I'm not very happy with a lot of things Apple is doing these days, but it's nice to see that they took this seriously, and moved to make things right with the lady in question.
I need to pay closer attention to what I'm clicking on. Gizmodo is a garbage site with trashy editors who don't do research, steal from people and companies, and go out of their way to wreck careers and lives. I don't want to support them, and I'd hope you wouldn't either.
The problem here is once you know something can be done, you need to know the best ways to avoid doing it. Each language has its own pitfalls, and identifying the bad code and how to deal with it is the really important part of this exercise. Basically, knowing there is a problem, and knowing how to fix the problem are different things.
I'm not trying to say what Google has done is a bad thing - I just think it would have made more sense to cover popular languages. This would have a greater benefit to the world.
If you're going to teach vulnerabilities and possibly how to exploit them, it's stupid to use a tool that very few people (comparatively speaking) use. The idea here is to show people the problems and give them a means to see the problems in action. Of course, most people will have to learn a new language in order for this to be useful which diminishes the effort.
If you want a good paper to reach as many people as possible, it's probably a better idea not to mention Joel Spolsky in the article at all. The camp is so split where he is concerned that you may lose half your readers at the very mention of his name.
While I'd typically be supporting of people who are opposed to this sort of police action, Chen is a douchenozzle, and definitely deserved to get put in his place on this occasion.
apple has been getting run through the alternative press lately for sweatshops
If by "alternative press" you mean places like slashdot, digg, reddit, etc, I haven't seen anything for a very long time now. At least a year. No followup stories, no answer to the question of whether or not anything changed. Slashdot likes to focus on Microsoft because it's Slashdot, and everyone knows the rules. Love Apple, hate Microsoft.
Actually it's because young people find the Linux community distasteful, and far too difficult to break in to with all the attitudes. The Linux community can be downright hostile to the uninitiated.
They used to have lots of different articles on a lot of different topics. Now they'll write 50 articles on a single device. Anyone who saw gizmodo on the ipad's launch day can attest to this. It's one giant fanboy fapping contest.
OK, I'll agree with you, but first, lets expand the scope a little.
Please stop eating all those fat greasy burgers - obesity is a far larger problem which poses more risks than smoking.
Please ban alcohol - it's just as bad as smoking.
Please ban cars - people don't exercise because they drive everywhere.
Please ban bottled water - about a zillion of these plastic bottles go in to a landfill somewhere every month
Please ban using oil - it's not an infinite resource and to wrecks the atmosphere
The fact is that you dipshits are so hypocritical you fail to recognize the more serious problems out there, while in comparison, smoking is relatively minor.
Please type harder. That doesn't change the fact that they blew up a bunch of civilians who were not up to anything malicious.
Assuming they were armed, and going to attack a convoy, why was it that NOT ONE OF THEM got a shot off at the chopper? COMMON FUCKING SENSE would seem to dictate that they would probably SHOOT BACK.
People like you are such morons that even when the truth is on fucking film, right in front of you, you'll try to find ways to not believe it.

Ubuntu is all well and good until you need something that is not covered by its package manager. It's all well and good until some piece of hardware only has limited support via some hack.
The problem with Linux is that even with all the advancements, it's still a fragmented platform that only works properly if you stay within it's narrow selection of hardware that is known to work.
The word "indiscriminate" in the first line, and "unprovoked" in the second last sentence. Both of those express an opinion as to the *motive* of the attack. That is opinion, it is biased against the soldiers who clearly (listen to the audio) go through the correct chain of command and rules of engagement before opening fire.
That would probably be because nobody on the ground was doing anything hostile. The pilot sure as fuck didn't discriminate - they shot everyone they could without so much as a warning. If you think the attack *was* somehow provoked, you must really be seeing something completely different in that video than what I saw. If you actually support this action, you're as terrible a human being as the guys in the helicopter who basically murdered a bunch of people without so much as a single shot fired at them.

The fact remains they were wrong. They didn't even try to be sure, they just started shooting and laughed about it.
Screw you for trying to protect trailer park trash like this which shouldn't even be allowed access to weapons of any kind, never mind heavily armed assault choppers.
Not at all. I'm saying that some opensource projects are bad, but people will use those in place of superior products just because it happens to be opensource. I'm rather surprised you even had to ask the question. It should always be about what gets the job done, and what meets your requirements. If your only requirement is that it be opensource, then I would question your requirements.
I'm seriously starting to have a problem with the slashdot mentality that you must think in a single camp, the popular user's camp, or be moderated out of existence. The whole point to forums like this is discussion. Debate is healthy for discussion.
They don't do anything when the abuse is physical and real either. There is this prevailing notion that bullying is "normal" and just "kids being kids". I can tell you though, some of those bullies are so vicious it's no wonder some of the victims see suicide as the only viable option.
It's time to start locking some of these little shits up. They can either reform, or GTFO.

Just deleted my account. Screw facebook.

I bought Civ 2, it guaranteed I'd never buy another civ game again. They're clunky games that have a good premise but are executed horribly.

...which is silly, considering it's far from the most popular language for writing web applications.

Calling it the Ikaros is sort of like calling a new ship you build "The Titanic". It doesn't do a lot to inspire confidence.
Here's to hoping to works for them though, it's definitely ambitious and way cool.

YES! It's not about the numbers, it's about the process.
*I'm very glad Linus re-introduced this word to the mainstream of popular culture. It's a term of singular contempt, and I should know, I'm Irish.
I don't think Linus is really recognized by popular culture. The majority of people who observe popular culture don't even know who he is.
Since you like quotes, here's another:
A poor workman blames his tools.
...some people who use opensource just because it's opensource are OK with cutting off their nose to spite their face.
