The other oddity with NASA's Constellation Program (Ares I, V, etc.) is that NASA did all the design work, and the contractors are just doing build-to-spec. That seriously messes with the contractors when design flaws are encountered (as mentioned in the story). The phrase "scope change" doesn't even begin to capture the essence of it.
I just checked the front page of Slashdot, and the only two articles that didn't say who submitted them were from kdawson. Coincidentally, both were pushing products or services for Amazon.com. Perhaps we need to add a slashvertisement tag to these articles...
Of the many, many years I've been reading Slashdot, the articles almost always say who submitted the article. It appears from this article that maybe Oprah submitted it. Maybe it was kdawson. What gives?
Oh yeah? When I was a youngin' we didn't have UIDs, but we did have to chisel 1's and 0's into stone tablets and hope the recipient understood what the hell we were saying!
For the longest time I've wondered what the appropriate word is to describe Digg's front page. All the "Top x" lists drive me insane. Thanks for letting me know that the correct word for it is "pap".
I see those places as sports bars in disguise.:^) I also have no TV, so I watch the debates on C-Span online. It works fairly well and I can always turn it off when the rhetoric becomes too abundant (as was the case with the VP debate and the second presidential debate).
As a fellow Boulderite and early Slashdot registrant, I must ask, where are these sports bars in Boulder you refer to? I know Harpos and Lazy Dog are sports bars, but I don't know of any others.
We need more variety, not less. Why is it that the Miss America contest has fifty contestants but the U.S. Presidential contest only focuses on two? Clearly money and mainstream political parties are in the way of a more equitable system.
That works fine on Mac and Linux systems as well... Files are assigned an inode number, such that when you rename the file it still keeps the same inode number. That way the OS has no issues accessing the file if the name changes. The beauty of this approach is that it works even if a file is being modified/downloaded/etc.. Try that one on Windows and watch it choke quickly.
I still remember the cash register at my first job ran OS/2... I pressed the key combo to get out of a full screen POS application (can't even remember what the combo was), and realized I was in OS/2. From that point on I always wanted to bring in Doom and run it on the cash register.
So if evolution requires the occasional presence of radioactive carbon in DNA, and if carbon happens to be one of those elements affected by planet-star distance, then wouldn't the habitable zone of life be considerably smaller? In other words, if for instance carbon-13 has a faster decay rate for planets closer to their star, then evolution would be less present (less carbon-13 to alter DNA) and life may cease to exist as a result. This all assumes of course that evolution is required for life to exist in the long-term.
Never saw it. I don't have anything against THX-1138 either, but it too is generally rated far worse than the Star Wars IV-VI series. All I'm saying is that there appears to be a definite difference between Star Wars IV-VI and his other films -- enough to make one wonder how much influence he had on the former versus the latter.

Now that you mention it, watching the debates did make my mouth dry... :^)

It boots into Appleworks in ten seconds flat. 'Nuff said.
My personal opinion regarding COBOL is that it works but in a few years all of the people who know COBOL will have retired...

This sounds like a feature, not a bug.

Everyone here is talking about it. I guess that means I'm talking about it too, which means I should st%!@^(#$~NO CARRIER
My guess would be more shrieking. BTW -- the original article title used the word "Artic".
How long before the fabled Northwest Passage is a reality?
From what I read the other day, it is open now...
...are the screams of millions of spelling nazis.
Same here. For me it's not fear of mad cow as much as it is a boycott due to the USDA's faulty inspection methods.

Yes, but what makes you think they would worry about having a primary key? ;^)
...not Edwin Abbot.

What's wrong? Take four red capsules. In ten minutes, take two more. Help is on the way.
