  1. Hmmm. Shouldn't take long. on Yet Another Degrading DVD · · Score: 1

    All solutions targeted at reverse engineering the DVD-D to make it playable on a permanent basis are extremely costly and complex, if they can ever succeed;

    Sounds like famous last words to me...

    Anyway, the reparation cost would be much higher than the cost of a permanent DVD, and this would never justify the involvement of anybody in such an operation

    Since when has that ever stopped a true geek?

    The tech stuff also says that "some key data" is destroyed, not the entire disc; and that if the eight hours is up while you're watching it, the movie will still finish.

    Here's my prediction - if they release it, there'll be a workaround available somehow, perhaps via a hacked DVD-ROM firmware?

    I'm guessing you're not using sendmail because of your use of the phrase "transport map". Sendmail (and maybe other mailers) has a useful FallbackMX variable that allows you to add an MX host onto the end of each lookup.

    I've added my ISP mail relay as the fallback MX host. Now any domains that won't accept mail direct from my DSL-hosted server end up going through the ISP relay. Works perfectly.

    You should be able to make copies of a CD that you bought. It is not right, however, to make 25 copies for friends. However, slippery a slope as it is, I think it is probably okay to make a copy for a friend or two. But, it's a slippery slope and many would take issue with me.

    Count me among the many. Whilst I agree entirely with your first two points, making any copies for friends is copyright infringement (I still think it's theft, but I get beaten with metaphorical sticks if I try that line!).

    What right do you have to make a copy for your friend? True, you own that CD, and I agree that you should be able to make a copy for your car or rip it to your HDD jukebox, just so long as it remains single use only (ie. don't rip it then give the CD to a friend!).

    Would you also think it's right to scan and reprint a magazine or book for a friend?

    Not really. If you're looking for a decent A4 print, you need at least 5MP. A raw image from this beast contains 100 of those images, so you could use "digital zoom" (actually, just cropping) to concentrate on specific parts of the image at perfectly acceptable resolution.

    You're right about the general uselessness of digital zoom on low-end digicams, but this is a different beast.
