limit the number of story submissions per user/IP/submitter_nickname. For example to 1 submission per 24h (or 48h). After clicking "submit" button, the information displayed would be: Thank you for your submission, your next submission will be possible within 24 hours.

    - You will get less submissions (more unique submissions!) and,
    - their quality will be higher (spammer submitters will have to choose carefully the best one, instead of submitting ten stories).
    - nontypical stories (eg. about crazy case-mod, or linux on a hair-dryer) will not get hurt, since those stories are submitted by people who tend to submit one story per month, not one story per day.

    it's a win-win.

  7. Re:A simple suggestion: on On the Matter of Slashdot Story Selection · · Score: 1

Institute a cap on the total number of stories a given submitter can get accepted (per day, week, month...whatever). A cap doesn't hurt legitimate submitters, while limiting the payoff for linkwhores.

    Agreed.

Let's assume that I'm just an average slashdotter. I regularly get modpoints (about each two weeks), and I have just enough time to spend only 2 or 3 of them before they expire. I submit stories only, when I really, really think that they are worth it. The story appears, but my submission gets rejected, my last accepted submission was 2 years ago. And I submit stories about once per three or four months.

So assuming that I'm an average (not a journalist kind of type who seeks for stories all the time), IMHO I think that a limit of, say - one story per 24h (or 48h) from single user/IP/submitter_name should be just enough.

But I'm not talking about a limit of accepted stories. I'm talking about a limit of submitted stories. When someone clicks button "submit" there should appear an information: Your story has been submitted, your next submission will be possible within next 24 (48) hours, thank you.

Of course people can try to work around that, using different IPs, but can * Beatles Beatles * use a different nick? I doubt. He would appear then as someone else. So better he will choose his story to submit very (very!) carefully. And you, CmdrTaco, will see only one story from him. That one he thinks is the best one. Your job is easier, because you have less stories to choose from, and stories quality gets better! Because people are more careful to choose the best story possible.

It's a win-win solution. I'm sure that after that the amount of Roland's and BB's stories will dramatically decrease, while their quality will increase. And also - after today's discussion people will stop complaining.

  14. sad news for india on Microsoft to Invest $1.7 billion in India · · Score: 1

Personally I think that this investment is doomed. That is because m$ business strategy simply does not fit with indian people philosophy. They belive in sharing knowledge (and software), those people are philosophically much closer to OSS ideas. That's why piracy is so widespread in asiatic regions - people simply do not agree that something must be paid for more than once, especially knowledge (which they belive is only worth sharing for free). Of course m$ can make there a big outpost, pay people huge amounts of money to get it running. But people will be unhappy and complain about m$'s strategy. And sooner or later it will all collapse.

my bet is that m$ knows all that what I've said. And they siply want to try to kill their philosophy before OSS will grow there strong enough to fully embrace it (and people there - I mean all the folks, not just IT people). This is sad news, as we will be observers of OSS vs. m$ fight on yet another front.

  19. uptime and maintience on Windows vs. Linux Study Author Replies · · Score: 1

I've seen several posts where people were criticizing the solution chosen by those 'linux experts'. Whether they are experts or not - is a matter of different subject. I think that we should look at the broader picture. And instead of talking about replacing glibc we should talk about the study's conclusion, not how they reached this conclusion.

Ok, so they have chosen to replace glibc, perhaps in their circumstances they couldn't see any other applicable solution. I'm a true linux zealot, I've thrown windows away 5 years ago, and I do the same with computers of my friends and family. And during that time I learned a lot. For instance I've learned that each problem has dozens of solutions, and when I approach each problem for the first time - I do not choose the best solution possible. But I do after solving that same problem several times - because I learn how to do that.

The bottomline is that collective knowledge of all /. readers is far greater than knowledge of single linux administrator. And what he does can be criticized by others. He did the best he could when he approached that specific problem for the first time.

Another bottomline is that even skilled linux administrator - when meets a new kind of problem - will not choose the optimal solution, and most of the time he will spend on it - will be learning stuff, reading man and googling.

to summarize, I'll repeat my other post - I can belive that setting up a linux sever can take longer time than setting up a windows server doing the same.

But such conclusion from a study means nothing, since everybody will agree that UPTIME of linux server, and its need for MAINTIENCE will score far better than windows server doing the same.

And that's the only reason for which I think that this study is totally useless.
    1. I agree that setting a linux server takes more time
    2. But 1. is irrevelant because it's the uptime, and maintience for years, that really counts.

Dear Dr. Herb Thompson - tell me if you plan to study how linux vs. windows score in "uptime and maintince" in real corporate environment. I think that this test should be at least 1 year long.
