  3. Greed on 419 Emails From A Cultural Perspective · · Score: 4, Insightful

I would have to agree that the anonymous American is a greedy fool.

Where else do you see people react to being in an accident like they won the lottery? Be it medical, car, workplace. Get hurt and bingo, how can I get paid.

Tough to admit, but deep down everyone has some greed. Greed is a survival trait. Greed doesn't apply only to money, but to status, acceptance, and a miriad other indicators be them material or immaterial.

Most scams rely heavily on the scamee forgoing rational thought to bite the lure. Nothing clouds judgement like a big payday or a supermodel.

American's are in for a rough ride when China becomes the next superpower and greed is a major reason why.

  5. Realism not that important for me. on The Future of Videogame Aesthetics · · Score: 1

May not be the same for everyone, but both TV/movies and gaming for me are waaay more about the story line. When I really get into a movie or TV show, I find that I'm a great deal more immersed in the alternate reality that is created by the story. Sound aside, I've watched great movies on a crappy 13" BW tv and still come out loving what I just saw. Movie theaters are the same way, except you all lucky enough to have digital projection. The quality of movie projection is horrible, but if you get into a great story and are transported into it's reality your imagination will enhance and fill in the details.

Games to me are the same way. I have never found myself in the middle of a good game distracted because a tree wasn't rendered at photo quality. If the game story and play is well designed, visual realism means very little to me. My imagination can fill in the details.

A vaild point though is when you take the game out of context. A screen capture of a game for marketing or whatever is always viewed out of context. None of the immersion described above is possible and so the quality of the image becomes much more important.

IMO, I'd much rather have fantastic story and expansive worlds to play in than all this super high quality photo realistc eyecandy. But then again the ability to create great stories is much more difficult than to brute force out super high quality images.

  7. It's not hard, but here's what I learned on Advice for Returning to School After Long Break? · · Score: 1

I went back as a grad student 7 years after getting my degree. My situation is a bit different than yours as I went back to take 36 hours of undergrad pre-requisits for medical school. I was able to keep my job while taking these courses and I'll find out next month if I got in. But none the less here's what I found.

    1) You are going to be waaaay more organized and mature for your classes now that you've had to report to a boss for at least 5 years.

    2) You'll (probably) not have to deal with any of the stupid social crap that you have to deal with as a first time college student. i.e. parties, living alone, bf/gf, etc.

    3) One thing I found terribly annoying was the difference between academic culture and corporate culture. It's hard to put a finger on it, but academics in general seem to have no concept of the real world. They move slowly, without any sense of urgency nor real emotion about the students they teach. This really frustrated me to no end.

The real question I have for the OP, is what will a masters degree really do for you? I can virtually guarantee you that you learned more in the 5 years of real world experience than you're going to learn in any classroom. In my experiecne with hiring people I put alot more weight in what they have actually done in a corporate environment rather than what they picked up in a classroom.
