hey actually it really happened to me, so that's why I posted that because I thought it's funny in current context. And honestly I didn't know it's "an old joke":)
so in debian a package kernel-image*.deb was renamed to linux-kernel*.deb just so that packages netbsd-kernel*.deb, hurd-kernel*.deb or openbsd-kernel*.deb can be added. Now I'm anxious to see plans for including tudos-kernel*.deb in debian.
I have added a simple rule for my incoming mail - everything from aol.com goes directly to trash. I have added it about 5 years ago, and not because I hate aol - I really don't care about aol. It's just the amount of spam I was receiving from that domain.
OTOH I have 98 gmail invites left (like everyone else on/.), so I can send them to anyone who has problems with my mailing lists. screw aol.
the previous president of Poland (two cadencies, 8 years in total - 1998-2006) lied about his education. Media went berserk about it after the first election, and yet(!) he managed to get elected for the second time.
I'd like to know what kind of hardware they used to create the demo's. From my experience the nvidia drivers aren't very stable.
I belive it's the problem with your hardware, since I had similar issues. My max. uptime was 19 days after that a total freeze of the system (or at least X lockup). After one or two months my GeForce6600 got badly damaged http://janek.kozicki.pl/z/karta.jpg, and the reseller had replaced it. But my system still was unstable, and after some investigation the power supply was replaced (possibly the power supply had damaged my graphics card). And now - current uptime is 75 days, and everything seems to be fine.
I know that the second monitor on linux will black out when playing games like doom. I don't know how to fix that.
no it doesn't, or at least not always. If the game supports windowed mode - there you go - it works. In conjunctin with sawfish it is especially nice, because I can set windowed screen size to 1600x1200, and disable sawfish's window frame. Then the game is exactly fullscreen, but occupies only one screen. That worked for Eternal Lands, and just yesterday I've finished System Shock 2 under cedega, but its max. resolution was 1024x768 so most of the time I played with second LCD turned off, because I wanted the game to occupy all 21" (smaller window was useful, when while playing I was looking at the walkthrough on the sceond screen;). I haven't tried doom, so I don't know if it's an exception. This method works for Nexuiz too, but I prefer playing it with second LCD off, since fast paced FPS requires all attention, so I don't need a second screen with/.:)
I was going to suggest berlios.de (see my sig), but then I realized that their official limit is 100 MB. But also when using their service I noted that their staff is very friendly, they provide SVN, and there are not that many projects as on sf.net. Concluding you may try berlios, just write an email in which you exactly explain your purposes, and why your project is so great, then maybe they will give you those 500 MB (and there are few projects hosted which are that big - like an.iso image download). Maybe if you give them a bigger donation, they will be even more willing to help? (there is a donation system, so that you can help berlios running).
The drawback however is that their servers suffer some downtime, like 12 hours per month. It happened to me few times that I had to wait till next day, before I could commit.
adom of course. I started playing it about 9 years ago. 3 years ago I've won for the first time. This christmas I just won for the second time. So diverse gameplay, each class/character combination is so different I never can belive it.
oh, and system shock 1, and fallout 2, and elite 2/frontier
I even bought system shock 2, but it wasn't that good.
if you read/. you have time to search for work offers (no interviews yet). Find few interesting/promising job offers (let's pick a number - like 5 or 10). When you found all of them, then the race begins. Simultaneously send 10 copies of your CV, when you get first few replies, and appointments for interview, then immediatly quit your current job. Now you have time for interviews. It will take some time (without a job) until you will attend all the intervies. Then pick the best one. And later if you don't like it - start over.
yeah I know, that's the most optimistic scenario, assuming that you can quit immediately. That depends on your contract, etc. If you can't quit immediately, then wait with sending all CVs until your nearest deadline comes close. When it passes, and your current work is finished (and you start to receive appointments for interviews), then you quit.
quite radical, but if you stay too long in that downright spiral, then, well, it will be too late.
It's not on the frontpage, but rather in linux section, so zenboomerang, did you get 250 points?
some luck for linux-interested people (whole/.) that now it's much easier to spot non-frontpage linux stories (thanks to CmdrTaco;)
nice followup will be about the results from this slashdotting. Will Autocad get to the top? I really hope so. CAD people in big companies really are tech-saavy, and really need reliable software to work with. Autocad running under windows is a misunderstanding, that currently lasts about 12 years (since they switched from dos, I still have v.12 running on dos, and v.13 running both on dos and windows). Heck, I remember working with some CAD software on on Amstrad/Shneider about 15 years ago, aww memories:)
so I'm using debian sarge, and oh well - flame about dozens of other distros, but currently I'm too lazy[1] to update to etch, or anything else. And in sarge there is firefox 1.0.4 without SVG. Anyone knows some backported debs for sarge that will provide SVG support?
[1] everything is about priorites, I spend some time reading/. but in fact I have some work to do, and this work is not switching linux distros around.
You do realize that there is an 85 page PDF of errors in the AMD64, right?
you forgot the link to that. (I shamelessly copied it from AC's post, why he posted it with score:0 is mystery to me - no one would notice it. He indicated that #113 worth looking at).
tags are displayed even without javascript. just without javascript you cannot set your own tags. Check this: http://slashdot.org/faq/tags.shtml
that's where slownewsday tag comes handy :)

Nothing for you to see here. Please move along.
oh, really?

outzone already slahdotted.
17500000 lines of code, 0.434 bugs per 1000 lines, that makes 17500*0.434=7595 bugs, so where are the bugreports?

70% appropriate.
LOL, you made my day, pal!
sorry it was 1997-2005 (new year's eve mistake)

I live in Poland, so I know for sure.

Xenocide can be built under linux and it works, but there isn't yet much tutorials how to setup the environment. We could use more Linux programmers.
I mean, wow. look at that screenshots.

of course robot pets will work, just like teddy bear works. And is much cheaper.
being /.ter means you're ugly, so you are not risking rape either. It's a win-win.

err, wait,
