I can confirm this for you. The particular characteristics which lead to the sharp, diffuse... etc, characterization are however so distant from todays spectroscopy, that no one actually uses them anymore. Definitely takes some crusty, old, half-fossilized chemist to remember them.Fortunately, I know a lot of those.
Agree with you on the thermodynamics of grey goo. We already have nano-machinery - they are called bacteria. If a grey-goo scenario was thermodynamically feasible, it would have happened a long time ago.
Minor nitpick, though: The nanomachines wouldn't need an encyclopedic knowledge of chemistry, they just would need the ability to mutate and evolve.
Very small particulate matter might be a problem because it is able to penetrate the small bronchiolas of the lung. There it can accumulate, cause it is not cleared out by the normal clearing mechanisms (slime, coughing, etc) - this might under certain circumstances reduce lung function (cv. asbestos, silicosis) or increase the cancer risc (diesel exhaust particles).
Now, this is of course not a new problem, and neither an unmanagable problem - and certainly no reason to abolish nano-materials.
Doh., yes, of course. Still, some elaboration could be helpful. I mean, just imagine the bogon flux patterns that would emerge from a setup of a marxist, a trozkyist and a maoist in the same room. Hell, to make it even more interesting, put an additional free-marktet randroid in there... Is there something like a critical bogon mass, or a critical bogon flux density? Even better, put a sensible non-ideologue into that room - someone able to emit anti-bogons. What is the result of bogon-antibogon annihilation?
You see, though QBD sets the framework for this kind of research, there is still a lot of work to be done. I'd suggest, however, to conduct these experiments in a secure location, far away from settlements, just to be on the safe side.
Thank you Sir, for clearly stating your affiliation. Please stay calm and wait for the black helicopters to pick you up for an extended... interview. Thank you for your cooperation.
Hey, slide rules *are* cool. I'm still using one in my lab - fast, geeky, and, most important, easy to clean. Ever tried decontaminating a calculator when you spilled some biological crap on it?
Well, I agree that this is most likely bound to fail, but I still think that the details of the failure might still prove instructive. After all, this is no either-or situation, one can try that and still continue to sample biological data.
In this case, a "qstat" or "usage" would have been more appropriate, depending on the queuing system they used, of course. You wouldn't just want to know the load on a single node, or possibly just the frontend, would you?
Is there a mod for utterly mindboggingly stupid? Linux sucks as a gaming platform - therefore the windows gaming market should die to support your ridiculous little ideology?? Come on!
To all the console fanbois - I won't touch one of those things as long as I can get a load of mods for my games. Look at the PC scene and the amazing amount of content modders provided for games like FS2004, Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights, Harpoon or Falcon. As long as such a vibrant scene is alive, the PC as a gaming platform is far from dead.
Besides, as long as there is no nethack or T.O.M.E port to a console, I won't take these puny little gadgets serious.
What?? Oh... you meant that arcade-ish zapping 'round in the sky like in BF1942, not flying. When I hear "flying", I think Falcon 4, FS2004 or IL-2. Show me one console controller that can give me decent control in a real sim.
India under the British colonial occupation, the former Soviet Union, hell, the whole Eastern Bloc. Should be enough examples for starters. And if you don't get enough coverage now, you have to rally more supporters.
There have been a lot of "regime changes" which did not stem from violent revolution. You don't even need to overthrow a government to change the fscking IP law. It is not that black and white.
All of the above happen in CO2.

One hour at least. Then again, I'm probably heavily biased, playing mostly Falcon, Harpoon and EVE online. I like my hard learning curves...
Thanx man! Steep learning curves are my kind of thing... I'll try it right away!
Hi pbaer!
Is your trial key offer still valid? If yes, could you please send me one to jziegler AT scripps DOT edu?
Thanks!
That is the problem - I'll stick with Op. Flashpoint and count the days till the sequel arrives.
Remember: Everything's more fun naked, except frying with grease...
No good basis for a naked anti-teflon-kitchenware protest.

Na.. that's nanogator-leather shoes, purses and belts...

Anyway, nice one, you should elaborate that into a treatise on marxistic-leninistic high energy physics.

Build a tunneling bot man... You call yourself geek? We might have to revoke your card!
That has to be the typo of the year, dude. Cthurch of Scientology... Sounds rather lovecraftian. Didn't know that they worshipped the Old Ones now.
Well, I agree that this is most likely bound to fail, but I still think that the details of the failure might still prove instructive. After all, this is no either-or situation, one can try that and still continue to sample biological data.
Oh, and model building isn't a viable way to gather more information?
