I think the news here is that Cisco actually said something smart.
The first thing that popped into my head is security. That alone is reason enough. Never mind the bandwidth and interference issues. I think interference issues would also increase with the prevalence of wireless as well.
Its one thing to have a bridge or piece of orbiting space crap named after you... this not such a good idea.
I know the swine flu seems to be overblown and sensationalized by the media etc.. right now, but who knows perhaps it mutates and kills off half the population by some trick of fate.
Now you have the worst thing in the world named after you. On top of that I imagine that due to the catastrophic implications, history could become somewhat jumbled in the years following.
Now you go down in history as the cause of the worst thing in the world with connotations as to your parentage and hygiene, and you name becomes worse than Hitler's!
The 1st phase of my evil psychological experiments are complete!
Little do those fools know the expirement wasn't about birds dancing, but rather in getting someone to watch youTube for 8 hours a day for a month straight.
The next phase I will take them to a "magical" island and tell them to hit a button every 108 minutes or the world will end and see if they do that shit...
Soooo that means EVERY MONTH pretty much every man, woman, child, grandmother, frickin' everyone pirated one song. Every Month. That's a lot of songs. You figure at that rate you would quickly reach some kind of music saturation point where every person in the entire country owns every song ever made...
Anyway it is ridiculous. It is stupid. Just like the lies and propaganda that is spread by the US music copyright lobby today. It has no basis in fact, and is so wrong that all it really is, is a thinly veiled excuse by industry to try and give politicians a legitimate excuse for doing what they are being paid by them to do.
Unfortunately the only political party that seems to get this in respect to this issue is the NDP (New Democratic Party, who really should change their name as they aren't exactly new anymore) party, and they haven't a hope of being in power unfortunately. They are constantly at the losing end of both Conservative and Liberal fear tactics against one another...
Too funny. I love how even the NYT is making fun of the lobby, or was this supposed to be serious?
It looks like they are using the same stats and logic from 1897 today, none of which is likely correct or makes a lick of sense.
The first thing that popped out at me was the 5 million songs a month figure. I can't be bothered to look it up, but considering what the entire population was in Canada in 1897, I would have to say that it looks like every single ancestor we have up here is a pirate... Yarrr!
I am sure there are many more knowledgeable folks on here that will same the same. I call BS.
Unless there has been some remarkable new discovery in technology in Video Cards, AND the video game industry has shifted alarmingly, this is simply not the case.
For those that don't know:
0$ aka Integrated video - Runs Word just fine. 100$ aka Value video - Runs old games just fine. 200-300$ aka Mid-range Video - Most bang for buck. 500$ aka High-End - Bleeding edge. 1000$ aka SLI aka Stupid Loser Idiots.
Nothing has changed really. "Fine" is a relative word. Fine for you may not be fine for me. There are also a lot more "casual" gamers out there. If anything has changed, that may be it. This group of people may not care so much about video, and thus be fine with whatever. Guitar Hero and WOW do not really tax a modern video card all that much.
Being able to run a game at low levels may be fine for some. However some may want most the eye candy on and need flawless FPS with no dips for multiplayer.
Along with more casual players, the age of gamers is increasing, which means two things. 1) They may be a little less hardcore than they used to be and, 2) They likely have more money to spend (but very well may have other things to spend it on like, kids, houses, retirement, etc...). I am not sure if that is a net win or loss one way or another...
Disclaimer my last video card I bought was a 1950Pro for 200$, and I have been happy with it.
The only technical thing I can see that will make a difference in the near future is when development is done to optimize for parallel programing to take advantage of multiple cores, optimization for 64 bit architecture, and efficient swapping and/or integration between GPU and CPU.
Problem is, none of that shit is going to happen until windows goes 64bit mainstream and it somehow becomes easier to program in parallel.
I think it is crazy that these "new" technologies have been out for awhile now, and are pretty much sitting in peoples boxes mostly unused (other than perhaps for some multitasking).
Seriously Cogeco Cable (Rogers Communication) just started doing this.
They were kind enough to send out a notification of buggery this time. They didn't do that when they implemented caps, only posted to an obscure website.
However note that the going rate for bandwidth is about 6 times market value. Teksavvy on their limited account has a cap of 200mb, and 0.25$ above that, and you can also pre-buy 100GB for 10$ if you like so 0.10 a GB. Cogeco is currently charging 1.25$ per GB.
