There are lots of jobs in the US where you can influence your hours. Back when I had menial jobs I could (and did) swap shifts with the other employees as long as the manager was okay with it.
If it's working so great in Europe, why do so many countries have double-digit youth unemployment? Did you ever consider the possibility you think it "worked great" because you can't see the millions of jobs not created?
Making a threat or just pointing out the obvious? After the numbers came out in Seattle, can we stop pretending high minimum wages don't create unemployment?
There's nothing magical about sliced pickles. I expect burgers will be topped with pickle relish instead, and enough consumers won't care that it will be a profitable switch.
Can we dispense with the "well qualified" bullshit? Robert Bork was also well qualified.
The reality is the court is ruling on subjects so far out of its original mandate it's perfectly reasonable for the Senate to require prospective judges to have an acceptable judicial temperament. The founders knew it would be a political decision, anyhow - they gave it to the Senate. In this case the candidate is anti-2nd amendment, so he doesn't belong on the court.
Wind is more expensive than fossil fuels on an ongoing basis. Those turbines are expensive to maintain, and they do take damage from various sources (mostly weather).
The biggest reason we need to indulge in "an extremely high tech bit of manufacturing" is it costs so damn much to put a kg into orbit. If you could actually manufacture electronics and other hardware in space you could afford much higher defect rates, particularly if you had a large supply of raw materials. Beyond that you wouldn't need to build for high G forces or compactness, or use high tech alloys in an effort to shave off every last bit of mass. You could build hardware designed to be easy to manufacture and serviceable.
You have an odd definition of "pacifist". Keeping a strong defense but not using it unless attacked is the mark of a neutral country, not a pacifist country.
It's going to be many years before China can beat the US in open water, if it's ever the case at all. Add Japan into the mix and it's even more lopsided.
China is a military threat to Taiwan, but only because they could probably finish the invasion and dig in before the US had a chance to respond.
China doesn't have the capability to invade the Japanese home islands. I'm not even sure Japan would go to war over rocks in the South China Sea, but they may if China claims all the fish and oil in the region.
Ordinarily, such a headline might be considered sensationalist reporting and a batch of sci-fi -- except DARPA is involved.
DARPA is involved in a lot of things that don't work out. If anything, DARPA involvement means it's far enough in the future most of us will already be dead even if they get somewhere.

Agreed on all points. This author has a bright future writing about glaciers.
How many countries have a high minimum wage and low unemployment?
The other way to look at that is "Society says that if you labor isn't worth at least $x, you should have nothing."

Monetary compensation is flat, but people are receiving more in total compensation. The extra money has gone to health care.
Still, the numbers work out in his favor, and that's assuming she's going to be provided with a social safety net.
On of the left's "chilling effect" canards is actually real?
Yes, I'm aware. Orin Hatch is an idiot.
Oh! You're so funny!. Wait, no, that was stupid.

Oh, you're right.
The decision was to give control of the Senate to the Republicans.
No... if "that way" is Joe Biden's way (and Chuck Schumer's), they'll let Obama's term run out without doing anything.
Right, right. Because, if not for oil, we could just strike the military out of the budget.

I'm glad to see Anonymous's war on ISIS has been completed successfully.
Or maybe the people involved are starting high school soon.

Why do people who claim to be "speechless" then proceed to blabber on for another ten or fifteen minutes?

If this worries the Chinese, or the Russians, or the North Koreans, maybe they should stop giving Japanese nationalists material to work with.
