Doom 3 Web Site Now Operational

thrash242 writes "After much re-re-re-rechecking, the official Doom 3 site finally has some real content, instead of just 'Coming soon' - it also confirms the August 3rd ship date. Woohoo!"

      In the original Doom, the BFG was called the "Big F'n Gun"--straight from the manual. It's left up to the reader to determine the meaning of "F'n".

      But the term BF(ucking)G has been around at least since WWII, because I'm sure I remember someone using that term to describe a NAZI rail gun...

      When it comes to BFG, I use friggin' (preferably the whole "uuuh... friggin'" phrase) since that was on the help screens or in some other 'oficial' writing from Id. I understood it as a joke and I use it as a tradition.

      No, by posting something un-funny and un-interesting, you broke the code of the AC. For years, AC has been known as the go-to-guy on slashdot, for well rounded insights and side splitting jokes. On this day, you failed not only yourself but the entire AC community as well. That kind of shame cannot be carried lightly but must instead be met with the humble acceptance that can only be shown through ritual disembowelment.       whatever - not only does the splash screen have annoying audio on it - then the site insists on loading a window that is twice as large as the actual flash site AND plays another audio sample

      so since you have to open the second window, you will have 2 conflicting annoying audio samples AND a stupid popup flash window that is too large for the website now...

      yeah great flash site. how about we just BAN flash sites and beat their creators with big useability sticks?

      hopefully the game doesn't suck as much as the site.

      Too bad the flashcrap-part is the only content actually updated on the site, Mr. Smart.

      Their flash looks like crap on my system and as I usually get to see far too many ads and commercials working "correctly" here, I seriously doubt it's my machine that is to blame.

      The flash screen is misaligned on my screen, showing only the lower half of it, thereby missing most of the buttons and texts. Sound and flashy-flashy is still there but who cares if I can't fucking read anything there.

      Whatever, just call it "users fault", but I won't buy Doom3 anyway.

      The multiplayer is hardly more than a joke and playing against a computer-controlled enemy was boring long before always-on DSL and Cable, but now it's just laughable. Name one huge success for a singleplayer-only game in the last 3-4 years and you'll see the pattern. These were Max Payne, FarCry, Hitman, Splinter Cell and were all atmospheric-esoteric-adventurous egoshooters. And Doom3 is gonna break *records* eh? In what, genre repetition?

      I'm waiting for a convergence of realistic tactical shooters (aka America's Army), "multi-role-combat"-games (Battlefield 42 & nam), a strategic commanding interface (aka C&C series, only you're guiding the human players so they don't lose the goal in useless deathmatches) and all that inside a MMORPG world. Real combat, real-time, real strategic, "worldwide", always-on and interdependent - I'd even buy subscriptions for that and no I'm not retarded enough to consider joining the US Army anytime soon. "War is evil, but the sound is cool!" - who says online roleplaying games must always stay on the beaten meme of bows, arrows & magic. Who says we can't buy tanks, helicopters & armaments instead of castles, platemails, longswords and battle horses?

      Have you tried World War 2 online? It got mixed reviews when it came out, but it's supposed to be a lot better now.

      As for Doom3, well it's supposed to be scary - but really I think the big hype is more a resuly of Carmack's new engine - Quake 3 is STILL being used in major games today (Call of Duty) so Doom 3 promises to make some pretty advances for 3rd party licensors in the future.

      all dooms and quakes are id graphics engines demos. tahts all. in doom3 again we must search stupid keys for stupid doors blah blah... and this time there will be even STORYLINE! and now with 1000x times more scaryer polygons!

      really interesting games will come later (just like with doom and quake). on doom3 engine ...

      Funny, I was thinking something similar, except that playing against an online enemy was annoying long before always-on DSL and Cable, but now it's just laughable.

      Different people have different video game interests. I don't feel like dealing with a bunch of annoying people that either cheat, or claim I cheat, complain when I win, or complain when I lose. Even though I play some multiplayer with people I know at work, my main interest is in the single player games, some of the better ones being the ones that you listed, like Max Payne, FarCry, etc. These games seem to be making money, so there must be others that like them too.

