Needless to say, I blocked everything again.

I never bought one because of the monthly fee. I would buy one immediately if there was no monthly fee. I assume there is still a monthly fee, correct?

There is absolutely no reason to have a monthly fee on this piece of hardware. I understand there is a minor "service" they provide in getting schedules and being able to set up recording through an internet page, but in no way does that constitute the size of the monthly fee I remember seeing.

Also, I believe the device stopped working after you stopped paying the monthly fee. What? Why can't it work like an old-school VCR at that point where you have to manually program when it should record?

Please correct me if my history is off, or things have changed. I'd take a serious look at a TiVo if things are now different.

And I've compared the search results, 80% of the time I prefer Google's results (there was this site that compared Bing/Google/Yahoo and had you pick your favorite and then told you what it was, don't know the URL at the time)

I've always wanted to do this objectively, so I found the following site. Not sure if this is the one you mentioned, but it worked great.
    http://blindsearch.fejus.com/

I found that site by searching for "bing google yahoo search compare" on google. Doing that using our search compare, I chose the correct search site for the answer I was looking for (though it was one link deeper than direct)...

Then, couldn't resist a Meta compare...Which site is better at telling me which site is better...
    http://blindsearch.fejus.com/?q=which+is+better%2C+google%2C+yahoo+or+bing+search&type=web

My results are similar to yours. I favor Google about 70-80% of the time.

Instead, we provided an incentive for people to move out into the country, leading to sprawl, demand for more roads, foreign dependence on oil, etc... From a pure efficiency point-of-view, living in the city is much more efficient than living in the country. So providing all these services to the country leads to a very inefficient system.

Life isn't about being the most efficient in everything. Actually, there's a perfect solution to the efficiency problem of a life.

I think RMS may be more interested in openness than trust. If you have openness, you don't need trust because everything is visible.

In your example of someone building your house, you don't really need trust if the blue prints are viewable by you, and you can inspect the house as it is being built. You can look inside the walls before the drywall is up. And actually, you could say that building a house is not a trusted thing since many many 3rd party inspections are always done before the house is "released".

I find it interesting that anyone blindly trusts anymore, especially slashdoters. I know I absolutely minimize the things I blindly trust in my life.
