"Perhaps if/when they extend it to track all vehicles as a matter of course, I'll be worried about some Orwellian nightmare"
1) What makes you think they aren't? 2) What makes you think you'll be able to stop them then? 3) Do you think its impossible that some 'security agent' monitoring these cameras, doesnt want you going out with his ex wife and abuses the system?
If they put cameras everywhere, everyone should have access to those cameras. Not a select few as it is currently. Anything else is 'us' against 'them' (police/state), and youd best be sure which side your on.
"What is now real was once only imagined..." Guess that means you should care then

The height of instant messenging. Seriously, everyone who doesnt use ICQ is just an instant messenging posuer, a latecommer to the party. the only sober person at a bar, etc.. Instant messenging isnt even a proper term. its ICQing.
I dont get AIM. I tried it or MSN (i froget which one) for a bit and it like tracks every character you type. Like if your writing someone a message, you can tell when they are typing and also how long they wait between words. thats really really annoying.
"Let's say you have a criminal who has been busted for drug charges. You could then find out where he's been, and probably track down where he gets his stuff from, and take it straight up the channels to the big guys."
you fucking narc. drugs and speeding are really the biggest problems society has. good thing you have those bases covered or id be worried! This is a sick idea. Take away honest peoples drugs, and they will have ALOT more time. Alot more bored time. alot more bored time to fuck with you.
"Not everyone is content with the same uniform workstation at home that they have to use at work / school."
so to them you recomend, instead of a infinately mod-able x86/x64 pc, a uniform mac workstation that is the same as every other mac of the same "model". sorry. mac has always been about people who dont care enough about computers to want to swap around parts, or learn how they work. maybe they are in competition with dell in that respect, but at least if you buy a dell, you can add SOME new parts without voiding your "magic box" waranty.
say it with me people. locking you into hardware = bad. maybe MAYBE they will change with moving to x86, but they better drop the price to asian rates. if not, they will continue to be computers for people who have too much money and "creativity". its a marketing gimick. same as buying a gucci bag or ray ban sun glasses.
"Why is it that people don't "get" this - it's not sufficient now to simply make an MP3 player that "does more", or even is as easy to use as an Ipod. You need the whole shebang - the store, the presence on the desktop, the device itself, the ease of transfer between computer and device, the chic design, and good marketing/PR"
disagree.
Good products sell themselves. marketing PR is one of the things i hate the most about the ipod. I go very far not to look trendy. I have an ipod (recieved as a gift) and dislike that people look at it and think its like all style and shit. Id rather have a burned, visibly welded metal box that was more durable, heavier and less prone to getting fingerprints all over it then some sleek white thing.
I have never used itunes, so i dont need the store.
personally, an Ipod killer for me will be when they make something that has 20-40gigs (if not more), does out of the box file transfer, streams divx to a composite port, and the biggest feature, DOESNT COST SO DAMN MUCH. seriously. some people, well actually alot of people (mostly macophiles in the computer world) think that price = quality. I dont care if my ipod is trendy, has big budget comercials with jeff goldblume telling me to "think different" or any of that crap. Make 40+gb availiable for less than $200 CAN and i will easily replace my 20gb ipod.
500$ is insane for something based on a hdd which will probably die in the next 2 years.
In short, id settle for alot less than an ipod. some people just want to stream mp3s at parties/friends places and in the car. dont need no glitz and style for that.
damn right i am! they have a very quick flash heal/regen spell and also can turn into beast form which will rival a warriors tanking. not to mention the very annoying "root" spell. i dont even think you can blink out of root anymore. savages...
i think i speak for everyone when i say nerf teh druids!
"If you play fast action games then CRTs are still the best"
You probably baught a cheap LCD. My Sceptre X9 19" 12ms LCD, cost about 100$ more than the cheapest 19" LCD on the market but the quality is supurb. I can play BF2, wow, quake4, etc.. all look beautiful. 180* turns are flawless with no motion blur. In addition, this particular monitor is shiney/reflective, like a crt, so you get a bit of glare from the sun, but the blacks are truely the most well done i have ever seen.
Where I work we have hundreds of LCDs. verying manufacturers. Some people will get really attached to a perticular model or manufacturer. If we switch it out for them, even say from a 15" to a 17" they immediately complain of eye problems and the like. LCD's come in a vast range or specs. Buy a nice samsung one if you cant afford 550 for the spectre. I use a samsung at work. Tried to switch to an NEC, but couldnt do it. similar feeling to look at a 60hz CRT when you used to 75-85.
also, correct me if im wrong, but Hz doesnt really apply to LCD like it does to CRT. I thought that was true but i dont know why.
Ben Wa balls are said to originate in Japan where they were called Rin No Tama ('tinkling bells') and were made either of metal or ivory. Originally they were a single ball placed in the vagina used to enhance the act of coitus, but shortly evolved into multiple metal covered balls linked by either a chain or silk string for easy removal. Usage of Ben Wa balls create a subtle stimulation, not meant to bring the user to immediate orgasm but rather to tease. Women can "wear" Ben Wa balls all day, or use them while seated in a rocking chair, for a pleasurable effect.
at least now you know why recipients of said balls always look at you kinda funny after they recieve them.
oh to be like scent cone! strict morals that proclude societal advance. surely i must envy you, your gun, and your bird dog.
what do you call someone who is motivated by money to create art? an artist? i wouldnt.
just as every profession, every task that anyone ever does. if its motivated by money, its generally less meaningful then someone who does it for the love. this pretty much holds true in every situation. love your work and you do better work.
the creation of culture will not disapear simply because no one pays the bills. its so easy to push things onto the web, advertise for free via word of mouth and distribute with BT for next to nothing. that couppled with the fact that no matter what people will always express themselves, will guarantee culture will not stop being created.