Also note the only way to check your bandwidth is to log on your Cogeco account, which most people probably do not use or have set up. However to their credit, it used to be a separate even more obscure website before that, and before that you had to call tech support and wait an hour for a person to actually tell you. So they are getting better... sort of. They are only kinda evil in a non-competitive incompetent sort of way. Well sort of reverse competitive with Bell anyway to keep prices high and services low anyway. I hear Bell is set to implement the same policy soon. Same GB prices as well, go figure.
Like Bell they are always quiet about the whole shaping/throttling issue, through granted most users wouldn't know the difference anyway.
The key is announcements I think would be typically the realm of the PR guy, and we all know how knowledgeable they are, usually at the behest of Management, which we all know are not greedy at all and never motivated by other things like stock values.
Another thing that is horrible are those that do scientific papers that very loosely report something or propose something not yet proven by any rigor. Enter the media and some journalist reporting on something they know nothing about and we also know that everything is reported with precision and never just to grab readers or headlines...
can you tell I am a bit bitter and cynical towards this stuff... Oh well it makes the few grains of truth that slip through all the more sweeter when discovered I suppose.
I usually take flack when I respond this way to this tripe that gets posted on slashdot all the time.
I mean if it isn't SSD or nano-photoelectric paint or whatever else... There is always some bleeding edge development that was just released that is going to revolutionize how I do everything etc...
I mean really, most the stories never go anywhere, and are just reported as new developments, over and over again.
Wake me up when someone is actually developing something physical that is at least remotely practical.
I don't mean to be debbie downer but when you see enough of these "announcements", the phrase never cry wolf comes to mind.
Also this goes for manufactures announcements. Company X plans to develop a harddrive that will store 1000 petabytes, on the head of a pin, that runs off of fairy dust, by 2012.
Good for them.
I plan on doing a lot of things myself. However simply saying it doesn't actually make it so.
You may want to talk to your retarded little brother USA, and see how that worked out for them.
Gov'ner: Here's 250$ million, Broadband for all, yea! Telcos: Yea! Pleabs: Yea! Gov'ner: Where is our Broadband? Telcos: What broadband? Gov'ner: Where is our money? Telcos: What money? Gov'ner: *shrugs* Pleabs::(
I don't do that shit. If someone wants me to work like that they can very well call me and talk to me. E-mail is too easy.
I have realized that work doesn't go away, there is always more, if I worked after hours that is all I would do. It will still be there tomorrow when I come in to work.
I have also realized that 99.9% of the time when there is an emergency, and is needed yesterday, etc... it means that someone didn't plan, or didn't do their own work. It is not my job to bail them out for doing a crappy job.
Sometimes shit does happen that requires immediate attention (that 0.01%) that is pretty much out of anyone's control. In cases like this, I do not mind getting contacted.
Anyway that's my 2 cents. Obviously I am not a surgeon!:)
Can't you just make it a good movie? It was such a great book. Do we really have to bother with this 3D crap.
The last 3D movie I saw was at Disney World with Micheal Jackson, when I was a kid about 20 years ago. I really don't need to see another.
Besides I already tried downloading Journey to the Center of the Earth http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373051/ and I have to tell you that didn't turn out so great.
Even if you discount his contribution to science, which is considerable he is pretty amazing.
As someone who has ALS, aka Lou Gehrig's Disease, aka motor neuron disease, run in the family (Gradfather died from it) and has read up on it a lot, it is remarkable that he is even alive, let alone a scientist of some repute.
By the time most are diagnosed they only live for a handful of years.
Anyway I hope he recovers from this and continues to lead such a productive life. Best wishes.
Currently I live in Ontario, and my family in Nova Scotia... Taking the current Train, it would take about 24 hours travel time. I am not sure what that speed it, but I would say less than 100mph.
If I was offered a way to do it in a 1/3 of that time I would probably try it. The devil is in the details.
Sure I can take a flight, and it only takes 2-3 hours (depending on direction), however that is not the total time. I have to drive to the airport, which is 2 hours, I am supposed to be there 2 hours before the flight, and the flight takes 2 hours, and I usually give my self 30min to park, get lost, etc.. so already it is about 7 hours, and that is if nothing is delayed which we know never happens...
