"Fourty or fifty years down the line I bet our kids look back on doom as the Model T of PC gaming."
If you read some of the comments in this thread, I wonder how much people will remember of it :
For myself, I will always remember Doom, but even more, Quake 1.
As much as Doom rocked my socks off, Quake did a ten times better job at it and I'm still playing that game weekly.
Damn, I'm looking forward to Doom3:)
They still haven't scooped up the Desert Combat team though : Allthough I agree pirates (ifnot zombie pirates !) rock tenfold over real life war conversions;)
"It's the tragedy of the modern arcade industry. Pac-Man gets replace with Ms. Pac-man. Cruis'n World replaced with Cruis'n Exotica. And most arcade games now only seperate themselves from the home console due to non-standard interfaces. "
Or worse, as in my country, the Netherlands : The arcades totally disappear, and get replaced by gambling halls.
As written in another post by me in this thread : there was nothing better as getting tips from people while playing a game : Or trying to decipher 'how the f*ck that weird asian guy that always pulled off the craziest shit , did it':)
I always have to hold myself from chuckling a bit when i see the people 'dancing' on those DDR machines : Mind you, I'm not judging them for it to be 'wrong' : Hell, if thousands of people are enjoying it, there must be some fun in it.
I just find it very amusing to see some kid (better yet, adult) jump on one of those things, pretending to be dancing:) (and some people are real 'freaks' with those things:) )
One of the things that I noticed is that the DDr community (or at least the people i see playing) all love to share their tips/moves : And that brings back of the good ol' days when people in those same arcades told me how to 'get loads of money with Wonderboy in Monsterland' (jiggling and whirlwinds uh;) )
I was getting worried for a second that Doom 3 related news wasn't going to be on Slashdot today...
I'm so lucky;)
On a more serious note : Hearing that 8 players would 'best be played on LAN's' makes me a bit worried if the D3 engine , if stripped down of all the eyecandy (that's most likely prohibiting more players at the moment) , will still be able to have games with the current Q3/RTCW engine maximum (64 players, iirc).
I remember playing Oni, an otherwise great game (well, it entertAINED ME;) ) : but the camera angles could get really annoying, ifnot plain spilling the fun of the game.
Sometimes it would 'see through' the wall(when standing with your back towards it) and you would unwillingly get valuable information of how many enemies were in the next room.
"
And why on earth should it even be possible for there to be any text on any computer system which cannot be selected? More importantly, why should that be the designer's decision, rather than mine?"
There's no possibility to select images either : As in ,.gif-text-buttons, can't be selected.
I think the decision in the end lies (sp?) with you : If you don't like how the designer did his design, and is disturbing how you can optimally do your work : You stop visiting those sites.
"Um, apparently the part where "we" never started looking for any such thing in the first place? Why should your mouse-only browser and my text browser and my blind friend's browser and my colorblind friend's browser and my five-year-old PDA's browser be "uniform"? The whole sodding point of HTML was to have formatting be a set of loose suggestions, and allow the displaying system to adapt that to its capabilities and the user's preferences."
I was more looking at it in the context of how we want the different browsers around to be able to render the same page in the same way : But you defenitely have a point related to HTML having to be displayed in 'different' ways, for different persons/hardware.
Btw, re-read my first post, and it wasn't meant as hostile as it seemed to be:P
They improved -alot- over the years in their GUI design : Allthough I can see where you are coming from, having to do take the long way around sometimes, whereas shorter routes are possible : Then again, I have this with about every software tool I am currently using (Photoshop, 3DS Max, hell, even Note/Wordpad;) !)
"Microscopic text (zoom is worthless here, fixed size page layout) and irritating animation is supposed to be an example of good use of Flash?"
Irritating animation , nope, that's no good example of Flash : Trying to add to one's experience of going to a certain website (for instance , a game site) is better achieved with Flash, than with a clean html site with some cool MIDI song underneath it:P
"The text also can't be copied and pasted"
Depends on what kind of text the designer uses : It is perfectly possible to have text selections within Flash documents.
"Web pages are not supposed to look the same in all browsers"
Ohwait, now we -aren't- looking for uniformity in browsers anymore ? What did I miss ?
", and individual pages within the Flash can't be bookmarked"
Again, this would be a design choice of the webdesigner.
"This site only illustrates why Flash sucks so bad."
Then why haven't you started using some sort of Flashblock extension yet ?
(i see where you are coming from : I block my own flashmovies with firefox though : That said:)
Besides thinking of the flash contributing to usabilities/importances to sites : I also don't think you should underestimate how much of an impact the releases of Flash had on the amateur cartoon makers and other visual artists.
Stuff that first would have taken weeks for an animator to do, now can be done (fairly easy) within hours in Flash.
Im a hardware noob : Could you explain this one a bit to me ?
My own explanation I give to your statement, is that RAM is being used for temporal storing of data : When there wouldn't be enough RAM in the machine, it would use the harddrive more for temporal storage (thus 'damaging' it more).
I think Half-life proves you wrong on this point : Besides the multiple mods out there, which most likely also attracted people to buy Half-Life, in the start , it was most defenitely the kick-ass story line that made most people either advise it to their friends, or buy it themselves.
If you haven't yet, and you still searching for a game with somewhat more of a story to it, try Half-Life (better yet, wait for HL to be released for free on the HL2 Source engine).
The plans after RTCW was to bring a cheapish add-on pack, with both single player, AND multi player content : Done by two studios:
Maddoc doing the single player part;
Splashdamage doing the multiplayer part.
Only because the SINGLE PLAYER part did not live up to the expectations, they decided to can the project : Leavind SD with a finished, ifnot excellent MP project, they could not release.
Only because the kick-ass decision made by id and prolly Activision, they decided to release this Multiplayer part for free.
Up to today, this game is one of the best played multiplayer games (!) on the Net.
The game has been embraced by the FPS community, and on top of that, the source of the game has also been released : Making it possible for countless of mod-makers, to create a mod that EVERYONE with an internet connection can play, for FREE.
And even now, people working on mods/maps for ET, get daily help by the developers/mappers of Splashdamage.
Next time do a little research before you comment bullshit like this....
On a last note.. : I also wouldn't mind mentioning that Splashdamage ALSO did the multiplayer component of Doom 3.

3 and 5 are the same ? :D
They still haven't scooped up the Desert Combat team though : Allthough I agree pirates (ifnot zombie pirates !) rock tenfold over real life war conversions ;)
One of the things that put me off Star Wars : THe phantom menace, was those 'celebrities' playing roles, that totally f*cked over the Universe.
Come on, Samuel L. Jackson as one of the wise guys... Seriously...
at least Tyler Durden didn't insert -his- , er, *cough* message.
Or worse, as in my country, the Netherlands : The arcades totally disappear, and get replaced by gambling halls.

Ohwait, this is Slashdot.
Raven Software is currently developing Quake 4, and id's plans are to make a non IP game.
Lol, damn, i gotta take an Net-break here : I read 'Mod Paris Hilton'... *sigh*
Sometimes it would 'see through' the wall(when standing with your back towards it) and you would unwillingly get valuable information of how many enemies were in the next room.
Then why you asking this question as an AC ?
Cool, thanks for that extensive explanation :)

Am I right ?
I use 0.9.2 and I have no problems (besides the strange 503 error most of last night).
If you haven't yet, and you still searching for a game with somewhat more of a story to it, try Half-Life (better yet, wait for HL to be released for free on the HL2 Source engine).
From what I know now , I would have bought ET if it would have been packaged (for a slightly lower price than a full package)

*grumble* Thanks Jolt for the UK only download servers :/