      Yes, there certainly isn't enough changes to worth posting a Slashdot story about this. It still has the same desktops, only one of which I downloaded last January.

      Please, wake me up when there is something actaully worth seeing. I looked at the site last week and it certainly hasn't changed since then.

      don't be that happy just yet, the linux release is scheduled AFTER the windows release, and the mac release is scheduled "when it's done". so if you are running linux or mac (like me), you might want to consider not holding your breath.

      id wanted to do a remake of the original DooM with new technology, and part of the charm of the original DooM was its completely nonsense storyline: you get teleported to hell, kill kill kill.

      Without this, it wouldn't be DooM anymore, it would be Daikatana or some other shit like that, leave DOOM ALONE, YOU NOOOOOB! :)

      I don't remember my sound being turned down/off either. I don't remember one english word in the game either. Please correct me if I am wrong because it has been a long time and many games have gone under my bridge.

      I think they had them at the end of each episode, something along the lines of : "You have finally reached the end of the Gateway to Hell and killed the vicious Cyberdemon who controlled it. Yet you know your quest is not done, as the Demons of Hell have already crossed into Earth. You lace up your shoes and pick up your Rocket Launcher, ready to wade Knee Deep in the Dead." Each character came up in that thick red font they used for pausing and un-pausing the game, and every character was aurally punctuated with a pistol sound.

      Yeah, not quite Shakespeare, but hopefully Doom3 will improve on it.

      Wow, is the emulation ability really that efficient? I always thought that using a mac -> pc emulator would make gaming nearly impossible. Then again, as a PC-only owner I haven't actually tried it either.

      Ahhh for the ones who don't know their history. This is the same story as the original Doom, which predates Half Life by a number of years. You were probably not one of the individuals playing Doom of a low end 486 in the dark and jumping out of your skin when something came around the corner. Personally, I have been awaiting this title patiently for quite sometime. No game since has scared me out of whits like the original Doom did. Here's to hoping Caramack and company did the same thing with this one.

      Try playing Aliens VS Predator 2, as marine, in the dark, with complete silence other than you 5.1 sound system.

      I agree tho, that the original doom was one of the scariest games I ever played. When I was young I never played it without cheats and fullbright cuz it was too scary for me. Later I played the OpenGL vers and it was still hella freaky, but not as scary.

      Heh I just want enough modes to rival UT2004. I don't know how regular single player with the addition of team deathmatch will keep me addicted for months on.

      Look at UT2004 there are 10 modes of plays. Doom III won't even come close. I am not complaining, just stating the fact.

      Really? Films are even more stupid than (the plots of) computer games. And I'd hardly describe the sort of music I listen to as mainstream - it's practically never even mentioned on the radio and tv. Perhaps they play Zappa, Boulez, Nancarrow, Berg, Messiaen, Gurtu, Whitehouse, Mr Bungle and Negativland more on the radio where you live?

      Modes of play are useless to me. Straight deathmatch and team deathmatch built around a solid set of weapons is all I ever want. Modes of play are for casual gamers looking for the next nifty fad to keep them interested until the next spiffy looking game. Me, I prefer a solid quality experience without all the extra frills...

      Well, you obviously didn't read the manuals or the between-episode text then.

      Doom 1 was about the UAC's bases on Mars accidentally opening a portal to hell. You even went to hell and fought the boss. Doom 2 was about your return to Earth, only to find that hell came with you and has taken over.

      You fight a giant pseudo-Satan in the wall at the end of that one. Still the freakiest boss ever.

      I always find it funny when people disappointingly describe the similarities between Doom 3 and Half-Life's storylines, when meanwhile people who played Half-Life back in 1998 were commenting on how it took from Doom way back in 1994. Oh, well, some people will always choose to remain ignorant.

      I disagree. Granted Doom's plot wasn't in depth, you got a small story screen after every episode or number of levels in Doom II and Final Doom, but you did indeed have a story to work off.

      I expect Doom 3 will have the plot more inline with the game, especially at first, since the invasion is supposed to happen at the begining of the game, but after the smoke clears, it will probably be more like Quake 2's plot - Get a mission, probably say a thing or 2 and then go on a kill-crazy rampage of brutal, nightmare death.

