Don't know what issues your talking about in Australia. Our current government motto when it comes to U.S. intellectual property law (in fact any law that a US entity wishes to impose on Australian citizens) is "We swallow"
What I don't understand is why the hell youtube is talking to a record company in the first place. Why aren't they dealing with a Copyright collection society? (I don't know the name of the US one). They are an orginisation attempting to make money with content including copyrighted material, which the copyright holders are legally entitled to recompense. But their business model is more like the modern day equivalent of a tv station, so they should be paying in a similar way to how tv stations pay for their use of copyrighted material.
Seems to me the issue here is not about delaying the release of songs on itunes increasing cd sales but not releasing songs as singles increasing album sales. The fact that the song wasn't released on itunes etc was only due to the record company wanting to bundle the song with the rest of the album, because surprise, surprise they make more money.
It looks to me like the record companies took a page from Microsoft's book.
I know this is late in the conversation but i made the switch 2 days ago and the only problems i've had adjusting is the lack of right click (which I've just found out as mentioned way above is ctr-click) and loading Open Office took a while. I'm very happy I've switched.
Yes you are correct. APRA (Australian Performing Right Association) issues licenses to play music in public for your business. This includes shops and waiting rooms. Also the licence needs to be obtained to play the radio and/or to have a television on (even though the radio and television stations also pay for their own licences). The cost of these licences varies dependant on how the music is used, from memory the basic waiting room type licence is about $65AUD p.a. They have a whole section that is dedicated to hunting down those businesses that do not comply.
For finally finding a shark to jump.
