The state has no stake in brainwashing children. If you think so, you probably also believe in UFOs and that the US gov was behind 9/11.

Perhaps it has mild stake in keeping them ignorant, but you can augment their education as much as you like while simultaneously allowing them to attend a regular school.

It's a little different in the vis-versa situation. The parent has personal prejudices and a personal agenda, which can be good for traditional 'learning', but also very bad for the growth of independent ideas.

In fact, I'd argue that being exposed to conflicting viewpoints, socialization, and independent thought is much, much more important than being book smart. The latter makes you ace tests; the former makes you ace life.

And everyone else is going to be affected by your retarded parenting decisions down the road, because we're all part of a society and you can't escape that. Well, unless you live in the mountains away from all other humans. If you do that, well, I don't care what you do.

Frankly, I'm disgusted that the lawyers involved were not reprimanded for wasting the courts time.

As I see it, the biggest problem with DMCA takedowns is that they don't involve the courts.

Maybe there needs to be a special, low-cost, streamlined (over the 'net) "copyright court system". No reason to get this tangled up into meat-space and clog real court duties, but it seems like there's a need for a non-prejudiced arbiter system to clear up disputes quickly and efficiently.

In this media age, waiting a month or two before a court date could be devastating to the copyright holder. And it's way too costly for innocent parties who are unjustly accused.

Not that this is a completely accurate comparison, but the ESRB does a better job at accountability and ratings than the government would.

When that hot coffee mod came out for GTA:SA, the ESRB took immediate action against the publisher and changed its policies toward 'hidden' content and 'modability' in games.

But the only reason the ESRB is such a success is because of the government's constant threat to take over video game censorship, which nobody wants.

I really do think we're in a different era, with modern communication at our fingertips and a mass media willing to completely destroy a food company over one food poisoning outbreak, not to mention class-action lawsuits are so prevalent. But net neutrality and a competitive mass media is an essential piece to all of this.