      Fun for the whole family.
      Unfortunately, I won't actually be able to find out for another 2 years, since that's how long I expect my current computer to last, and it doesn't come very close to the minimum specs. *sigh*

      You should give System Shock 2 a try (a well-known Looking Glass title, from a little before their demise). I'm playing it again for the forth or fifth time, as it has great replayability value. The first time through (played in the dark, and such) it was very effective at making me jump and, to an extent, it still can.

      I've been playing Q3 off and on for what, now, 5 years? since it came out? and all I ever play is DM. I hate all the other games out there that i've seen. Most of the mods that people make suck, capture the flag sucks, team play sucks. :)

      I think the Aliens TC for Doom was the scariest thing I've ever seen. Played it for over two hours, without killing anything, and still damn near wet myself.

      I couldn't agree more. I remember playing this when it first came out, until around 2 am one morning before finally having to stop. Before I went to bed, I went down to the kitchen to grab a drink.

      Our kitchen has a glass back door, letting out onto the patio and garden; pitch dark outside, I couldn't get the thought out of my mind that a hybrid would come smashing through the door any second, moaning "Silence the discord..."

      No game has creeped me out as much, before or since.

      Exactly, ID must have realized as I have that HL was not really that good a game - it just appealed to gamers sense of an alternate ego...
      Im sure Doom 3 will too.

      Also, this confirms for me that HL2 really will not live up to the hype. It won't be much better than Doom 3 if its even as good!!.

      I think Valve really missed that train. HL2 had the chance to be groundbreaking, but instead Doom 3 will. Watch out for HL2 and of course Stalker too. Especially Stalker, that could be an amazing game.

      Yes it will be out after the Windows version. The gaming market is ruled by Windows. But it will sure come.
      It didn't take so long for the linux clients of Q1, Q2, Q3, RtCW, RtCW:ET to come out after the windows releases and they were surely released, and so will Doom3. Not only that, but the Q1 and Q2 complete source code was also released under the GPL.
      Would you rather they completely ignore the other systems, like most game companies?
      It's very good that there's a pretty huge player in the 3D gaming world that actually states that the linux/mac versions are planned and not just "if we will feel like it, we'll see if we can hack up some linux version".

      Incidentally; Doom is set on Phobos, but the gravity there is negligible. Is this reflected in the game physics, with stuff taking forever to fall, or is it just dismissed and gravity treated as earth-normal?

      Of course, this could be explained by the station having artificial gravity of some kind, but it would be interesting.

      I feel the same way about Doom and have the same hopes for Doom 3, but your missing out on a game that was creepier than Doom - System Shock 2. That was a game which could stop your heart. I picked it up on recommendation from a friend. It was the first game I played that really used good surround sound on my shiny new Aureal soundcard and 4+1 speaker setup.

      Playing that game in the dark with surround sound will definately give you the heebee-jeebees.. *shudder*

      Eh? HL was probably the bestest game evar. Don't let the tripe that is CS dilute it... It opened up a new deminsion of game play unlike anything since Duke Nukem. It had a pretty good story line--that at least made sense--and it drew me, and many other people into the game. It also had some pretty scary moments; those stupid crabs scared the shit out of me the first time I played throught it. They really did quite alot to push your panic nerves. and I for one loved that game.

      I don't think any other game has done what Doom did with the monsters, and that's what made them scary. Doom had a nice, dark atmosphere, but initially the monsters were fairly tame. You could sit in front of a zombie and let it shoot its handgun at you for a while before you'd die (he'd miss a lot, and the damage wasn't too great). So most of the time you could handle the monsters. Even the harder monsters didn't take too much effort to kill (imps and pig demons). But there were some monsters that were very deadly, and big, and you knew them by sound. For me, hearing the roar of some of the demons, and knowing something was out there that could kill me, was scary.

      Games now seem to be that everything can kill you, because it's realistic. Peon with a hand-gun - lucky shot to the head - your a dead sucker. Then everything is deadly, so the feeling of intrepidation wears off.

      This doesn't mean you could just walk around in doom. Monsters could be deadly if there were enough of them, or if you were dumped into a bad situation.

