I, for one, welcome our Numenta powered, LIDAR scanning, ORBIT-Lords. LIDAR is pretty much my favorite. It's like laser light and radar mixed... bred for its skills in magic.
Absolutely... Geneticists are doing the equivalent of machine code editing these days. What they need is some sort of equivalent to GW-BASIC or ALGOL! I'd even go out on a limb and say that maybe something like COBOL would be called for. Like they say, a computer without COBOL and Fortran is like a piece of chocolate cake without ketchup and mustard.
We all know that Japan can't buy F-22s because those aircraft aren't able to cross the international date line properly... That raises the important question: was this a bug, or a feature?:^)
What's so great about Ron Paul? He has never voted to raise taxes. He has never voted for an unbalanced budget. He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership. He has never voted to raise congressional pay. He has never taken a government-paid junket. He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act. He voted against regulating the Internet. He voted against the Iraq war.
He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program. He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.
Wow, how many others of the three digit crowd are still around? Quite a few I would guess. No more than 999, anyway.:^) We should form a group at Meetup.com.
I totally agree. If you can't find a job here, make a job for yourself and a few others. That is what we need in the U.S. -- more productive jobs that produce goods that are marketable locally and to other nations. That, combined with increasing the national savings rate, are about the only things that are going to save this nation against the huge trade imbalances and federal budget deficits we have.
I agree. I'm an INTP and a libertarian, and I believe seeking truth is one of the most important tenets anyone can have. Personally, I find the traditional Democratic and Republican parties to be contradictory and therefore not truthful; the Republicans claim to be against killing in terms of abortion but for killing in terms of war. The Democrats talk about strong economies but they support unions which in many cases bankrupt companies. Republicans promote financial liberty but social authoritarianism; the Democrats promote social liberty but financial authoritarianism. Ultimately none of the authoritarian options make sense to me, as Republicans want to enforce upon me what the "truth" is socially, and Democrats want to enforce upon me what the "truth" is financially. Libertarianism makes a lot more sense in that it promotes liberty for both financial and social choices. It leaves the discovery of truth up to the individual, where it belongs.
This "smear" is a matter of pointing to documented and uncontested history. It has certainly been contested, by Ron Paul himself in the Texas Monthly magazine in 2001. Ron Paul said those were not his words, and were those of a ghostwriter. I am curious -- which presidential candidate do you support? Is there someone with a more consistent voting history, more unwavering support of the Constitution, and more principled statesmanship than Ron Paul? If so, I would like to hear about this person, as I would be willing to change my signature below to accommodate such a candidate.
"Racism is simply an ugly form of collectivism, the mindset that views humans strictly as members of groups rather than individuals. Racists believe that all individuals who share superficial physical characteristics are alike: as collectivists, racists think only in terms of groups. By encouraging Americans to adopt a group mentality, the advocates of so-called "diversity" actually perpetuate racism. Their obsession with racial group identity is inherently racist.
The true antidote to racism is liberty. Liberty means having a limited, constitutional government devoted to the protection of individual rights rather than group claims. Liberty means free-market capitalism, which rewards individual achievement and competence, not skin color, gender, or ethnicity."

I saw the mises.org link in your post, and wanted to mention that Ron Paul endorses von Mises and the Austrian school and has even written a small book on the subject.
[Fiat currency] allows the government the ability to pay for anything it likes which leads to the inevitable increases in power of the political elite, the banks and the largest multinational corporations which service government interests. Which is exactly why all of us should vote for Ron Paul in the primaries and general election next year. He is an advocate for returning U.S. currency to the gold standard. He has written and given countless speeches about gold and our monetary policy. He even predicted the dot-com bubble three years before it happened (see the 4th paragraph in this article). If there is one candidate who can help stop the runaway borrowing and spending in Washington, this guy is it.
Right on. If there is one man who could single-handedly change Washington with veto power, it would be Ron Paul. See this video for example. My only fear is that Congress would begin to abuse the 2/3 majority vote to overrule him. So are you part of a meetup group? I'm co-organizer for the Jacksonville, FL group. We have almost 120 folks in our group, and we're doubling in size every month! Exciting times...
I checked apple.com and haven't seen any updates yet. I think this is the first time in years where a product announcement has been made and their website wasn't updated at the same exact moment.:^)
Maybe Slashdot should have a new political section slogan: "Politics for nerds. Your vote doesn't matter."
On the other hand, with a screwup like this, maybe Ron Paul will get the majority of votes on election day. Or maybe a write-in candidate like Mickey Mouse will get all the votes.:^) I guess that's where the electoral college comes in. Do they use Diebold machines as well?!
It isn't necessary to tie a currency 100% to gold; it could be tied to multiple metals, or have a fractional tie (such as the Swiss franc prior to 2000). That would reduce or eliminate a lot of the price volatility that you mention, and would still encourage governments to balance their budgets and control debts. As it stands now with a floating currency, it is too ripe for abuse. See this article for some more history behind the gold standard.
He is only for FairTax as a temporary means of income tax, until he would reduce government spending to where the IRS was no longer necessary. He is certainly concerned for the poor and middle class of this nation -- read his speech here on how our monetary policy taxes them excessively, and what he proposes to do about it. It has to do with returning the currency to a gold standard. By doing so, the government can't print money to cover its debts, and would be forced to spend wisely, resulting in smaller government, less taxes, and less inflation. Also see these videos (part 1, part 2) where he discussed monetary policy last week with Fed Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke. Ron Paul knows his stuff and would be a tremendous asset for all of us to have in the White House.
Bingo. Our minds are somewhat lossy, and perhaps that is one reason why we are able to remember so much information. We often disregard or forget dissenting and/or contradictory information to reaffirm our memory. Creating lossless AI almost sounds like an oxymoron from that perspective...
Ron Paul is really a libertarian who is running as a republican so that he can get into the bipartisan-only debates... He is currently a 10th term House Representative for the 14th district of Texas, and he is a strict Constitutionalist. If he sees a bill that isn't supported by the Constitution, he will vote against it. He has strong convictions to greatly reduce the size of our federal government. Read more about him on Wikipedia or his own campaign website for more info. Also check out YouTube for some videos. He's probably the most honest and least corrupt person running for President that we will see in our lifetime.

In other news, the NSA is partnering with NIST and University of Maryland to form the Joint Quantum Institute.
I'll have to tell my GF... She still uses my old Powerbook G4 550, and only recently has she said it's getting too slow. :^)
Wait, wait, wait. Are these birds African or European?

Now I know where all those spam emails get their text from!
Dr. Ron Paul's stance of racism is clear:

Correction: Ron Paul's prediction of the dot com bubble bursting was under the the 4th paragraph under the "7/22/97" section.