I remember one instance where my flight got canceled and I was stuck in the airport for 32hours... I remember telling the airline jerk that I could have gotten into my car, Driven across Canada, said hi to my mom, driven back and gotten in this argument with them in the time I was there.
Oh I made this argument when they put a 60GB cap where there was none before.
From what they told me (and IANAL), it is not "written notification", only notification, and thus posting a NEW EULA on their web site is totally acceptable. That is how they made the cap changes anyway. They just pointed me to their web site and said "see!".
Understandably I was very pissed, and as you said almost terminated my contract then and there, financial compensation or no. However upon doing a bit a research it really doesn't matter what I do. Basically Bell and Rogers mirror each other's policies, so if I dump one for the other it is no better. The only alternative is to go with a independent. 99% of those are DSL based and lease Bell phone lines. I do not have a home phone. Anyway if Rogers screws me again (aka I get a Bill for usage over 60Gb at 1.50$ per) I have told myself I will be trying out Teksavvy Dry DSL and seeing if the Latency differences really matter for me.
Is the note I found when I went to check my bandwidth with Cogeco (Rogers Communication), Bell's *supposed* competition.
I got no notification other than it is posted in some obscure web site no one checks that they just created. Nice how they just change their agreement with your contract whenever they damn well fell like it.
No idea if this is implemented yet, but obviously it is on its way if not already here.
Notice it is also 6 TIMES the 0.25 cents per GB that Teksavvy charges. That seems reasonable doesn't it?
Telecommunications is horrible in Canada, and the reason is the CRTC will do nothing against either Bell or Rogers.
Open it up, or nationalize it and be done with it. What we have now is not working.
Its not a monopoly as the article suggests, but rather a duopoly. Rogers is just as bad. Its sort of like peoples complains about oil companies and price fixing. Bell and Rogers are *supposed* to be in competition with each other, but really both are happy with the way things are and they pretty much just mirror each other as far as it goes.
Case in point, Rogers recently changed the way I look at my bandwidth usage a week or so ago. They made a new web page under your user account... Guess what I noticed when I checked it?
Your monthly usage limit is: 60 GB (61,440 MB) Additional usage costs:$ 1.50 per GB (1 GB = 1024 MB)
You have to love their EULA that basically states, "we can change this whenever the hell we damn feel like it. Too frickin' bad!"
A) When I first got my account there was no limit. B) Currently or maybe I should say previously if you exceeded your limit you were given a warning and then disconnected. C) Now or in the future it looks like they plan to charge you 1.50$ per GB extra. Isn't that nice. Also note that it is 6 TIMES the price of what Teksavvy is charging now for the same service.
Complete bullshit. This is how I find out also, on some obscure web page that no one really checks, which they just created. So underhanded.
I HATE telecommunications in Canada. The CRTC really needs to grow some balls for a change.
Hmmmm Perhaps an entire network of these to control multiple ship over the oceans.... Of course with that kind of complexity you would need some sort of AI interface.
I think the news here is that Cisco actually said something smart.

Population of Canada in 1897 was approximately 5,122,000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_population_of_Canada_by_years#1890s
Number of Songs Per Month Pirated = 5,000,000
Soooo that means EVERY MONTH pretty much every man, woman, child, grandmother, frickin' everyone pirated one song. Every Month. That's a lot of songs. Also this is perfect topic for one of my favorite quote/lines... no idea where it comes from...
"If you believe everything you read, perhaps reading isn't for you."
Basically meaning to think critically about things, and not to accept anything just at face value.
The key is announcements I think would be typically the realm of the PR guy, and we all know how knowledgeable they are, usually at the behest of Management, which we all know are not greedy at all and never motivated by other things like stock values.

I have just created the highest speed network.
It consists of:
1 Boeing 747 Large Cargo Freighter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_747_Large_Cargo_Freighter
5,411,764 Blu-ray Disc (100 pc - 7.5" x 12.5" x 22") http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc
That is:
270,588,200GB traveling at about 900km/h
My math isn't good enough (or I am lazy) to figure out what that is GB/s, but I bet it is pretty darn fast. Seek time may be a bitch though.
I usually take flack when I respond this way to this tripe that gets posted on slashdot all the time.