      The other thing that set the atmosphere was the monster noises after they had been alerted to your presence. If they heard you, you could hear them no matter where you were.

      It seems that my humble remark generated so much buzz that I simply have to left this last remark. I had played every id game, starting with Wolf on some old 286 and then Doom, Doom2 (on customly overclocked 386sx - I had to replace its XO), Quake, Quake2 (on nice SGI machine) and Quake3. None of this games was as much fun as HL1 (and HL1 is a direct discendant of Quake2 - but with much face lifting and great story).

      Actually, Half Life used the Quake ONE engine, not Quake 2. Ofcourse, it was heavily modified by Valve, but it's still the Quake engine.

      I'm currently living in the UK for work, and decided to pick up some windows games for my work laptop while I'm here... while browsing through the bargin bin for games that would run on this underpowered machine, I saw (for ten pounds) a re-release of the original doom games - Ultimate Doom, Final Doom and Doom 2 all on one CD.

      (NB. - do not do this if you are trying to be productive - it's almost as adictive this time around, espcially in my 3D hardware deprived mood)

      What was interesting was that a second CD came with the game with a bunch of Doom 3 promo stuff - and although I haven't checked the site in its entirity, it looks like the whole web site is on this promo CD. So I actually got to see all this stuff a couple of weeks ago... I'd feel special, but it's not that great in content, and I'll just be much happier when I get the actual game going on my machine back home :)

      With active desktop, you can place any web site on your desktop (and then maximize it to make it effectively wallpaper). It's been in there since Windows 98 or 98SE (or maybe it came as part of IE 4...I don't recall).

      Go into desktop properties
      Click on the "Web" tab
      Check "Show web content on my active desktop"
      Click "New"
      Enter the URL you want to show up on your desktop and click OK.
      In the listbox, check only those items you want to appear on your desktop (you can have more than one).
      Go back to your desktop and put your cursor near the top of the active desktop window. A caption bar will appear. Click the maximize button.

      Actually I sometimes design web sites when I am not concentrating on the server stuff. The high levels of skills I developed have enabled me to recognise that when a product is not yet released, and the details are not yet set in stone and they have a bright shiny button that says pre-order on the main page (even thought I dont have flash installed on firefox I can see this) staring me in the face, I know there will be some useful information there, like many of the things the original poster wanted. So the doom people have actually done a good job on the marketing and information fronts.

      If this is their idea of doing their job, then I would fire them. Its a few weeks till launch and all we have on the official website, is 3 wallpapers, some screenshots and a single demo movie (quite pretty), and a pre-order link.

      Now is the time that D3 should be getting hyped, and being shoved down out throats at every opportunity. The official website should be a showcase for the game, getting us revved up and excited for its release, giving us the lowdown on everything that anyone would wan't to know. It certainly doesn't live up to my exepectations on what an official website should be.

      Perhaps, they are relying on other websites to do their job for them, or are just trading on the id and Doom 3 name knowing that its just going to be selling like hotcakes anyway. But at the end of the day, at this point in D3 development I think the website should be more than this.

      Yeah, maybe most gamers will go there and drool over the eye candy (which I couldn't even get to work correctly, in Mozilla, and gave up after my third click). But some of us (who will still pay them real money to buy their product) don't want pretty pictures, we want a game, we want a price, we want suggested system specs.

      With the amount of time it must have taken to create that Flash abomination, would it have hurt their schedule so much more to have a few HTML-only pages containing actual information?

      Ummm, goto http://doom3.com right on the frontpage there is a button for pre-ordering. Along with the date of release. That takes care of finding out the price.

      ID hasn't even released any specs so those'll be hard to find them at the moment.

      So I don't see what the point is about complaining about the flash, there's nothing other than hype in the flash section so why damn the entire site? No I take that back, there's a list of links to doom3 fan sites etc. But I think if you could google for those.

      IDsoftware.com says that the site is going to be updated as possible. The parent I replied to bitched about the site as if it served no purpose because it used flash.

      While the lack of system specs is a bit annoying, it's not the site's design at fault.

