If WhatsApp merely stated that in transit is encrypted, but data on your phone is open to discovery, even if deleted, at least they would have been honest.
There is no reason not to tell the driver/owner that a sensor is out or a cable unplugged and that it doesn't take a "factory service center" to fix it.
The chips and coding to provide this info to the "farmer" are trivial compared to the price of the equipment.

Today, the functional pieces are being reduced. The "motherboard" inside a laptop today is really really small.
There are "UL fire rated" safes for paper documents, but those will destroy hard drives and those are pretty pricey.
Data storage safes have to be more expensive yet.
