Saying that it's the cheapest HD-DVD player because you can hack it to work with a PC running Windows XP is as stupid as saying it's the cheapest HD-DVD player because you only have to connect it to your Xbox 360.

And buying a more expensive PC simply to play games on it is better how? Not to mention all the usual Windows problems that goes with it? Service Pack 2 or not, there's always new holes being discovered and you'll never been 100% safe (or, in the case of Windows, even 50% safe I guess).

I'd rather use consoles to play games, thanks. And with the Wii coming up, it might even beat the old keyboard+mouse combo for some games. As for "PC games", well, there's the Xbox 360.

    1. Linux is free and ready for the desktop, drop Windows/Mac OS X already!
    2. Linux is ours, if you can't use it then use Windows/Mac OS X already.

The article was targeted at point of view #1, my comment was that point of view #1 is simply not true and your opinion is point of view #2. The two of us simply can't argue because we don't even believe in the same basic target users for Linux. Now stop complaining, I'm aware of people in group #2 and IMHO group #2 is simply a bunch of snob technophile elitists, just like a large % of Mac OS X users are simply snob rich elitists (which I'm not).

I am confused with how you can say that PS2 was the weakest console of the last generation.
I meant hardware-wise, not marketshare-wise. Of course, the PS2 was the best-selling console, but the hardware was seriously lacking, even when compared to the Gamecube.

As for the controller, I really hate the PS1/PS2 gamepad. It's hard to get a real grip on it, unlike the Xbox or the Gamecube. IMHO the Gamecube has the best grip/comfort of all the gamepads I've ever used (and that ranges from the NES to the Xbox 360, including the Jaguar, Saturn, etc).

I also can't wait to try that Wiimote in less than 3 weeks. :D

I suggest if you want the experience of a last gen console that you should just buy one and save yourself a lot of money.
The thing is, I own a Gamecube, an Xbox and now an Xbox 360. Frankly, the Xbox 360 is really only an "Xbox 1.5" too (or Xbox 2 at best, but not the stupid marketing crap of "10 times more powerful" we've heard before), just like the Wii is a "Gamecube 1.5" (but finally with something that might make Metroid Prime one of the best console game ever, if only for the controls). Both machines offer better visuals than their predecessor, but not by that much.

The PS3, on the other hand, only had to beat the PS2, the weakest console of the last gen. Not that hard to do, especially with Sony throwing everything it can into the PS3.

As for which console is "the best", it doesn't matter. I've played the trial of "Dead Rising", and frankly it's a POS. Sure it looks nice (though I'm wondering why the first Xbox couldn't do almost exactly the same), but it's still the same old game style as 10 or even 20 years ago, in 3D. Woopedidoo. I don't get what the hype is all about. Maybe teens only want to play games where you shoot and kill everything.

    - the Wii is 2-3 times more powerful than a Gamecube while at the same time requires half or a third of the power
    - the Nintendo DS can play for hours and hours on a single charge, not really so with the PSP

More expensive = more heat, more power required, less battery life (if applicable)?

What good is HD graphics if you have to keep the same quality per pixel as the last gen? I'd rather stay in normal definition and get a better picture. We're still very, VERY far away from real-life visuals. Pushing pixels only makes crappy graphics look less pixelated.

I use Firefox on a G3 700MHz iBook. Starting it up takes some time... but the obvious solution to that is to never exit the program (which is how you're supposed to use a Mac anyway). Once open, it's as fast as any other browser.
Why is that "how I'm supposed to use a Mac anyway"? Open programs take memory, I don't see how keeping them open while you don't use them makes any sense at all. Also what I meant was that Firefox is dog-slow while using it, not only when starting it up. It scrolls pages like molasses, it feels cludgy, etc. I don't like it at all.

Safari is pretty, but I can't stand browsing without Adblock and Flashblock. Besides, having a close button on each tab is just stupid IMO. Easy to fix on Firefox, impossible to fix on Safari.
Easy to fix on Firefox, no sir. Unless messing about with XML and javascript is your idea of "easy", which is out of reach of normal users. As for the adblock and flashblock, disabling pop-ups and plug-ins takes care of the most annoying ads.

Okay, so Leopard will probably also be 129$ (like all other versions). That still makes the Mac mini, with Leopard, only 200$ more than Vista Ultimate. And a lot of people are going to need at least 200$ worth of upgrades simply to be able to run Vista comfortably.
