  1. You're right, which is why I don't. That doesn't change the fact that Apple overcharges.

We all love Hawking, but it seems like every time he steps up to talk about something these days it's topics which are WELL outside of his expertise.

  7. That's artificial scarcity, not apple going full tilt. The oldest move in the Apple playbook is to under-produce in order to stoke the idea of exclusivity. They do this with every single release. Say what you want about the i-products, but their marketing team is genius.

  8. There's a difference in what is considered "reasonable" when talking about $1.50 vs $800+. Most people don't consider $1.50 unreasonable, even if the coffee only costs $0.01 to make. Sure it is technically gouging, but it's also very easy to make your own coffee if that's unacceptable to you. Try making your own smartphone.

  9. It's estimated that the iPhone 6+ costs about $236 US to make. They've been gouging customers for years.

  10. Since they charge more than quadruple what it costs to make it this shouldn't be a problem.

What motivates me is personal experience which seems very different from yours. Before you ask, I don't work for Microsoft. I'm not paid to try to convince you that Windows is some kind of panacea - and in fact that's not even what I'm trying to say. It's what you desperately want to believe I'm trying to say so that nothing threatens your point of view. Of course, how you're acting is exactly how I expect zealots respond to a rational argument.

  13. My BMW M3 does much the same thing with automatic mode in it's SMG gearbox which is basically a manual double clutch transmission with the option of allowing a computer to shift for you. It will change and adapt over time the more you drive it. Gearheads have known about this for over a decade now.

Whatever they're paying these people to inspect these cars, they're paying them too much if they don't know about stuff like this.

That's not true, there most definitely is one. Any time anyone even whispers "windows" the zealots jump out of the woodwork to spout complete nonsense that hasn't been true for over a decade. I doubt most of these people have even used windows during that time.

I mean, think about it. You have a negative experience with Windows at some point so you swear off it and make the transition. Now you use Linux and your world is perfect - or at least as perfect as it can be in your situation. A decade passes and things change, but your attitude remains the same because Linux has served you well enough in the past. This is what I feel is happening - many people think windows is just like it was a decade ago and that nothing has really changed. Of course, you sometimes get the same attitudes about Linux as well. If you spend no time understanding the platform as it evolves, you'll just wind up talking nonsense when you try to discuss it.

  15. When you say "premium" what does that mean to you? To me it means I'm getting at or near the most performance possible in that form factor. To you potentially it means something else. However I struggle to find a definition of "premium" that adequately describes the laptops that Apple sells.

  16. That would be pretty awesome, but the bottom line is that performance hardware generates heat - and the heat has to go somewhere. Come up with a way to do this without active fans that won't cook the shit out of someone's lap and you'll have an idea worth real money.

Except if you can't run it with modern hardware because it'll overheat it's not a good design at all. Certainly not deserving of the premium label Apple ascribes to their highest end hardware. This might be different if there weren't tons of laptops already running nvidia's 10 series chipsets, but once again Apple proves that they'd rather sell you old hardware at inflated prices using sub-par designs.

Except millions run Windows and don't experience the doomsday scenarios you push as commonplace. Linux zealots are so threatened by Windows they'll say anything to demonize it at this point. There are plenty of things one could be critical of where Windows is concerned, but stability? That hasn't been a serious problem for a long time now.
