I belive it's the problem with your hardware, since I had similar issues. My max. uptime was 19 days after that a total freeze of the system (or at least X lockup). After one or two months my GeForce6600 got badly damaged http://janek.kozicki.pl/z/karta.jpg, and the reseller had replaced it. But my system still was unstable, and after some investigation the power supply was replaced (possibly the power supply had damaged my graphics card). And now - current uptime is 75 days, and everything seems to be fine.

I know that the second monitor on linux will black out when playing games like doom. I don't know how to fix that.

no it doesn't, or at least not always. If the game supports windowed mode - there you go - it works. In conjunctin with sawfish it is especially nice, because I can set windowed screen size to 1600x1200, and disable sawfish's window frame. Then the game is exactly fullscreen, but occupies only one screen. That worked for Eternal Lands, and just yesterday I've finished System Shock 2 under cedega, but its max. resolution was 1024x768 so most of the time I played with second LCD turned off, because I wanted the game to occupy all 21" (smaller window was useful, when while playing I was looking at the walkthrough on the sceond screen ;). I haven't tried doom, so I don't know if it's an exception. This method works for Nexuiz too, but I prefer playing it with second LCD off, since fast paced FPS requires all attention, so I don't need a second screen with /. :)

  15. berlios ? on Alternatives to SourceForge for Larger Projects? · · Score: 1

I was going to suggest berlios.de (see my sig), but then I realized that their official limit is 100 MB. But also when using their service I noted that their staff is very friendly, they provide SVN, and there are not that many projects as on sf.net. Concluding you may try berlios, just write an email in which you exactly explain your purposes, and why your project is so great, then maybe they will give you those 500 MB (and there are few projects hosted which are that big - like an .iso image download). Maybe if you give them a bigger donation, they will be even more willing to help? (there is a donation system, so that you can help berlios running).

The drawback however is that their servers suffer some downtime, like 12 hours per month. It happened to me few times that I had to wait till next day, before I could commit.

  19. well.. search and quit. on How Do You Job-Hunt If You Work Overtime? · · Score: 1

if you read /. you have time to search for work offers (no interviews yet). Find few interesting/promising job offers (let's pick a number - like 5 or 10). When you found all of them, then the race begins. Simultaneously send 10 copies of your CV, when you get first few replies, and appointments for interview, then immediatly quit your current job. Now you have time for interviews. It will take some time (without a job) until you will attend all the intervies. Then pick the best one. And later if you don't like it - start over.

yeah I know, that's the most optimistic scenario, assuming that you can quit immediately. That depends on your contract, etc. If you can't quit immediately, then wait with sending all CVs until your nearest deadline comes close. When it passes, and your current work is finished (and you start to receive appointments for interviews), then you quit.

quite radical, but if you stay too long in that downright spiral, then, well, it will be too late.
