my first question would be, are you sure you arent trying to run anythign else while playing? checked your machine for spyware?
on my dual 244 opterons with 1024 ram and a geforce 6800 gt from double clicking the icon to being in the game is MAX 2 minutes. thats after looking through the server menu for a few seconds too. Mp3s are usually playing fine (no skipping) in the background throughout this time and the other processor has about 25% constantly occupied with shareaza.
a few things to try:
1) Turn OFF or very low (16mb) your agp aperture size in the bios. When set high, the system is locking in that much ram for the video card. Completely unnessecary on a machine with 128 or 256mb video ram.
2) my peak memory usage for this game was 550-600mb. im using win2k, but winxp I know takes about 256mb ram to run smoothly. Therefor 1gig is about the minimum.
3) I had alot of stuttering from my drive. I use a tonne of power. I had 600 watts going into my system (lots of hard drives) but when i baught this 6800 everything was goign slow, hdd errors in event log, etc. I disconnected a bunch of drives and the system ran smooth. What i descovered was that the 6800 needs its own 12v rail! (well mine did anyways). after installing an additional 450w powere supply and riging up a toggle switch to turn it on, the game ran fine. no stuttering.
3) turn hardware sound OFF. this will lead to stuttering.
4) it helps to have your system drive and your bf2 drive on different physical drives. IMHO the system drive should run windows and small programs, thats about it.
5) Search the bf2 DIR for all the.bik files. (ea.bik, dice.bik, etc) these are the movies at the beginning of the game. long long ago i realized that deleting (or renaming) the stupid ea (challeneg everything) movie had NO negitive effects on the game. You can also get rid of the annoying EULA movie.
6) make sure you copy the game to ISO using alcohol 120%. then mount the iso with deamon tools and install off that (so that it thinks thats your CDrom). make sure you kill alcohol 120% before starting the game because it will not run if it detects alcohol 120% running (thanks EA!). that tip alone saves about 30 seconds. my system goes from dbl click to splash screen to game without me having time to even read the splash screen. Do that and delete those opening movies and you get into the characted selection pretty damn fast.
aside from those things, there should be no reason other than it being a p4 and not an AMD (:) ), for it being so slow. I dont follow ATI product numbers but i assume that your video card has at least 128mb ram on it.
anyways, as by the evidence that lots of people have it running smooth on systems way crappier than yours, I would suggest you try and troubbleshoot your hardware or software on your machine. I have a simply smashing time every night. make sure your power supply is of good quality no less than a 450w.

Nah. Just rip it with error block skipping turned on in alcohol 120% takes about an hour, but then all you need to do is: RIp iso. Mount with deamon tools, install (reinstall off ISO so it plays nice with deamon tools without a registy hack). Turn alchol 120% cd emulation OFF (the game is hardcoded to not run with alcohol 120% running). and fire it up.
also another bonus, theres no added delay in booting up the game, waiting for the CD to spin up. My game loads almost exactly when i click the icon.
also i heard that the NO CD hack actually fubars punkbuster as in you can tplay on PB servers. not a problem with isos.
Well I love this game. My geforce 4200 wouldnt run it (aparently by design so you have to upgrade) but the 6800 gt256 is more than enough to handle that.
Its tightly integrated with gamespy, so if your like me and hate that company to death your out of luck. You absolutly need to create a gamespy account to play online. Ripping the CD's to ISO's took a bit longer because of read errors but the game plays fine with the iso loaded with deamon tools. I have heard that if you crack the game for noCD, it will fail punkbuster tests and nto be able to play online. EA's influence is clerely shown on all levels. Once you delete the opening ea movies (.bik) the game is less offensive and loads faster.
Problems are that there are simply not enough maps! where are the old desert combat maps like el alhemin? these maps are too small and dont have enough "fucking around" spaces. The choppers auto hover now which is very nice for crusing. Also as other people said, you can blow bridges and also holes in walls sometimes, depending on the wall.
Does anyone know of any servers that distribute or play custom maps? i was going to start up a server if I could get some maps for it!

erm speaking as someone who just ghosted a failing hard drive to another one using a floppy, i would say that they still have their uses. ghosting is merely one of the many uses i have found. The pervious person who had my position didnt believe in equiping machines with floppy drives. now i have to crack open all those machines, and install a floppy hanging out of the PC when they need ghosting.
Works like, insert floppy to ghost. disk loads NIC drivers. network comes up and then load the.gho img off a network share. Machine is brand new in less than 20 minutes on average.
Have you tried to get machines 3+ years old booting off a USB fob? lol good luck!

The problem is that when you have a magical belief system that pretty much only serves as a control for the masses, you have many people who exploit that control for their own gain. As there are no actual "connections with reality" in most religions, I would say they make everyone who is a part of them, part of the problem. Religion is just one more way to establish and acclimatize people to authoritarian controls. It is pretty much what holds society back from advancing.

Actually the same thing happened to me. Well sort of the same (my connection uses DHCP). My problem was that the webpage configuration never came up. I finaly figured out that this was because my 100mb/var/log was full!
Clearing that out made the smoothy run fine again. It has since happened a few more times and everytime i just have to clear out all the logs. That said, while the disk was full, it was still routing traffic as expected for months before i discovered the issue.
The one thing I would like to see would be a better way of tracking all the connections being setup and torn down by the machine, realtime, say logging to a console window. I used to have a dubbele NETBSD firewall ( http://firewall.dubbele.com/ ) that, becasue of the firewall package on there (vastly superior to iptables IMHO) i could run a simple command (ipmon -o N) and it would list everything going on. very cool. I know about IP contrak mod for smoothwall but on a webpage just doesnt have the same cool feel as realtime. Its nice to catch all those EA games you have calling home when you launch them:)
Anyways the one story i love to tell about the netbsd machine was that the hard drive failed on it months before i found out. The machine was running flawlessly until i rebooted it for some reason and got a nice primary HDD fail in the bios. The last timestamp for a file on the HDD was like 8 months previous.
