, run Chimera, or Galeon or something. Galeon is a wonderful browser (and ONLY a browser)
It's funny, I used to despise Netscape and Mozilla, because I got used to IE's rendering of pages. Now it's exactly the opposite. If it wasn't for a few internal pages at work I have to hit with IE, I'd _never_ open that browser again.
Microsoft doesn't code the unit to call 911. If anyone is using up the taxpayers money by having it dial 911, the fault belongs squarely on the heads of the script kiddie who wrote the virus.
It's almost like saying it's GM's fault that someone can drive a car drunk and kill themselves.
It's not really for only developing "Open Source" applications - it's restricted to GPL licensed apps. The BSD license is also an Open Source license, but apparently isn't allowed under the Free version of Kylix.
A lot of the issues you've talked about are already taken care of.. (Mind you, I'm in the US)
* Calendar: if it's that annoying to you, use a WAP based one. Maybe I'm biased since I write them for a living, but you can get your alerts, appointments, etc etc that way, and you can access them from your normal HTML browser too.
* Nice T9.. The T9 on my Nokia 3360 works quite well.
* Amber backlight. Check out the Siemens S46. Amber backlight, WAP browser, GSM 900/1900 and TDMA 800/1900. Also has an MP3 player accessory.
As for the rest, damn, I wish I could get a phone like that too.
The closest thing I can think of to what you require would be a Nokia 9200 Communicator...
OpenGL is cool on phones, but I have to agree that it won't be that useful. Eventually I'd like to think it will be.
Okay, $1999 for the 17" iMac.. That's NOT bad, if you consider the display itself is worth almost $700+ (comparing to a Samsung SyncMaster 171S), and the SuperDrive isn't exactly cheap on its own either. Sure, Apple wants a bit too much for RAM, so just get it with 256 megs and get on crucial.com to buy the rest of your RAM.
I've been a die-hard PC user for years, but I'm also a wireless nut (cell phones and such).. The Bluetooth integration and that display just excited me and gave me goosebumps...
I know this is the Mac I _have_ to own.
My boss just made a comment - he'd love to buy his wife one, but he's afraid she'd never touch a Windows PC ever again.:)
Porting to/from MFC is a total pain - I don't reccommend it.
wxWindows is a great product. One of it's best features, IMHO, are all the language bindings. It's very easy to prototype your app in wxPython, then convert to a C/C++ app later.
Plus, if you ever want to run your app on anything other than Windows, MFC is defintely not the right choice.
Honda now makes a Civic hybrid (competitor to the Prius) - it's just a Honda Civic with a hybrid engine.

I personally think it's a much more attractive choice than the other options:)

One thing we're not used to in the US is paying for usage, but this is the trend everywhere else. Unfortunately, this will be the case very soon - the wireless carriers are looking for ways to bill for usage. Data is the next step (including your games). Your best bet if you don't want to pay usage will be to try out the J2ME and BREW games on your cellphone when they're available. I'm sure there will be games that don't require you to be online to play, however, you'll have to spend some money using your carrier's "vending machine" to load them onto your phone.
...seems like this would be a bad thing for companies like IKEA... If these things keep consolidating, I won't need to run out and buy a new entertainment center every 6 months because the old one didn't hold enough toys!!
Take a look at KOffice (I know, here starts the religious war)
After using both KOffice and OpenOffice, I found the performance of OpenOffice to be unbearable. KOffice may not have quite the feature set of OpenOffice, but it's speed is great, and it's overwhelming "polished" look thanks to it being a KDE app.
I'm all for something replacing MS Word. But will someone _please_ code in a "Reveal Codes" feature like what WordPerfect had? This is the one thing I still miss about WordPerfect.
I also find I still want to hit / in my spreadsheet to do things, but I don't use a spreadsheet that much so I can cope:)
That being said, the claim that Macs are more limited than Windows boxes is pretty tough to defend. The MacOS has a native, modern and free-with-the-OS scripting language -- AppleScript. Windows has the limited, ugly-as-hell and slow batch file system.
Whoa, hold up dude...
Windows ships with JScript and VBScript support that you can use to replace batch files.
I agree with the rest of your opinions here, but the scripting one is just plain wrong.
Can someone explain how Microsoft setting the price of Windows at $89 (That sounds about right? I haven't bought a copy since Windows 95) is price gouging?
According to Outpost.com:
MacOS X 10.1.3 - $129
On IBM's site:
OS/2 Warp 4 - $284
(I'd prefer responses that weren't full of anti-Microsoft rhetoric, thankyou)
One other good usage of tablet PCs is in the aviation industry. Moving map GPS, combined with weather reports, sectional charts, etc - this is a great replacement for a pilot's kneeboard.
A lot of this is already possible with PDAs, but a tablet PC would give you more processing power combined with a much larger display.
You're right, Stallman is actually being reasonable. *gasp* But, given his track record, are you surprised that people automatically assume he's not being reasonable?:)
Funny, you install Ximian Desktop like this:
lynx -source http://go-gnome.org | sh
in a terminal window as root.
I haven't heard anyone complain about that....
I just did a fresh emerge of Mozilla 1.1 last night on my Gentoo 1.2 box and it installed Enigmail also, so Mandrake isn't the only distro doing this...

Anyone attempted something like this with a Gateway Solo 2500?
:)
That crappy NeoMagic card has got to go...

I have to wonder if the parent walks everywhere he goes, or if he takes a bus?
Go install Gentoo and compile the entire system from scratch, including, but not limited to, GNOME and KDE.
See how long that takes.
Set this registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\CompletionChar to 9 - voila! Tab completion!
Other option: install Cygwin and bash. Ahhh, the joys of a real grep command in Windows.....

You have an interesting point here.. The DishPlayer had a 30 second skip button also, but Dish never seemed to get attacked for this...
AT&T _does_ do this, they did it at my old house in Kirkland, WA...
