  1. Not sure I understand on Video Game Labeling Law Passed In New York · · Score: 1

Nevermind this "why is this unconstitutional" discussion everybody else is having, I'm trying to understand what's in this law that makes it different from what we have now. OK let's take it one point at a time...

    1) Aren't games already labeled by the ESRB? With clear and easy to understand content descriptors on the back of the box? What more will those (redundant) labels add to this?

    2) Don't all current generation consoles already have parental controls, based on ESRB ratings?

Aren't they just asking for stuff that's already there? Someone please enlighten me on this...

I don't think so. Keep in mind that Apple's laptops sell way more than their desktops.

I bet that quite a lot of people buy the MacBook Pro because they want a good desktop Mac, but their only real options are either crap (Mac mini, iMac) or overkill (Mac Pro), so they are forced to look the laptop way instead.

As it stands right now, the MacBook Pro is the only high-end consumer Mac.

Get on with the news, zealots: the final SDK has been released July 11, so the NDA has been lifted for more than a week now. I wish people would stop with that bullshit about not being able to make open source apps on the iPhone.

There is NOTHING stopping you from distributing code that targets the iPhone SDK. In fact, nothing prevents you from distributing binaries of OSS apps on the App Store while still providing source code for them on your website or whatever.

The only problematic license is the GPLv3 because of its infamous anti-tivo clause, but barely anyone uses the v3 anyway, and those using it are RMS fanboy zealots who are better not buying the iPhone because they'll just whine relentlessly about it.

Same thing with the iPod. There's an hardcoded emergency disk mode in ROM, so no matter how fucked up the upgradable firmware is, you can still fix it. Which is very fun for all those iPod hackers out there (like the Rockbox project), because that means you can mess up the thing to your heart's content, without the fear that you might brick it.

I still can't believe how many consumer electronics don't follow that simple rule.

I'm all for open sourcing stuff, but the business model of consoles is all about having a closed platform so you can keep piracy to a minimum. And so far it's been working pretty well for them for the past 25 years or so.

Yes, there's a "small handful" that will constantly break their "closed source world[s]", which in turn requires them to spend money writing and releasing patches all the time, but between that and making their consoles as piracy-friendly as PCs are, I'm pretty sure the former choice is the most profitable one.

Even though the Wii is the only current gen console I own and I am a big fan of the Street Fighter franchise, this doesn't bother me at all because:

    1) The game looks goddamn awful, seriously have you seen it? It looks like a 1999 game, with HD added.

    2) According to what I've read the gameplay is intentionally lacking in new features so it feels more "old-school", which sounds retarded to me. Hell they won't even include the SF3 parry system. If I want "old-school" I'd play an actual old SF game. Capcom has shown here that this game is only about pointless fan service: "see your favorite SF characters now in THREE DEE!!! with the exact same gameplay you're used to!"

    3) According to this it'll be also for PC, which as usual for a japanese game is going to be a very sloppy port, but it will still allow me to play the game if I eventually feel like it.

Oh look, the Loki argument again. And as misfounded as ever, of course.

First of all, Loki was destined to fail from day one because it had a broken business model. Nobody wants to buy 9 month old games at full price, even if it means being able to run it on the OS of their choice. The only way you can actually "sell" a Linux port is if it's produced by the original developer (that includes using a sub-contractor, such as Ryan Gordon), and (this is very important) compatible with the original Windows disc. Which is what id, Epic, etc. already does, in case you hadn't noticed.

Another important point: back in the Loki days (which is now ancient history in terms of computing), Linux had insufficient graphics support. It simply wasn't ready for games. But times have changed, and all major graphic vendors release Linux drivers now. Linux IS ready for games now.

Basically all I'm saying is: You say Linux is worth porting to, fine. I respect your opinion. But PLEASE stop hitting the fucking dead horse that is Loki. It is NOT a relevant point, and it never was.