      While i can agree with the form of the website, I can't agree with the information available :

      If i compare this to VALVe's HL2, -alot- of (editing/modding) information is allready known about it , and alot of people (including myself) have started making assets for HL2 mods.

      "id" , on the contrary, have released very few specs about their engine : On one hand I admire them for being so leet, to not be needing twenty interviews a day, like Gabe Newell had/has (and which backstabbed him once the source was stolen, and allready so much info was out there), but on the other hand would I love to know how much, for example, the mapping is gonna be the same as it was for Quake 3 / what modeling software might be optimal, etc.

      Love them or loathe them, Bungie seem pretty good at that PR thing.       Too true. I'm on a 56k connection and gave up on the site after it flooded the modem for minute after minute after minute. Even the average ADSL connection would take some time to down this monster website. Why doesn't ID just put the damn thing in a zip archive? Because that's what they're doing by making us download the entire site at once in a flash movie.

      This has not encouraged me to buy the game.

      One of the many products that I sell is dsl and cable internet service. You would be quite surprised at the number of people who I see every day that cannot tell the difference between their 33-50kbps dialup speed, and a 1-4mbps high speed connection. They actually cannot tell. Not even when those two connections are compared. For anything but movies, pretty much. And the answer about the movies "well, it doesn't matter if it takes longer."

      Well, the point of the story is that there now *more* than that on the site now.

      For certain games or movies, sometimes having too much info available isn't a good thing. It keeps things suspenseful to keep things somewhat quiet. I wouldn't want to see info about every weapon, every enemy, all the bosses, all the levels, etc. It would ruin the mystery and fear that's supposed to go along with this game.

    Supported cards:
    GF 4 MX.
    GF 3.
    GF 4.
    GF FX (and higher).
    Radeon 8500s, 9000s and higher.

    They themselves recommend:
    2Ghz CPU.
    512MB RAM.
    Radeon 9800.
    5-channel sound card and speakers.

      There was some very poor thought put into those system specifications. An Intel Pentium IV at 1.5GHz is about the same speed as an Athlon or Pentium III at 1GHz. There'll be alot of people who'll mistakenly think their computer is too slow.

      There's also a vast performance difference on Pentium IV systems between SD ram & DDR ram. A SD ram based PIV system probably won't run DoomIII.

      I probably sound pedantic, and although system requirements are always value, what they've got down is simply meaningless.

      This is complete bullshit, seeing as though I played the beta 2 on a crappy-ass Dell Pentium III 800 MHz with a GeForce2 GTS. My framerate was anywhere between 10~30 fps depending on the situation, so anyone with a decent processor and GeForce4MX should be FINE.

      In fact, the other day I was looking around the planet doom forums and saw a post where a guy was getting decent (30~60) framerates with a 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 on a top end Athlon. This game is clearly more CPU dependent than anything, your choice is just how much glitter from your video card do you want to play with.

      It just amazes me how moronic gamers are when it comes to hardware.

      Not everything is about fps... 30 fps on a voodoo 5 is not the same as 30 fps on a 9800 card....

      It might run, but might be a different game. The later Cards allow for more details in textures, cinimatic effects, bumpmapping and lighting...

      Seriously, very bad web design. It's a great example of rude web site design. The browser takes over the entire screen and on every page, and bloated Flash are used when not needed (the same pages could've been designed in DHTML), each page takes way too long to load for nothing but text content. I have on a cable modem w/ 3Ghz CPU and 1GB RAM and this web site is almost unbrowsable.

      Personally, I kind of liked the website. When viewing a game website I expect a little bit more than just a bulleted list of system specs and game features.

      It loaded fine in firefox 0.9.2 for me, and my DSL connection kept up with it very easily.

      I think sometimes it's ok to have a creative and "out-there" website to give the viewer a certain feel for what they are viewing.

    Hmm, in Firefox on XP I seem to remember a little red X in the top right hand corner. I clicked it and voila! the site went away. I thought hmmm, maybe in other browsers? So I tried it in Safari on my Mac and no little red X but I had a little red dot on the top left. A little command+W and the site was gone. Perplexed I booted into FC2 and tried Mozill and once again was presented with an X to close the window thus dismissing the site.       I think Doom was a simul-release, and Quake demo came out only a few days before the full..