"Your urge to dictate to an artist what their point is pretty much explains your entire world view."
and your urge to punish new ideas and ways of thinking pretty much explains yours.
The movies were crap and it might help illustrate at least one reason why people pirate. I mean really, who is going to pay for those movies?
I'm always a little perplexed by this line of reasoning.
Again, you fail it and miss the point. The point is that so many hollywood movies are of such a low quality that if you went out and spent 12$ on everyone that vaguely interested you, you would be broke. Most are crap. Some are really good. What GP was saying is that the way they market movies to people, you cannot tell enough about them to make an informed decision on whether to spend the money or not. so you download 90% of them and go see 10% in the theater. I think thats what most pirates do.
As to your other point about people being paid. Boo fricking hoo. its not my responsibilty to prop up organizations and corporations. especially, when they are activly involved in campaigns to arest me and my fellow movie lovers.
You do realize the point of making good movies is not to make a profit, but to further enhance world culture right? If a director, cinematographer, actor, etc would rather make money than have people see their work, they either suck ass, or are a sellout. Of course people need money to live on, someone has to pay them, but the movie studios are hardly running at a loss most of the time. I have also heard that when they do run at a loss, they use quite a bit of "creative accounting" (read tax evasion) to make it seem like the movie cost more than it should have.
If you dont want people to see your movie DONT RELEASE IT. If you would rather have people pay you money than enjoy your movie, your a sellout. we dont need no bleeding heart "why wont someone think of teh gaffers!" as it distracts from the real issues at hand.
and now you know why i love p2p. you can walk to the store, ask the clueless guy if he has it, go home disapointed because he doesnt, drink yourself into a rage, etc.. or you can mosey on over click a link ( http://www.mininova.org/tor/51864 ) and have the movie finish in a few days. not on demand but much more convenient. theres also the fact that i would never ever remember to see this movie unless i wrote it down somewhere. people tell me to see movies all the time. i cant possibly remember them all.
i would pay 5$ CAN for new releases that had a very fast seed and no DRM. no problem. unfortunately, no one wants to make this possible. sad really.
"It's like stating all car repairs should be free!"
bad anology. Its like telling someone how to swap out an alternator (on a radio show), and then not letting them describe to others in as much detail, how to do it. A song isnt a commodity any more than a haynes manual is. My stereo is producing the sound.
A better anology would be that going to see a band at a club is the same as taking your car to the shop. The parts (song, alternator) are availiable to both parties, what counts is that the people actually doing the work ( mechanic, stage musician performing) actually get the money for services rendered. People shouldnt OWN songs. OF course you need to have copyright to give respect to people, but ideally I shouldnt have to pay someone to sing their song, tell their story, or describe how to fix a car. If i could make perfect copies of the aleternator of my car, i shouldnt have to pay anyone to do it.
i have dual opteron 244s , alot of drives (about 7) geforce 6800gt etc. I had similar problems with stability. What helped me was adding another 400watt ps to my already installed 600watt. I just wired it up with a toggle switch and let it sit on the outside of the pc. I then use that to power all my drives, leaving the mobo and addon cards to the 600watt.
I have no stability problems anymore. Since the GP mentioned USB was switching to 1.1, i would say its most DEFINATAELY a power problem, as USB feeds power to devices. Not enough power in, its probably gonna downclock the ports. If i were a usb subsystem thats what i would do.
just to add, and what made me respond is that i have a MSI k8t master2. works beautifully. 600watts is not enough power for an opteron system with fancy things. gotta go 1+Kw to be absolutely sure.
is also slashdotted. why do people think that mirrors can handle the load when the main site cant? you do realize if everyone started linking ALL their stories to coral cache, coral cache would have to bare the load of every slashdot story right? how long do you think they would foot the bill for that. 1 maybe 2 days?
Its just funny how everyone thinks "USE TEH MIRRARS!!!!!1" is the solution to slashdotting, when really there is no defence.
Well all your examples are meaningless. Guns are meant to kill, and only operated by qualified personelle, so they should be identified. Same with explosives. Information however (printed documents), are a complely different animal. You control the information in society, you control alot more than knowing whether your vehicle has been in an accident 5 years ago. You can fear people into not expressing themselves.
Why dont people get this? controling guns = good controling instructions on building a gun = bad
I saw a program, i believe from the BBC on Global Dimming a few months ago. The idea being that at the same that we have been upping the greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere, we have also been blocking out the sun with the various soots and particulate matter that goes with it. This drove us into a net cooling period during those years, as the sunlight was reflected back into space. The researcher explained that this may be why global warming hasnt been as evident as it should have been in the past 30 years.
Now that we burn cleaner gas, and try and be more environmentally friendly, this reflective layer of the atmosphere is getting thinner. this then compounds the global warming aeffect already in motion. perhaps that is what we are seeing today.
