The multiplayer component (IIRC, the maps) have been created by Splashdamage (www.splashdamage.com) : The people who allready brought us the great (free) game, Enemy Territory.
While i can agree with the form of the website, I can't agree with the information available :
If i compare this to VALVe's HL2, -alot- of (editing/modding) information is allready known about it , and alot of people (including myself) have started making assets for HL2 mods.
"id" , on the contrary, have released very few specs about their engine : On one hand I admire them for being so leet, to not be needing twenty interviews a day, like Gabe Newell had/has (and which backstabbed him once the source was stolen, and allready so much info was out there), but on the other hand would I love to know how much, for example, the mapping is gonna be the same as it was for Quake 3 / what modeling software might be optimal, etc.
I don't know who modded that +1 insightful, but I'm sure that person (let alone the parent poster) knows that Doom3 is a re-telling of Doom 1 (this time around with kick-ass graphics).
I sometimes encounter a same sort of 'problem' within online games : People on your team start talking a language, that im not able to understand :
While I can't force them to use english (im dutch myself) , i can always point them to -why- they could talk english (if they speak it) : eg. It is way better for your whole team to know what you are saying, so you can all work together.
If they don't want to speak/can't speak english, and they are adding noise to my other communication with my other teammates, i will mute/ignore them : The same should be applied here, as i think it's ridicilous when one of the few communities on the Web, purely by natural 'forces' (invites only) has turned out to become very popular amongst Portugese people , it's a bit dumb to whine afterwards.
Hell, what is so hard to filter (or just *drumroll* dont -read-) the stuff you don;t want ?
Btw, i got invited a few months ago to join Orkut, and i found it to be nothing amazing, and fairly quickly 'polluted' as the Net got more polluted with asshats over the years too.
but just to be sure :
http://follies.werewolves.org/ : For a very very entertaining look at the guy calling himself Derek Smart (in the end , he doesn't seem to be -THAT- smart )
But I have to mention Raven Software's attempt at random generated first person shooter maps in SoF2 : While very far from perfect, and limited to outdoor maps : it is a very good, and inovative thing they did (which got very unrecognised, imho).
As said, i did not read the book : But in my previous post, the word i meant with 'sarcastic' : was the 'social commentary' : Which i think was very well done within this movie.
"So I read this to find out whether or not it would drive me crazy. I learned nothing from this."
Nt enough info ? Read the last paragraph :
"It's worth seeing, especially if you 've already seen Spider-Man 2 at least once. It's a pretty good (though not great) movie."
In other words, having seen Spiderman 2 : this movie seems to be crap : Cgi- packed crap though
I have not read the book, but I think Starship Troopers was a very good movie, with very good balanced satire in between the CGI scenes : Am I the only one ?
How is it different from the book (i havent read it) ?
"The risk of being caught prompted the primary instigator to contact Newell. He admitted hacking into Valve's server, but denied any role in the theft, instead naming those responsible for distributing the stolen code. "We now had three independent ways of confirming this primary instigator and, through conversations with this individual, had convinced him to fly out to us in Seattle for a job interview"
I wonder how exactly they would have come onto this :
Scenario :
Gabe : 'Ok, well, im really pissed off you hacked our network, and released HL2 online... BUT.... you seriously look like a good coder... So how about working with us on HL3 ? uh ? uh ? '
"Even the famously tech-fetishist id Software has brought on a professional writer for the development of DOOM 3. As awesome as technologies like shading and Havok may be, they in and of themselves are not games."
I guess we have to do with someone very unimaginative, who is discarding lighting/gravity as a non-gameplay item.
Bontago (www.bontago.com) proves for once that gravity can be used for the gameplay, and not gimmicky-like as in , for example, Mac Payne 2.
For the lighting : I see plenty of options, since it's the cornerstone of most 3dengines (the shadows give something 'real ' depth) , ifnot our real lifes.
I can see how someone can make a stand that only graphics, or only a cool gravity engine, can't make a good game on itself : But there are plenty of examples that are/will be.
I hope they threw out the ready-room : where people have to get together, only to start a game from there : Instead of just joining games that are allready in progress.
The game reveneus aren't their biggest income anyways : it's the licensing of their engines : The Quake III engine license is still a sweet 100.000 bucks:o
The current )third party editors (such as GTKRadiant) will still make a release for Doom 3, despite the in-game editor.
Giving id's previous record of releasing tools which all lacked options/user friendlyness, i think this is a good move (Standard Radiant is pure hell to work with, compared to, for example, GTKRadiant.)
And I'm not too sure bout this, but I also think mappers don't have to compile their.map to.bsp , anymore ( a -very- timeconsuming process) as the data in the.map file will be generated in real time in the D3 engine : Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong.
Since there is going to be a tournament of Doom 3 on Quakecon, these scattered release dates kinda give an unfair advantages to the US competitors : IIRC QC starts at the 12th of Augusts, so people from mainland Europe, won't be able to play/practice it.:/
Yes, they -did- do it deliberately, for the reason exactly as you stated.
IIRC, Doom 3 will deploy the same tactic (only first person, and no cinematic cut scenes) : Dunno bout the voice : WHat would a space marine have to say anyways ?:D

Why don't you google it ? :D
And in dutch, phonetically, it means 'ear-cunt' :
Properly spelled it would have to be 'oorkut' though.

When you mentioned the Doom one, i vaguely remembered it, but good to see some names with it.
SOF2 = Soldier of Fortune 2 (for those who don't see this in the storm of abbreviations nowadays ;) )
but just to be sure : http://follies.werewolves.org/ : For a very very entertaining look at the guy calling himself Derek Smart (in the end , he doesn't seem to be -THAT- smart )

DAMNIT, now i spend actually thinking a second about Police Academy ! Damn you ! ;-)
Got to preview before i post : I meant 'social commentary' where i wrote 'satire' in my first post.
Guess i gotta go read that book ;)

The game will be capped at 60 FPS anyways : Not too hard to crank out with the current (top) video cards.
Wait , i gotta comment with something smart... er..
Wooyay, Doom III is near !
Hope they don't pull a VALVe on us ;-)

Ohwait ;)