    According to Todd Hollenshead's plan file : Mac and Linux: Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games. More remains to be done for the OSX version of DOOM 3 and that will take some time. We won't release the OSX version until it's just as polished as the PC version. I'll never forget how cool it was getting the connection to finally take and there we were, two guys on the opposite side of town hunting each other down in the hallowed halls of Doom. It blew my dad's mind - he had no idea such a thing was possible with his computer... That game will always have a special place in this geek's heart... Bring on Doom III!

      I remember Doom taking out our networks. For some reason it broadcast every packet to all other computers on the network. I still have a Qic-120 tape backup in my closet with all the versions of Doom that ever floated through my college. 0.666 even. That and lots of Epic games.

      Now if only I had a tape backup unit that would read these huge old tapes. 30 Complete games in 100 megabytes. And we liked it!

      We did the null-modem serial cable thing. The fact that you could play cooperatively was great.

      In college our dorms had just gotten ethernet, and we played multiplayer Doom2 constantly. Luckily I had moved out of the dorms (and thus lost my ethernet) by the time Quake came out or I would've failed all my classes.

      Interestingly, Alienware is planning a dual-Xeon gaming system, with two PCI-Express video cards: one rendering the top half of the screen, the other rendering the bottom half.

      Since they chose a dual-Xeon setup, I would assume such a setup is either a good choice for gaming or just sounds pretty to the marketing department. That said, Intel will soon begin to put out dual-core CPUS, so some of the game programmers out there are probably contemplating games designed around a dual-CPU core setup, rather than mere hyperthreading.

Of course that doesn't keep the idiots from PC Gamer stating that "So long as you have a GeForce 4MX card, you should be able to play Doom 3 with many of its bells and whistles at a decent clip." Sure, and there are WMD in Iraq...

    I can't wait till Doom 3 goes retail and the Id forums are overloaded with users running 2.0GHz Celerons with Geforce 4mx's asking why they can't run it at anything other then 640x480 with everything turned off or set to low.

      And don't forget the people running nitrogen-cooled 5GHz Pentium 4 Xeons with a Radeon 9700 Pro overclocked 3x, complaining because the game is simply unplayable as they only get 150fps when 100 bots are crammed into one room destroying each other.

      Seriously, this is nothing new. There will always be people who bitch that the game is "unplayable" regardless of what hardware they have. They will pounce in swarms upon the forums and let it be known that the company are a bunch of assholes and they want their money back from those scam artists. And of course they tried turning on setting XYZ, but for a game they spent SO MUCH MONEY on, they shouldn't have to, damnit!

      Anyway, how do you know how Doom 3 is going to run on given hardware? Let me guess, you're using the leaked tech demo. 'nuff said. There have already been so many holes punched through the theory that the tech demo will be indicative of performance that I don't feel the need to repeat them here. Besides, speeds that are completely unacceptable to you may be perfectly fine to many people, whiners not withstanding.

      I had heard something about at least one member of Tool and/or A Perfect Circle helping out in addition to Trent Reznor. I tried to find more information on the website, but it's not rendering correctly with my (official) Flash plug-in and I doubt there's more information anyway. I can't find any substantiation for this rumor on any Tool or A Perfect Circle fan sites. Oddly enough the music may just be the number one reason I buy a copy of the game ;).

    Those aren't screenshots, those are postage stamps!

    The images are only 474x373 pixels, which is far from awe-inspiring on my 1600x1200 19" CRT. I'd imagine that's not the reaction that the marketing folks were looking for.

    Where did they hire these web designers from? 1995? The whole website seems like it was designed only to be viewed on a 640x480 15" monitor.

      From your own link Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games. I'm pretty sure the way this works is you buy and install the regular Windows version and run it with the help of the Linux binaries. I remember reading something about UT2K4 being done like that, but I could be wrong I don't buy games (or play them really). The linux binaries might let you install the game itself or you might be able to use Wine. All and this means that there should be no need to reboot to Windows if you are willing to wait a bit for the Linux binaries to come out.... and considering you probably won't get your hands on the first batch that omes out this should be no problem.
