Well, I once flew a 747 from LA to London in Microsoft Flight Simulator without using the autopilot or time compression.... And, yes, I used your recipe for it. Was a great time, however I screwed up the landing because I was too wasted at that point of time.
Small comment from a prion researcher on the Phosmet thing. I personally do not buy into that. The influence of copper on neurodegenerative disease is very unclear at the moment. A disturbance in copper concentrations in the central nervous system is not only observed with BSE/CJD, but in nearly all neurodegenerative diseases, eg. Alzheimer, Parkinson's, and it is also found associated with brain trauma. Now, the prion protein is a known copper binding protein and is hypothesized to play a role in maintaining the copper homeostasis at the presynaptic membrane, so one could see a direct link there. I think, however, that the effect is rather the reversed one. Prion malfunction leads to copper inbalance leads to neurodegenerative effects. It is not primarily an effect of missing copper.
Additionally, the Phosmet hypothesis does not properly explain transmissibility of prion diseases, which has been experimentally validated in high detail. It does not explain prion diseases of other species than cattle, e.g. deer, cats, mink, humans, rats, mice, sheep. It does not explain the in vitro generation of infectivity from recombinant prion protein, as done in Stanley Prusiners lab last year.
So, generally, I'd say there is a reason why this hypothesis has not made it into the mainstream. This, however, does not exclude a possible role of organophosphates in the UK BSE epidemic. Use of such compounds may very well have provided the conditions that made such a large scale epidemic possible and would very well explain why no other country has seen a similar scale in infections, though thousands of tons of infected meat-and-bone meal have been exported from the UK even during the peak time of the epidemic.
The causative agent of the disease is however the prion protein. Given the current state of research this is beyond reasonable doubt.
If only kuro5hin hadn't devolved into a troll-infested, self-referential, not-even-semi-intellectual circle-jerk of late. I'd rather suggest taking a look at plastic.
No, European blood cells are about 3cm x 1.5cm. That's also why if you're an American in Europe and you need a blood transfusion you need to use an adapter.
Obviously the intelligent designer screwed up in a imperial-to-metric measurement conversion at some point...
True, that's how science is supposed to work - and mostly, it works this way. Being a scientist myself, I have to add that unfortunately, the whole show is run by humans. So, every now and then, you still are confronted with arguments from authority, and in some cases, new views are only able to be established by waiting for the current authorities to retire or die. As every human business, science ain't perfect in this regard.
So, having a certain amount of taste and sticking with it, is considered "condescending" today? Listen, man, I do not care what you listen to. You can listen to all assorted popular crap as much as you like. I just reserve the right to name it what it is. And that is CRAP.
Well, if the grandparent is right, I might have to try Planetside - as soon as I overcome my EVE addiction... Ok... guess that means not in this life. Piloting a Claw - can't get any more tactical or RL skill intensive:)
That is another point of course - I am a native german speaker. I'd rather have a good english soundtrack which actually complements the acting, than a wooden german dub. Of course if you want to learn some german, that is different.
Exactly, except i can go without the subtitles. You know why I do not go to the cinema anymore? I can't stand the german dubbed crap. Horrible, just horrible, in most cases. Since the availability of multi-language DVDs and undubbed versions from... well, you know from where, I can't be arsed to put up with crappy dubs any more. They can take their german dubbed, crippled, overprized crap and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. I do not care.
True - I can't give you a detailed breakdown for this. But - I do not hear the industry complaining about environmental regulations here, anyway. Most industries are actually saving money under the ecological laws here - the initial investments into energy saving equipment have long payed off.
The german unemployment is mostly linked to high costs of labor, which are not related to environmental policies in any way.
Which is not related to the environmental politics, but rather a consequence of a) some admittedly catastrophically wrong decisions in other political areas - e.g. wellfare state, and b) the incredible burden of the reunification with eastern germany in the last decade, which was a barren, post-communist wasteland at that time.
If you look at specific branches of industry, you will find the environmental industries to be thriving, world class, innovative and expanding.
Just when did being liberal become a bad thing?! I'm getting damned fed up with this word being used as an insult or being blamed for everything wrong with the world. It's going to end up demonised like the word 'communist' in America - peopel will forget its real meaning and just associate it with 'evilness'. And this is exactly the goal of this rightwing spin campaign.
It is not so much american politics that disturb me - it is the incredible low at which the political discussion culture in the US seems to be at the moment.
Pssst.... this is a climatology-related political discussion on slashdot. You are NOT supposed to make sense here. But, hell, yeah - I'd like to see the supposed liberals here on slashdot, too. The GP nicely demonstrates the batshit-crazy rightwing mindset of seeing an evil liberal conspiracy at work everywhere - LOOK! THERE COULD BE A COMMUNIST UNDER MY BED!!!
I love the smell of burning strawmen in the morning....
Seriously... take a look at germany, for example. Huge investments into cutting down emissions and establishing clean energy sources. Those did in fact lead to the creation of jobs, and the establishment of world-class industries in the eco sector.
Uhm... where the hell are you working? I mean, what is left for a molecular biologist to talk about, if you exclude these topics? This is the very core of structural biology - and a lively topic of discussion and speculation where I work. You know, not all science is about funding and buzzwords. To be honest, I am getting somewhat tired about this argument, which seems to be constantly reiterated on Slashdot. Molecular biology, as I experience it, is a very dynamic field full of people pursuing topics out of interest, not because they chase after grant money.
Of course it is a pig. It wouldn't be considered a pig anymore if it couldn't mate and produce fertile offspring with normal pigs. One GFP-Gene won't give you that result.
Well there are some uranium deposits in Germany - as far as I know in the Fichtelgebirge in northeastern Bavaria and in the Harz. None of them are commercially exploited anymore, as it is not economically feasible. My major concern is rather the lack of a viable long-term storage facility for highly radioactive waste.
Guys, if you wanna have fun, just take an old satellite dish and cover the inside with reflective tape. Be careful where you point it, though. For added pleasure, mount a lens - the parameters of which are dependent on the dish and are left as an exercise to the reader - into the focal point, using the receiver mount. Then be REALLY careful where you point it...

Yeah, right.... Hitler was as socialist as they come... btw "socialism" != "totalitarianism", mmkay?

Don't tell me you play or played WoW, Winterblink... Get back to the drawingboard and give me another Warp Drive Active! ;)
Yes, Crichton is a renowned climatologist, and his publications have gone through rigorous peer review.
Only if you get laid...

The "global warming lobby", eh? Who would that be? What would they be lobbying for? Show them to me, already.
