Check out your FY2004. When the BS of A kicked out two gay members, the federal money thing came up again. Funny thing was, the BSA was using federal funds to pay lawyers fees for their case. This was a big no-no. So DC put an end to that (in FY 2004 District of Columbia Appropriations) In H.R. 2765, you will find the following under restrictions..

BOY SCOUTS: Prohibits Federal or D.C. Funds from being used to issue, administer, or enforce the D.C. Commission on Human Rights ruling that the Boy Scouts of America must reinstate two homosexual scout leaders and pay them $50,000 each plus legal fees.

    Pretty vauge, I know.
A new bill was also introduced that would also cut fereral funding for public (read federal) schools that didn't let the BSA do assemblies and recruitment drives.

Things that 'can' make apps faster on Gentoo than other distros.

1: Better Prelinking (decreases startup time)
2: Newer libraries than any other distro (on the ~x86 branch)
    3: Processor Optimizations for compilers
4: Choice of compilers (including icc!), and slotted compiler installs

All of these optimizations could apply to other distros, but Gentoo makes it easy. It's extremely simple (compared to LSF) to have a ntpl 2.6 install with glibc 2.3.5 and GCC3.4/4/icc7/icc8. Almost any software that you could want installs with a simple command. Want the Doom3 Demo? Type, "emerge doom3demo" and it's done! You don't even have to DL the package from Id's site. It just does it.

1: Remove/add the resistors and change the BIOS.
    or

2: Used a readily available hacked driver to recognize your stock card as a FireGL

All in all, there is no market for a 128MB solid modeling card. We had 128MB video cards in 1996 (Glint based). This card would be a huge step backward for a number of engineers.

While I am sorry to hear that there is no SANE backend for your scanner, I had a couple of problems with your post. Hopefully, I can keep this constructive.

1: Linux has a single scanner driver. It is called SANE. Under windows, they have TWAIN. If your scanner lacks a SANE backend, you can.... pay someone to write one.... Try to write one yourself.... or petition/write the manufacturer to do it. Usually, there are two manufacturers of a scanner. One of them makes the chipset used, and one to brand it. Write to both of them. lease don't take this as the typical "Why don't YOU" do it answer. I'm just saying.... at least send the email or donate $50 and loan the scanner to the sane team

2: Linux is a kernel, and doesn't have many aps per say. However you can install APIs on top of linux, like GTK, QT, and WINE. The WINE api will let you run almost all of the applications that you mentioned. Most applications don't require any specific OS to run, they just need the underlying API. Exceptions would be apps that make kernel calls (cd burning, apps that use the RTC, etc...)

So, I am sorry to hear about your scanner. but your apps should run fine.

Then you develope the site. Everytime your schema changes, you have to update the passport admin site AND WAIT 24 HOURS for your changes to appear!

Once your site is done and you need a real passport key, you have to submit your site for passport compliance AND WAIT 7 DAYS! Better hope you pass, or you will have to resubmit AND WAIT ANOTHER SEVEN DAYS!

Then you have to register for a production passport key, WAIT ANOTHER 24 HOURS, dl the key, install it, and pray to god it works.

Wanna change your domain name? You can't, without going through the whole frickin process over again. Want support? Oh well, the PST team left Sammamish last year, and has been replaced with a help desk in India.

Want to use SSL on your site? Better disable it for your logon and logoff pages (at least any content you use for those pages), else it will break.

Did the person who registered and DL'd the prod key leave your company? Lose your key? Oh well, if he didn't assign you as the primary key user, your sites are now UNDEPLOYABLE, as you can't get a new key.
